GameSpy, a relic from times long before the modern Internet – or indeed, games and spies – existed is closing down. This on its own is not surprising as the multiplayer service is, by modern standards, buggy and kind of a joke, but it leaves a startling number of games with their e-wings clipped and their online-heaving hams strung in its wake. How many, you ask? Well, Reddit’s /r/Games board compiled a massive list, and the results aren’t pretty.

Yes, “the” Borderlands. The relentlessly silly blast-fest from Gearbox, as opposed to, um, that other Borderlands. Telltale might not seem like the most natural fit for a spinoff of the action-heavy RPG (which is less conversational and more often gunversational), but it’s happening, per Spike’s abysmally awkward VGX “award” show over the weekend. Also fired from the dudebro-centric network’s Big *crag*ing Announcement Gun: a Telltale Game of Thrones series, which was first rumored last month. Scant details on both below.

Hello travelers! The dream finally becomes a reality, as PlayStation, Gearbox Software and 2K announces today at Gamescom that the addictive first person shooter-looter mayhem of Borderlands 2 will be coming to PS Vita.

9551206850_10bd83f3af_z.jpg

I watched as Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, stood on stage at the Rezzed show in the UK a year ago and told fans that, with PlayStation’s support, he’d love to see Borderlands 2 on PS Vita. For the last year, Gearbox Software, 2K, and PlayStation have been inundated with emails, tweets, forum posts and more from passionate gamers across the world pleading for a PS Vita version of Borderlands 2. You spoke, we listened, and with the wonderful collaboration between 2K, PlayStation and the team at Iron Galaxy Studios – makers of indie fighting game Divekick – we can finally make Borderlands 2 on PS Vita a reality!

For those of you new to the critically acclaimed shooting-and-looting mayhem of Borderlands 2, which won more than 55 editorial awards in 2012, you’ll be picking from four uniquely-skilled Vault Hunters – Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker and Zer0 the Assassin – and then gunzerking your way through the world of Pandora in an attempt to defeat the corrupt Hyperion Corporation, led by the notorious Handsome Jack. Throughout these adventures, you will encounter a variety of distinctive, colorful characters including the explosive Tiny Tina, the (ex-)wife-of-many Mad Moxxi, and the friendly and energetic robotic companion CL4P-TP – you can call him Claptrap for short. That’s what his friends call him – or would, if he had any friends in the first place.

PS Vita gives Borderlands 2 fans the ability to play the game anywhere they want, complete with of all the unique benefits of the Vita system, and will truly bring the four-player cooperative experience to the palms of your hands. A new era of portable shoot-and-loot awaits! On behalf of Gearbox, 2K, and Sony, we want to thank the passionate fans for helping make Borderlands 2 on the PS Vita a reality, and we look forward to looting bazillions of guns with you guys on the go.

Borderlands 2 will be shipping on PS Vita in 2014 and will be published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Stay tuned for more information.

AnimeNEXT is a convention that isn't afraid to be risque, judging from these videos of recent NSFW cosplay burlesque performances. Mind, this is a more modern interpretation of burlesque—it's provocative show that can feature slapstick humor, skits, striptease acts and more. Up above we've got footage of Nana Valtiel, who performs her show dressed as a Maya the Siren from Borderlands 2. Valtiel is a part of a group called Cosplay Burlesque, which is a band of performers and cosplayers who do shows with the intention of making fandom a little naughtier. Why do burlesque of nerdy stuff? "Many cons have reoriented their programming to attract younger attendees, which is all well and good, but they haven't done much for the older crowd," the Cosplay Burlesque website explains. Valtiel wasn't the only performer at AnimeNEXT, of course. There's Esmerelda May, who also does a Borderlands performance—here she is dressed as Mad Moxxi: We've also got Allen Ryde, who does a Vega performance to some Enrique Iglesias: And here's a Sailor Moon performance, also courtesy of Esmerelda May:

Borderlands 2's Tiny Tina has got some bizarre quirks and qualities a vocal few openly denounce, but she's memorable in a way so few women in games are. All that, and she's still a little girl. The frenetic little firecracker is a bundle of energy, so it makes perfect sense that she should host a game of Bunkers & Badasses, an obvious parody of Dungeons & Dragons. In "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep," your go-to Vault Hunter rolls for initiative with Lilith, Brick, and Mordecai as part of the very first play session ever sanctioned. The final piece of Borderlands 2 DLC serves up a hilarious send-up of nerd culture sprinkled with nods to D&D, marinated in Tiny Tina's peculiar blend of humor.

Fast-traveling to the Unassuming Docks of Little Importance, we find our heroes embarking on their first role-playing adventure while a certain "Hyperion informant" is roughed up downstairs. After a brief interlude, the stage is set (by Bunker Master Tina of course) at Flamerock Refuse - a "nice place until the Handsome Sorcerer messed it up." The rainbow etched across the sky in this land of make-believe you're suddenly transported to doesn't exactly reflect an air of desolation, so Tina rectifies her mistake by instantly changing the scenery to something more eerie and hopeless, music included.

It's immediately obvious this scenario is a meta look at playing dungeon master and the way a D&D narrative can be altered so hastily. From then on, you're exploring the entire imaginary landscape on Tina's terms, which results in some giggle-worthy location names and terrain altering, as well as a bundle of surprises.

The Borderlands cosplay group hit up the London Comic Con earlier this month, and musical cosplay archivists SneakyZebra were on hand to capture the epic gathering of Gearbox Software's biggest fans in motion. I love cosplay groups, because I always feel sad for the one guy or girl showing up at the convention as the only person dressed to represent their particular game. They walk through the halls, head hung low to avoid catching sight of the happily cavorting cadres of Links, Zeldas and Marios. That was not happening at the London Comic Con, no sirree. The Borderlads and Borderlasses made that show their own. Power to the cel-shaded people.

During a panel at the SXSW Interactive Festival, Gearbox franchise director Matt Armstrong and Borderlands lead character designer Jonathan Hemingway provided a behind the scenes look at how the developer evolved its playable characters from faceless archetypes to its four-person killing crew.

Each character was originally conceived to give players a point of comparison to other genres or game franchises. The accessible and easy to use "Doom Guy" focused on giving classic shooter fans their familiar FPS fix; the tactical shooter archetype focused on delivering more strategic options, like in Metal Gear or Splinter Cell; and a world manipulator character concept wanted to give gamers a James Bond-like, gadget-focused killer.

Eventually, these original concepts - crudely drawn in shapes - evolved into the four playable characters featured in Borderlands.
