Rockstar's open-world epics Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto 4 are on sale as part of this week's series of exclusive deals for Xbox Live Gold members. Gold subscribers can currently pick up the digital version of GTA5 for $40.19, while GTA4 can be had for a mere $9.99.

Grand Theft Auto 4's DLC episodes are also on sale this week. The Lost and Damned is up for grabs at $4.99, while The Ballad of Gay Tony is $7.99 through next Monday.

Xbox One owners looking to score a deal this week can pick up Twisted Pixel's LocoCycle for $9.99 -- a permanent drop from its original asking price of $19.99. [Image: Rockstar]

Our attitudes towards games are very rarely cut and dry. Even in a wonderful, perfectly engineered game, you can still have lingering doubts. Likewise, you can fall in love with a game that is broken, yet does something very special.Read more...

In just three weeks of UK sales, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more copies than Grand Theft Auto 4 has in nearly five years of lifetime sales. The staggering statistics come courtesy of UK figure-gatherers Chart Track, who report GTA 5 is already the country's 12th biggest-selling game of all time.

To reiterate, this stat applies to UK sales. Still, with global sales surpassing $1 billion in the first three days, UK sales at 2.25 million copies in the first week, and now this, Rockstar is probably feeling okay about keeping the game on current-gen platforms (for now).

I'd never played a Grand Theft Auto before. I mean, I understood the draw, but ever since I'd played Mafia, I felt no beckon to follow The Sopranos through an open-world Manhattan de-make. Wise guy this, blip-blap that. The whole rigamarole sounded like a chore, really. On top of that, my new girrrrrrrrlfriend and I clearly had better things to do.Read more...

OK, maybe not officially, but modders are ensuring that Grand Theft Auto IV continues to sprout bells and whistles like a million retail chains the second Christmas shopping season starts. It’s become remarkably more attractive, gained entire landmasses, and received the most important upgrade of all: Iron Man. But that’s not enough. It can never be enough. So modders have taken to grandly thieving Grand Theft Auto V’s features and cramming them under GTA IV’s hood. First up: cross-city character-swapping.

HelixSnake, mostly famous for his amazing Skate 3 compilations, recently switched his attention to Grand Theft Auto IV, another great game with a physics engine just begging to be glitched out beyond recognition. Carefully cut and edited, this is an outstanding compilation. Considering what HelixSnake was able to manipulate in Skate 3, it's no surprise that Grand Theft Auto IV's open world has much more potential. We want more. Having spent the majority of BioShock Infinite hiding behind walls or throwing things at you, you'd be forgiven for thinking Elizabeth was the peaceful type, only driven to acts of violence when absolutely necessary. Nope. Once she opens up a tear and winds up in 21st-century Liberty City, all bets are off. She's a lunatic. GTA 4 Mod - Bioshock Infinite Elizabeth [YouTube]

Some narcissists are bad. Not all of them, though! Some narcissists are amazing. Take Ahmed Angel. Recently in the West, Angel's images have started to appear on forums and on websites. This weekend, Japan discovered him. There are those who are being mean to Angel—which isn't cool! How can you be mean to anyone with incredible photos like this? Love it! Angel's Facebook page has several hundred photos of his own face—and that's it. Some of the images are proper portraits, while others use online photo editors like PhotoFunia, PhotoFaceFun, and PicJoke, which takes you to PicJoke.net, an online photo editor with "fun photo effects, photo frames, nice collages and realistic photomontages." There are also images done by Digital Almasra Photo Service, whatever that is. Ahemd seems to have a following online—which, no doubt, will get larger. Good for him! It's not entirely clear if this is "for real" or even if Ahmed is (maybe he's a digital person); however, many of the images have been online for well over a year, and Angel continues to upload new ones. The photos are narcissistic, sure, but also interesting and unlike anything I've seen. Ever. Kotaku has reached out to Ahmed about his pics and will update this post should he comment. #cars I have to say, while I enjoyed watching Woody from Toy Story wreaking havoc in Liberty City, I didn't really think I'd like watching Mater from Cars do the same. Oh how far we’ve come. Back in 2011 – which I still struggle to believe was more than one year ago, or one day, or not tomorrow – we posted about a marvelous-looking GTA IV mod that turned Niko into Iron Man. Or rather, Iron Man if he were only slightly better at flying than one of the firetrucks he’s apparently wearing and barely capable of going toe-to-toe with the starvingest of hobos. Happily, however, time’s been shockingly good to Rockstar’s ubiquitous opus, and the Iron Man mod‘s no exception. In short, this is what I want the next official Iron Man game to be like. Well, you know, aside from the whole “extremely out-of-character senseless homicidal rampage” thing.

For every Rockstar game since Vice City, the promotional screenshots have been rendered on a PC that only God herself could own, post-processed by a version of Photoshop from the 24th century and employed camera angles that you could only play the game from for 2.7 seconds before driving into a wall. It’s oddly reassuring to see that rich tradition continues with the latest round of screenshots from the little-shown Grand Theft Auto 5. Click for embiggenation of all of these.
