The latest trailer for BioWare and EA's wicked expensive MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic gives players a brief introduction to each of the game's eight classes before beckoning them to "Join the Fight." We'd be more than happy to, provided BioWare finally gives us a firm release date outside of "holiday 2011."

Every MMO developer likes to think that their game will last longer than the norm. That norm, for AAA Western MMOs, is growing increasingly brief. Which makes BioWare’s ambitions for Star Wars: The Old Republic, impressively bold. Discussing what their game will be doing in 2025 requires the sort of cajones that can only impress us into believing them. That’s what Eurogamer reported that Darth Hater reported.

Being the time for all things collectible, we wouldn't be surprised if an official announcement of the Star Wars: The Old Republic collectors edition were to be issued this week during Comic-Con -- but there's no need to wait for such an announcement. GameStop has listed the $150 collectors edition now, with perfectly official-looking art and a description of the contents.

According to GameStop, your investment into the fancier edition of BioWare's MMO will get you a "Gentle Giant Darth Malgus statue," a metal case, "The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural," a map, a soundtrack, and seven in-game items -- including an exclusive CE-only in-game store.

In addition, GameStop bonuses include a "color stone" to change your lightsaber's color (also found in a Polish retailer's recent listing) and early access! That's a pretty significant bonus -- not that we know when the release date is yet, much less the early access period.

Update: Well, that didn't take long. It's official, and available for pre-order now -- and, in addition to this version, there's also an Origin-exclusive "Digital Deluxe Edition" with all the in-game extras, 30 days of game time, and none of the tangible extras.

Yesterday’s leak of the Star Wars: The Old Republic special edition has proven, not surprisingly, to be accurate. With ComicCon starting today, EA have somewhat pre-empted their in-show announcement by going official with the various packages on their site, perhaps in response to the rumours that swirled yesterday. However, while confirming everything that was expected (including that spunky mouse), they’ve yet to add a proper price to it all, despite claiming you can pre-order now. And as for the regular versions – the prices out there are looking ridiculous.

How much do you think you’d pay for Star Wars: The Old Republic? Signs point toward BioWare/EA opting for an old-school subscription model, as well as charging for a boxed copy of the game to start – so very 2007. So, perhaps £30 for the game and £8-£10 a month thereafter? You’d be happy with that? Well, some rumours revealed by NeoGAF, as posted on BetaCake, seem to suggest you could opt to pay an awful lot more for a special edition. A special edition with an awful lot of stuff.

We were pretty upset when we saw Alderaan get totally blown to smithereens in A New Hope, but now that the Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer posted after the jump has shown us what type of unsavory characters lived there, we're not sure it's actually that great of a loss.

When Electronic Arts decided to heavily push its Origin web portal and distribution service at E3, alongside word it would be the exclusive home to Star Wars: The Old Republic, it became an open question whether EA would continue to play ball with Steam. We appear to have an answer to that question, with Crysis 2, Alice: Madness Returns and Battlefield 3 all disappearing.

So far, I've been unable to get an answer from any party involved. Valve, EA and Crytek have all, to date, remained unresponsive. Other outlets are reporting a statement's coming later today.

You can still, however, purchase other EA games on Steam. Crysis and Need for Speed are still there, as is the Need for Speed series. It mostly seems that EA's chosen to start holding back its most recent and upcoming releases, in hopes of driving consumer traffic to its own service.

As soon as I know more, I'll pass it on.

UPDATE: Electronic Arts has responded to my questions regarding its current relationship with Steam, claiming Crysis 2 was not removed from Steam because EA asked. Instead, EA claims Steam "imposed a set of business terms" that resulted in an existing agreement Crytek had regarding Crysis 2 that "violates the new rules," resulting in the "expulsion" of Crysis 2.

The full statement is below.

I've asked EA for better clarification on what "business terms" have changed and why games like Alice: Madness Returns are no longer on Steam. I've also requested comment from Valve.

"It’s unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service. This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more."
