The only game I’ve actually played today has an ‘@’ where you might expect to see a person, not even bothering to trot down to uncanny avenue, and yet I find myself posting a second video with actual human beings in it, running around and doing things, ambulating and acting. This trailer feels like a call to arms as Heroes & Generals looks to expand its beta community and although live action advertisements for digital playgrounds should rightly be pelted with vials of furious wasps this is an enjoyably silly example. There’s a part when some people pretend to be a tank and that’s always good to see. When I play (soon), it’ll be mostly for the bikes and…well, watch to the very end.

Arty indie types MoaCube – whose lovedly Co-Op is worth a look – have just released the beautiful and ominous-sounding visual novel Cinders, which is a lavishly illustrated retelling of the Cinderella story. They reckon it’s a “serious” approach to the famous story, which ditches the original protagonist in favour of a “story about balancing freedom and dreams with circumstance and harsh reality; about growing up and finding out the true meaning of independence.” Yes, you know the sort of thing, I suspect.

It’s got a demo, so you can play a sample of the thing. And a trailer, which you can look at below.(more…)

Clean ‘Em Up is a neon-drenched twinstick shooter and the first commercial release from Amidos, an Egyptian indie developer. Although it’s unlikely to surprise anyone who has played anything of this sort since Geometry Wars pointed the way toward the abstract, Clean ‘Em Up has a pleasing variety of guns to attach to either your front or your rear. Thematically, your front and rear belong to a particularly belligerent antivirus program, careening through hard drives and shooting all sorts of viruses before they can infect files, making them attack, zombie-like. There’s a decent variety of enemies and herding them makes for a less frantic experience than in the brilliant but Adam-crushing Waves. There’s a demo here, the full game’s on Desura for £2.99 and I’ve concealed a trailer below.

Tiny And Big is currently available on Good Old Games, GamersGate and Steam. A ten buck indie project that’s been in development for a couple of years, how does its sandbox mechanics stand up to being in a full game? I’ve sliced, roped and rocketed my way through the game, and if you don’t let me tell you Wot I Think I’ll chop you in half and push you off a cliff.

Crytek won't be making a traditional retail TimeSplitters title, according to Cevat Yerli, the company's CEO (not a huge surprise, really). In an interview with VideoGamer, Yerli said he wished the company could develop it, saying, "I love the idea, I love the brand, I love everything - but the publishers don't." He added that he doesn't "want to spend [Crytek's] money on the project in a retail business."

It sounds dour to be sure, but Yerli quickly turned the tables, saying that TimeSplitters could be resurrected as a free-to-play title. Crytek recently made some waves announcing that it would be moving entirely toward a free-to-play business model after the launch of Crysis 3. The transition will be supported entirely by GFACE, Crytek's own game-streaming service.

Regarding the possibility of a new TimeSplitters on GFACE, Yerli was pretty clear: "I love the picture of a Timesplitters running on GFACE."

When a TimeSplitters sequel was referred to as gaming's Bigfoot - its Yeti, if you will - Yerli noted that "if we get enough fans, being loud enough," then "the Yeti can come back, on GFACE."

The mixing of 2D and 3D in game world is no longer a new idea, but Perspective – a game from game-development education crucible DigiPen – certainly has a special take on it, as you can see in the video below. It’s remarkably clever. Not just in the idea itself – in which a 2D character navigates a 3D world, and the camera control of the FPSing player alters the 2D space that character has to navigate by shifting perspective – but in the construction of the puzzles which make use of that concept. I am not sure why I am bothering to try and explain it, really, other than to emphasize that you should take a look, and then do that raised eyebrow thing you do when someone has been impressively clever.(more…)

I’ve previously hypothesised that one day every novel platforming mechanic will have been thought of, and on that day we all have to pack up and go home. We’re not there yet, but even Spin Spin‘s creator Chris Hughes admits it’s borrowed its core idea from And Yet It Moves. Although never mind, frankly, as it’s done so nicely here in this bite-sized web-based episode. It’s your afternoon tea distraction.

That thing right there? I do believe it’s some form of Moroccan crab man, and its virtual existence forces me to face a very profound dilemma. See, I am immediately curious about every facet of its existence – context within the story, capabilities, linguistic background, favorite food, blood type, opinion on jazz music’s current place in society, what crabomancy actually entails, etc – but, on second thought, maybe I don’t want answers to any of those things. Maybe the truth can’t live up to the lofty legend I’ve already fished out of my imagination’s briniest depths. I must ponder. While I do that, why don’t you watch the entire Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3 trailer that produced this delightful specimen of meaty clawed magic?

