What Is Star Wars: The Old Republic? Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online game set in the Star Wars universe before the events of any of the films. Players will be able to play as members of The Republic or The Sith Empire...

#iknow I just had a hands-on demo with the hugely anticipated massively multiplayer role-playing game Star Wars: The Old Republic, but after an hour of watching self-described sizzle reels of prerendered and in-game footage of casually pirouetting Jedi and environments so full of foxfire and crepitating tails of energy, I couldn't actually make myself actually play the game. This isn't the Star Wars I love. This is a cartoon fantasy of a world that once felt lived in, ancient and crumbling, but is presented now-three-thousand years before the events of the Star Wars movies—as mawkishly digestible neoteny. The Star Wars: The Old Republic intro movie may have been so monumental that we entirely deliberately and definitely, definitely not accidentally posted it twice, but it sure did get a few backs up. All very pretty and very Original Trilogy, yes, but what on Earth has all that pre-rendered willy-waving got to do with playing an MMO? Fortunately, Bioware are now letting us a little closer to their multi-million-dollar baby, with a guided walkthrough of whiny Luke’s adopted homeland – the desert planet known as Tatooine.(more…)

Razer has announced that it will be producing four peripherals tailored for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The peripherals come packing the (ahem) sharp design that Razer is known for, along with a few slick technical features. The neatest of the bunch is the keyboard, which features a multi-touch LCD panel with a set of adaptive keys similar to those seen on the Razer Switchblade device. The backlit keys can even be converted to the Star Wars language of Aurebesh, which is neat, if not exactly useful.

The SWTOR Gaming Mouse features seventeen programmable buttons, twelve of which rest directly under the thumb. A 5.1 surround sound headset is also in the works. Finally, there's the mouse pad, which features "performance-grade" surfaces and a "non-slip, anti-reflective, abrasion-resistant hard coating." Presumably, you can drag a mouse on it real good. All can be customized to show either the Sith or Republic faction insignia as well.

The mouse and headset will run for $130, while the keyboard will command a hefty $200 price. If you just need something Old Republic, the mouse pad is the cheapest option at $50 but, then again, it's a mouse pad. All the peripherals will be available when The Old Republic launches, which remains as much of a mystery to Razer as it does to everyone else.

Check out pics of the hardware in the gallery below and a trailer after the break.

I typically don't like MMOs, but until recently, it's been difficult for me to define exactly why. I certainly don't mind investing a significant amount of time in a game, and while it's not my favorite thing to do, I'm not opposed to playing with other people. After my demo of Star Wars: The Old Republic today, BioWare helped me realize what should have been obvious: MMOs don't have engaging enough stories for my tastes...

We may have spoken too soon when we posted this morning's decidedly un-cinematic Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer. BioWare has once again released what's sure to be one of E3's most striking promo videos: The MMORPG's opening cinematic, which you'll find posted after the jump.
