Jay Kyburz makes ludicrously compelling browser strategy games, and he’s just beta-testing another one now. It’s called Jupiter’s Folly. I had a chat with him about that, which you can read below. He used to work at Irrational, and actually worked on XCOM for a bit. I asked him about that, too. His answer has something to do with Warhammer 40′s second edition.(more…)

The early/mid 90s was a confusing time to love Sega games. Sure, they were still pumping out classic software left, right and centre, but they couldn’t make their mind up about which piece of home console hardware they wanted you to own the most. The Mega CD was a CD based expansion for their trusty Mega Drive, which let you play many of the same games as you could play on cartridges, just with higher audio fidelity and price tags. There was also a few Mega CD exclusive games though, probably most noteworthy was their flagship platforming mascot’s imaginately titled Sonic CD, which is now heading to PC (again). (more…)

Lots of people are talking about Wonderputt, even though it’s a Flash crazy golf game…wait, come back! It’s a Flash crazy golf game with alien abductions and rocket ships! I can’t help but notice that people are still walking away, pretending to have urgent appointments elsewhere, perhaps with more complex and worthy games. Well, forget those games for a minute. I made Wonderputt sound zany, didn’t I, with all that clamouring about alien abductions? It’s not zany, I promise you. Although the voiceover in this trailer also makes it sound like it might be wacky, which is another thing it’s not.

When I see the initials “DLC” not preceded by the word “free” it always makes me wimper a little and remember the effort that once went into expansion packs. Fortunately the generous folks behind Starpoint Gemini have remembered the correct prefix for their freshly announced new content for the space tactic-em-up, called Gladiators.

More games should receive updates like this. “Mucus grenade buffed significantly, maybe even too significantly!” The fact that there is a mucus grenade in the first place is startling and compelling, the fact that it may have become too powerful demands research and investigation. The game with the possibly overbuffed mucus grenade is free indie team-based shooter Masjin. The best way I can describe it is the sidescrolling bastard child of Team Fortress, Worms and Minecraft. With vehicles. It’s a fantastic example of a game that promotes proper teamwork while also finding time to celebrate chaos and destruction. However, there are problems. This is a game in need of a stronger online community so, to herald its latest and potentially final update, I point you in its direction to bolster those ranks.

They Sunday Papers! Here they are again, this is what Sundays are for. I’ve been detonating dynamite in the murky depths of the internet and collecting what floats to the surface. Let’s take a look at my sack full of stunned links.

  • Well I don’t usually put video links as the lead article on the SP, but GDC have posted Thomas Grip’s Evoking Emotions and Achieving Success By Breaking All The Rules, a talk about the making of Amnesia. Everyone who is even vaguely interested in how games are made, and why they are made in the way that they are made, should watch this. (Oh and you should buy Amnesia, if you haven’t already.)

Rab is away this week, so no Cardboard Children. I barely know anything about boardgames, so I won’t bother to try and fill you in, and instead I will turn to the previous fill-in guy and ask if he’ll talk about boardgames for us. Oh, he will! That’s great. Perhaps he’ll provide us with a video to post in the empty space below? Good! Okay then.(more…)

It’s Saturday, that can only mean one thing. Ok, I guess it means several things: Lie ins, spending the afternoon in the pub, rubbish sports on the telly. But it also means cheap games, and here they all are, waiting for you to gobble them up. If you’re still greedy for more delicious discounted gaming, you can find a feast of cheap games catalogued daily over at SavyGamer.co.uk. Here’s this week’s deals: (more…)

Trying to describe the hour I spent with Alexander Bruce's PAX 10 Finalist indie game, Antichamber, is going to be one of the most difficult descriptive feats I've ever attempted. I think that the big hang-up is that it's going to mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people: For me, my time with the game was all about learning the obscure rules of a universe with no immediate context; a game about second, then third, then fourth-guessing my own actions until I found a solution I was able to walk away from with just a modicum of satisfaction.

For the person who took up the demo after me, it was about moving forward as quickly he could, attempting to adhere to an entirely pointless 90-minute time limit while ignoring all the lessons the game had to teach. Here's the thing: I'm not entirely sure either of us was playing it wrong.

Blizzard is running some initial stress tests on the Diablo 3 servers with the Friends and Family beta run, where each of Blizzard's roughly 5,000 employees can invite five people to play. Of these 25,000 potential beta testers, at least one released screens of the beta program, which can be viewed on Diablo IncGamers.

Information about the limited beta run comes via the Russian-language B.net forum, which states that keys for closed-beta testers will be sent out only after an official announcement. There will not be an NDA for the beta, so once it launches we can expect a veritable flurry of information and screencaps. A flurry, we say.

There may well be only one epic action RPG you need in the nebulous ‘Coming Soon’ bracket and it speaks for itself.

