Last month, John wrote about same sex relationships in Skyrim and SW:TOR. Specifically the fact that the Elder Scrolls will allow them while Star Wars will not. Now, in what I’m going to refer to as an extraordinary volte-face, BioWare have confirmed that “same gender romances with companion characters” will be in the game. As a “post-launch feature”. The full official quote, which I extracted from The Old Republic’s forum, is below.

We're sorry to break the news to such honorable professions as Jedi, Bounty Hunter and Trooper in such a public forum, but we will not be playing as you when Star Wars: The Old Republic launches. We will be playing as a Smuggler, because the trailer above makes that class seem hot like fire.

Star Wars: Galaxies had a brilliant idea at its core; to let people live in the Star Wars world without letting them all be Jedi from the moment they register. You had to earn the right because it doesn’t make sense for every single person to be a member of an exclusive and rare sect. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, I have no desire to be a Jedi at all. I want to be a smuggler and Bioware have released a new trailer to show exactly why.

While a release date announcement for BioWare's anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has yet to be made, Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown is talking about what will happen at launch. As reported by Gamasutra, EA has been studying Blizzard's World of Warcraft, which launched in late 2004 and reportedly still has over 11 million subscribers...

EA's CFO Eric Brown announced at the Citi 2011 Tech Conference today that Battlefield 3 has already racked up 1.25 million pre-orders, putting it "well ahead" of the previous Battlefield title, Bad Company 2, at the same time leading up to launch. Over ten times more, in fact.

That game sold 2.3 million copies in the first month of release, and has sold over 9 million copies according to the most recent financial reports, so presumably, Battlefield 3 is on track to do even better than that. Brown said that EA expects to make full use of "the advantage of a two-and-a-half week early launch window versus our competitor," Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Brown also spoke about pre-orders for EA's other big release this fall, Star Wars: The Old Republic, but declined to provide actual numbers. Star Wars: The Old Republic will have a smaller marketing budget than Battlefield 3 at launch, but EA expects to support it over a longer length of time. Brown said that SW:TOR would have "a different spend curve," but that demand so far "is tracking consistent with our expectations."

Rejoice potential padawan! Bioware announced at their PAX Star Wars: The Old
Republic
panel that they're going to be rolling out a whole slew of beta invites to
appease your debilitating midichlorian habit. Starting September 2, keep an eye on your
inbox, as they'll be periodically sending them out during the month.

They will, however, still be limiting the number of day one copies available. Do try and
keep your blasters, lightsabers and second lightsabers holstered until then.

You’d imagine gaming would lead the way on more liberal values, but it’s surprising still how rare LGBT characters are in games. The compromise tends to be Sims-like polysexuality, almost no characters deliberately written as anything other than straight, with rare exceptions. One such company that tends to recognise a same-sex relationship is BioWare, which makes the news that The Old Republic won’t be supporting them a little surprising. It seems Star Wars might not have room for gays. However, it in better news, we learn today that the realms of Skyrim will not only allow same-sex relationships, but also same-sex marriage.

EA isn't saying what the magic cut-off moment is for pre-order sales of The Old Republic.

Electronic Arts is going to prevent you from buying Star Wars: The Old Republic at some point--and I'm not talking about the inevitable future where the servers are coming down. EA has confirmed reports out of Gamescom the publisher will be limiting both retail and digital pre-orders of BioWare's Star Wars MMO, in order to control the game's initial rollout.

"We are limiting launch quantities of Star Wars: The Old Republic to ensure players have a smooth and high quality game experience and service at launch," said a company spokesperson over email.

The spokesperson was unwilling to disclose what the cut-off number is for The Old Republic sales, but did confirm its extension into retail.

MMOs have notoriously bad launches, with companies consistently finding themselves unable to handle the first waves of players jumping onto the servers. Early adopters can find themselves without a game to play. MMOs have proven time and time again that you can stress test for months and still not be prepared for the real thing.

A cynic would look at this news and figure it's just a way to generate more headlines, with press release proclaiming the game being "sold out" or "almost sold out" to help encourage early sales. It'd be nice to be proven wrong.

We don't have a release date for the game yet, however. EA has said it's definitely coming before the end of its fiscal year at the end of next March, but is hoping to release it before the end of the year.

"We’re holding the date for two reasons," said EA Games president Frank Gibeau back in May. "First, we don't want to tip off the competition; second, we want more data from the beta test to guarantee a spectacular experience at launch."

If you ever feel like taking a break from cutting through folks with laserswords, Star Wars: The Old Republic will include a somewhat wackier game mode that should suit your needs. It's called "Huttball" -- a neutral Player vs. Player Warzone which is likely the closest thing the MMO will have to an official sport. Unless, of course, they invent ligthsaber baseball, which seems unlikely for several obvious reasons.

The game tasks two teams with securing a neutral ball and running it into the opposing teams endzone. Just like football! Only with more Force-choking. Check out the trailer above to get a taste of space sports.

In an attempt to prevent its servers from collapsing under the weight of a million Force-hungry MMO-players, EA will artificially limit the number of copies -- both digital and retail -- of Star Wars: The Old Republic available at launch. An EA representative reportedly revealed the strategy at a Gamescom demo, but didn't divulge any details such as how many copies would be available, or how long it would take for more copies to be released once the quota is met.

We suppose this strategy makes sense, though we can't help but imagine the excuses BioWare and EA are going to have to come up with to explain why their downloads are sold out. "Bits? You want bits? Sorry friend. We're fresh out of those. Bytes too! Sorry about that. The drought's hitting us awful hard. The ... the technodrought."

If you're a Star Wars buff who happens to be Australian, or an arctic explorer, or a space-pilgrim on your way to colonize Hyperion, know that BioWare has totally got your back. In order to ensure that gamers in exotic locations still have access to the highest number of droids possible, BioWare has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will not be region or IP locked at launch.

Fresh-faced padawans and burgeoning sith lords will still have latency to content with, as no amount of midi-chlorians can break the laws of physics, but a little inconvenience never killed anyone. What has killed people, however, are the ice-tusked burrowing monstroliths of Hyperion. Be safe, brave explorers.

Given how politics play out in Star Wars (take, for example, 90% of The Phantom Menace), you might think "Jedi Consular" would be a boring class to play in The Old Republic. Judging by this video, you would be wrong. Like 90% of The Phantom Menace.

As depicted in this trailer, the Jedi Consular is an imposing, diplomatic Jedi who also throws stuff around with his mind, resists lightning shot at his chest, has complete mastery of a lightsaber, and can heal nearby allies with a wave of his hand. We can't tell if he's healing an armored trooper or a droid there at the end, but honestly, that's more than we can do either way.
