as far as I'm aware vampires originated in medieval times when corpses were found with their mouths hanging open and various people dying near by them, often involving blood disease. a brick was shoved in the corpses mouth to keep it from biting and killing villagers in the night. the actual cause of the villagers death was lack of sanitation and terrible medical practices causing disease, especially of the blood (because they would drain and open blood vessels all the time back then thinking it was healing). Also leaving dead bodies around wasn't very good.