“The Real Texas is an action adventure game that plays like a mashup of Zelda: Link to the Past and Ultima VI. Sam, an ordinary Texas rancher, is on holiday in England when he falls into a blue portal and lands in The Strange Texas.”

A trailer follows. It includes clothes shopping, chickens and a floating eye-cube called Yolanda.

Interested in being the master of a whole world -- or being a total slave to the rules of one? Two games newly added to GOG's DRM-free lineup will let you experience both. Populous lets you build a world and a civilization, and then ... you know, unleash natural disasters upon it.

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar puts you in the role of a hero who must save the land of Britannia while adhering strictly to eight virtues. Thrift isn't one of those virtues, but it's still something you can practice with this game, as GOG is giving it away for free! If you want to pay for some Ultimas, the first three are also up.

The Miner Wars team send word that they’ve just released a major update for the game (which is in a pre-orders-pay-for-alpha-access-state) which includes a in-game editor. They explain: “Build your own space ship, space station or any sort of space-like edifice you can think of. These structures are be made from prefab modules, and in the future we’re looking to feature ’total destructibility’ for these objects. Prefab modules include tunnels, lattices, beams and panels as well as diverse chambers and special devices. You can also upload your hand-made sectors to the server and let your friends play them!” I had a mess about with the initial tech demo that was released last year, and it was genuinely impressive, if totally empty at that time. It now features all kinds of stuff, including AI bads and so on. Is anyone still playing around with it?

Full list of updates and latest (by latest I mean totally ancient) video below.(more…)

How many of you are still playing Running With Rifles, the murky yet marvellous top-down tactical shooter Jim introduced you to a while back? Unless the answer is most of you, it’s not enough. Maybe you thought the game wouldn’t receive any significant updates for an age. I’m pleased to announce that you were very wrong indeed. So, stand corrected, chin up, and prepare to go forth and battle once more. This alpha 0.351 update doesn’t add tanks, planes or classes, it’s simply an evolution of the core concept, which is tiny armies of soldiers shooting each other. How do you make that more entertaining? Improved map graphics mean you’ll have a better idea of where your little man is needed on the battlefield, which cuts down on some of the mindless running and gives a better sense of how dynamic the ongoing war is. Soon they’ll have to change the name to Fighting With Rifles. Battles also tend to be larger, though you’ll still have skirmishes, in part thanks to what appears to be a genuinely improved AI that picks its scraps more sensibly. There’s a lot more going on now and, most importantly, it’s more fun. Put that in the changelog. Here’s hoping for regular updates of this quality.

Iron Helmet (they of superb multiplayer web-strategies Neptune’s Pride and Blight Of The Immortals) send word that they have a new game out! It’s called Jupiter’s Folly, and well, I’ll let Jay explain: “It’s kind of like Neptune’s Pride and kind of like Blight of the Immortals but to make things a bit different we’ve added some card game mechanics. Everything you can do in the game is represented by a card. If you want more troops you play a card, if you want to call in an orbital strike, that’s a card too. The object of the game is to be the first to mine 5000 tons of “Crystal”. It’s a race. You build mines around the map and then have to protect them from the other players.”

You can already sign up and play. Go! Go! Go! Oh my God. We’re in real danger of it happening again, aren’t we? Video below!(more…)

Chivalry is not dead! Phew. It’s been a long time since I’ve chivalled so when Maldita Castilla’s demo asked me to don armour and beard to fight off a wave of evil in the cursed Kingdom of Castile, I immediately sprang into action. We’ve talked about Locomalito’s lovingly crafted games before and this is shaping up to be a beauty. But what is it? Well, the most important thing about Maldita Castilla is that it’s not Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins. The second most important thing is that it’s really bloody close to being Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins.

You can buy Ninja Spirit from the Mac App Store right now for $10. Well, OK, it's part of the Irem Arcade Hits collection by DotEmu, which also throws in games like Kung Fu Master, Vigilante, and Hammerin' Harry -- 18 in all -- but all you really need to know is that this is a convenient delivery system for Ninja Spirit, a truly excellent side-scrolling ninja game.

The Mac version is a new release, but there's been a PC version available for some time now -- if that's your platform of choice for arcade collections, you can buy that direct from DotEmu, DRM-free.

I am not a cruel enough man to recommend that anyone plays Is It Time?, for it is not enjoyable and it contains a bleak message of despair that made me feel empty inside. Even more so than usual. It’s also quite definitely one of those indie art games that a lot of people simply have no time for. If that is the case, may I suggest that it probably has no time for you either. Or maybe it has all the time in its rapidly diminishing world. Despite not being able to recommend you play it, I am going to leave a link here and suggest that you consider clicking on it. Be warned, it’s bleak and in many ways it’s boring, but then it’s a game about loneliness and death so I could perhaps also call it honest.