I went to a firing range once. Now, don’t get the wrong idea: I had no pretensions of “Oh, I’ve played first-person shooters, so this will be a bullet-casing-encrusted cakewalk.” I was not able to pre-fathom, however, just how truly terrible I’d be. Even the simple act of loading rounds into my borrowed 9mm pistol’s magazine was – at least, at first – an awkward, embarrassing battle of man vs incredibly simple machine. And, of course, I made all the rookie mistakes: I forgot to turn the safety off, my aim kept getting shaken up by recoil that wouldn’t rattle a baby, etc. All the while, I couldn’t help but wonder: “How do people who are actually good at this do it?” This wasn’t helped by the couple standing in the stall next to me, gleefully unloading a gigantic automatic rifle.

Receiver – Wolfire’s every-aspect-of-a-gun simulating entry in the recent 7DFPS challenge – reminded me all-too-painfully of that day. But, you know, in a mostly good way. And with a twist: I had to bring my horrific lack of firearm know-how, abysmal aim, and woefully non-bulletproof body into an environment full of things that definitely knew what they were doing.

If you don't own Civilization 5 yet, have heard good things about the Gods and Kings expansion, and have a steady Internet connection to play games on, then streaming service OnLive has a deal for you. It's offering the Civ 5 core game PlayPass for free when you buy Gods and Kings, essentially giving you the entire critically acclaimed title and its add-on for $29.99.

What you're buying here is the chance to play them on OnLive, however, which gives you the benefit of running the game as if you're on a high-end PC (even if you're on a Mac or a low-end PC), as long as you have an Internet connection with the bandwidth to stream it. As long as you've got the pipes for streaming HD video, this is the way to jump on the Civ 5 wagon, as the same deal on Steam will currently run you $60. OnLive says the door's closing on this one at the end of this week.

Receiver is a gorgeous, intense new first-person shooter that explores the mechanics of handling a Colt 1911 A1. Developed during a seven-day FPS challenge, Receiver has you unraveling a conspiracy while exploring a building infested with deadly turrets and drones.

But there's more to it than that - once you die in Receiver, it's game over. A new game is immediately loaded with a new set of randomly placed rooms, enemies, and weapons.

Receiver from Wolfire Games is available for $5 on PC and Mac, or free for those who have pre-ordered Wolfire's Overgrowth.

Aha, I was a bit worried this might not see a PC release. Weird on both counts, given PC was originally its lead platform and, well, it’s a pretty boring game so it’s strange that I’d care. Absent makes the heart grow less exasperated, I suppose. Yes, Doom 3 BFG, complete with new sections, improved levels, tuned controls, added checkpoints and sweet mother of God a mounted-flashlight, will be out on PC. When? MAYBE I’M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU.(more…)

With the Western gaming industry, or at least the traditional boxed product aspect of it, currently in the doldrums (just ask Max Payne) many eyes have turned Eastwards. Huge audiences, huge development manpower, increasingly huge piles of cash, both real and potential. China especially is slowly moving into (and being moved into for) games, despite having a mainland ban of sorts on consoles, and the next major herald of its intentions comes in the news that Chinese giant Tencent has bought up 10% of Jazz Jackrabbit developer, Epic.(more…)

Though you'd expect a game called "Tiny & Big" to be primarily about growing and shrinking, the trailer for Black Pants' debut PC/Mac game reveals more of an emphasis on lasers! And ropes! And rocket devices! We haven't seen so much destruction visited upon desert rocks since Wile E. Coyote.

Tiny & Big is available today from Steam, GOG, GamersGate, and the official website. You can also buy it in a box from Amazon.de, if you prefer your games to be packed in German boxes.Indie puzzle adventure 'Tiny & Big' gets into 'Grandpa's Leftovers' today

If I sent out a press release saying that my dissertation on ‘the nature of time and the stage in Beckett’s theatre’, was online and free to download I reckon more people would throw rocks at me than would download the blasted thing. Not so with student games. This is the third or fourth I’ve posted in recent weeks and Vicinity: Warp Reality is another impressive piece of work. Like several others I’ve seen, it’s a first person puzzler. I guess the style allows for imaginative elements of layout and motion in a 3D space, which probably ticks lots of design boxes. The fourth part is where things become interesting. Download here.
