When I try to talk to people about turn-based strategy games they tend to roll their eyes, fake a yawn or change the subject. But XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the type of game that can change their opinion on the genre.

Do I care that most the characters you’ll spot in the lovely trailer for Wreck-It Ralph are from consoles and arcades? No I do not. Because I’m super-happy after watching a trailer for a movie not based on a game, but based on the concept of games. It looks, incredibly, like there might be a game-themed film that doesn’t make me want to pull out my own arms. And from Disney, no less. The game: try to see how many licensed game characters you can spot in each scene.

With all the press conferences over, and the action switching to the show floor, it’s time to ask that all-important question: Who won E3? Because saying what games are coming out is a game. One you can win. And we decide who that was.

Let’s begin with the rules: Firstly, naturally, no slaps. Secondly, don’t forget the Hotpants Bonus! And of course most importantly, dubstep.

It is with good reason that RPS has been paying close attention to the development of zombie RPG, Dead State. Created by Obsidian veterans, Brian Mitsoda and Annie Carlson, the survivalist role-player is bursting with potential. And now, as you might expect for such an ambitious indie project, it has a Kickstarter. And a trailer. We spoke to both developers (on their anniversary, no less), to get an absolutely enormous wealth of information about the game.

After alternately watching live feeds of the press conferences last night, and watching colleagues’ reactions to them on Twitter, I awake with a heavy cynicism for the entire industry. While a couple of new IPs were announced, and they were perhaps even interesting, the overwhelming message of the LA evening was one of partisanship, stagnation, and a disturbing lack of awareness of what is most problematic in the gaming world. Which can pretty much be summed up in the frighteningly repeated phrase, “With exclusive DLC for our console.”

Back in the old days, when only 12 people read RPS, each and every one of them hated me to the core because I said I didn’t think the original Painkiller was a very good videogame. I wonder what happens when I say that now? I think we can all agree that these long years of expansion packs and exandydandelions haven’t exactly done great favours for ‘the brand’, though. Looks like this may be about to change, as the Nordic Games-published/funded Painkiller: Hell & Damnation has the auspices of a high-budget reboot. Polish (and thus not Nordic, confusingly) devs The Farm 51 perhaps don’t have too much known heritage behind them – Necrovision primarily, although apparently collaborated on The Witcher and Two Worlds II. They’re getting to play with the Unreal 3 engine for this, and if these screenies are legit rather than the shot of the bull this could be a bit of a treat for those who crave high-speed, high-gloss demon-slaying.

Read on for some more pics, and a comment from a man with the best name in the world.(more…)

SmartGlass will launch worldwide this fall, Microsoft announced during its pre-E3 conference. It showed off some SmartGlass functionalities during its pre-E3 conference, demonstrating the app sharing content between mobile devices and the Xbox 360. Smart Glass started playing Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on a tablet and pushed it to Xbox, to finish watching it. The tablet provided additional information about the movie as it continued playing on the large screen.

The Madden NFL franchise will support SmartGlass, allowing players to make plays on a tablet and run them on the TV.

Peter Molyneux has introduced a game called Curiosity from his 22 Cans studio, coming to PC and iOS in about six weeks. Appearing on Spike TV this morning, Molyneux showed off screens of the game on an iPad, and said it would be the first of his experimental games out of the brand new studio he started after leaving Lionhead.

Six weeks isn't long to wait, so we'll see more about this one soon.
