Introversion used their developer session at Rezzed to explain why they had canned Subversion, and how the technology and ideas from that had become Prison Architect, which was playable at the show. It’s certainly worth a look, and you can watch the session – which includes some footage of Subversion – below. Relatedly, you can also read my take Prison Architect here and here.(more…)

So it was promised, so shall it be. After a brief introduction to Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms – which promised an MMO in which “players form alliances through Player vs. Player (PvP), Siege combat, and politics to control Westeros” – Bigpoint vanished into the seat-and-BO-flavored mists of Comic-Con. And from that primordial ooze of glorious geekery, it’s now produced one trailer. It features betrayal, war, power, and GIANT WORDS introducing each. Find it after the rather unimposing Wall that is our break.

The internet has decided that a picture on Clint Hocking’s twitter feed of his son at Valve’s industrial heart is confirmation that the Far Cry 2 designer is now absolutely definitely working for the Half Life honchos and most probably turning Episode Three into a work of divisive genius that throws out the baby and the bathwater, and then replaces them with something far more awesome than a tiny, dirty human. Maybe he’s just consulting, maybe he’s visiting a friend, but as he left his post at Lucasarts a couple of weeks back for “something new” the internet may well be right on this one. So, Clint Hocking is now lead designer of all development at Valve.

DayZ, the zombie-focused mod for ultra-realistic shooter Arma 2, has reached the 500,000 user milestone, the dev's Twitter account revealed today.

"Congratulations everyone, with your support through tough times, mistakes, troubles, and technical problems, we now have over 500k users," the tweet revealed. The 'Alpha Version' of DayZ, which requires Arma 2 and its standalone expansion Operation Arrowhead, was released in April 2012.

Speaking earlier this week at the indie-focused event, Rezzed, mod creator Dean Hall said his free mod will soon eclipse sales of Arma 2 at the rate it's being downloaded.

"Currently we're running 22,000 concurrent at full peak, and 10,000 off peak, which is pretty huge numbers considering the original data structure and system was designed to handle 100 concurrents, and two servers," Hall said during his talk, according to Eurogamer.

Hall, who works for Arma developer Bohemia Interactive, revealed that an estimated 400,000 users had experienced the mod by Friday, July 7, and noted an average of about 10,000 new users were jumping into the fray each day.

Talawa Games, developers of handsome-looking side-scrolling physics-puzzler Unmechanical, have sent word that they’re teaming up with to the team behind The Ball, Teotl, to, well, develop Unmechanical. Obviously. They explain the premise of their new game like so: “Unmechanical begins with a twist of fate as you’re spirited away by a network of coiled pipes into a mysterious underworld. You find yourself in a strange environment that pulsates from mechanic and organic machinery alike, and your journey to freedom begins. Flying freely through the odd and fantastic surroundings, a powerful tractor beam lets you pick up objects and interact with the world.”

The game will be out on PC on August 8th, and on the iPad a few weeks after that. There’s a trailer below with some of the most fantastic 3D company logos I have ever seen. Impressive.(more…)

Robot Rising is actually a Facebook-bound ARPG, featuring robots. But do they rise at all? Well, maybe a little bit, but mostly they kill other robots on a 2D plane. Not much rising involved there. But anyway, even if you think social games are at an “evolutionary dead end” there’s still a glimmer of hope in the likes of the Robot Rising devs, Stop Games, saying that they believe Facebook needs “core” games for more traditional gamers. Perhaps it does. And ARPGs might be a step in the right direction for that. Gunshine wasn’t too bad, either.

In summary: Robot Rising is in beta now, and there’s a trailer for its announcening below. Now it’s time for us all to make cup of tea simultaneously. Go!(more…)

The penultimate event of Rezzed saw me trying to organise a collection of people far more talented than I into making videogames within an hour. Less than an hour, in fact, as I hadn’t factored in getting to the stage and plugging everything in. Locked in a junk-filled sideroom, members of the Creative Assembly, Mode7, Littleloud, The Indie Stone, Strongman Games, Thomas Was Alone and more speed-coded frantically, then without pause were dragged on stage by me and interviewed about what they’d done. They did very, very well, and you can play most of resultant games below.

Richard "Lord British" Garriott is in the middle of a new gaming venture called Portalarium (it's working on a social game for Facebook and iOS called Ultimate Collection: Garage Sale), and he's just been able to convince a round of venture capitalists to support his projects, to the tune of roughly $7 million.

The money will also be used to build a social RPG tentatively titled "New Britannia," which may have ties to the Ultima tradition, as well as new school features like asychronous gameplay and social profiles.

Portalarium was announced to be one of the launch companies in Zynga's upcoming partner program, so Garriott and crew are definitely laying the foundations to launch some large and well-supported titles. Ultimate Collection is supposed to be available to play sometime later on this year.

Blizzard has pushed patch 1.0.3b live in Diablo 3, and in addition to a few random bugfixes with General chat and the tutorial sequences, the patch brings another wrinkle to real-money spending with the game. You can now buy various in-game commodities (including gems, dyes, and crafting and leveling materials) with real money, which means Blizzard has turned an unofficial black market for items in Diablo 2 into a very official real-money market in Diablo 3.

Gold sales still aren't live, but Blizzard says it hopes to enable real-money purchasing of in-game gold in the future. In the meantime, however, you can now put money into your Battle.net account and buy away, or try to sell your in-game items for real money. For better or worse, it's game on.

Terrifically named screen-wrapping, teleportation collectathon, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, is a PC remake of a ZX Spectrum game. That doesn’t mean the original is older than grandpa Albuquerque’s dinosaur steed though because this particular ZX game was made in 2012. That’s almost certainly the same year that you’re reading this and, if it isn’t, go and play 2013′s best-selling first-person remake of Q*bert until your eyeballs emit lightshows of their own creation. David Hughes made the ZX version and the PC remake comes to us courtesy of RGCD. The game, manual, posters artwork and MP3s can all be found here. Trailer below.

Rezzed had many highlights, and it’s faintly possible that insane people believe watching me try to construct a little man out of chewing gum and my own spittle was one of them. This was just one of the many strange and possibly dangerous tasks in the live trial by that was the 5th International Indie Mudwrestling Championships, an on-stage panel show hosted with golden-voiced aplomb by Mr John Walker. Adam Smith and I headed up a team respectively, with ample support from indie devs Andrew J Smith of Spilt Milk and Dave Johnston of Smudged Cat. Surprisingly, at no juncture were we booed off stage. We had a live pun thread, Adam and I almost exploded, we listened to the Donkey Kong rap and John kept forgetting that RPS only covers PC games.

Watch our mouths move and words come out of them, sometimes followed by the reassuring sound of laughter, below.(more…)

Kickstarter have announced that the people of the UK will be able to start up projects on the crowdsourcing platform beginning this autumn. And they actually say ‘autumn’ instead of Fall or the Holiday Season. Huzzah, jolly good show and so forth. I’m sure there are plenty of up and coming developers who will welcome this move but I didn’t think of the young and the talented, I thought of the industry giants, a fair few of whom might well jump on this opportunity to return to their roots having seen what the platform has done for the likes of Fargo and Schafer. Think of all the wonders that Kickstarter could offer to this great nation. Below, a sampling of tomorrow’s headlines.
