A portion of a Kotaku interview with Eiji Aonuma...

Kotaku: What Nintendo franchise would you want to tackle next?

Aonuma: It wouldn’t be Mario because I’m not any good at that type of jumping game.

Kotaku: There are different reflexes involved there. What about Pikmin? There’s some similarities there. There’s a lot of exploration and a focus on figuring out the gameworld.

Aonuma: When I look at Pikmin, I feel like it’s something that kind of comes out of a lot of the ideas for Zelda. I think that is what happened with in Mr. Miyamoto’s head. If I made a Pikmin game it might turn into a Zelda game. Zelda is the main thing I’m really interested in.

We posted this earlier today, but an interesting point was brought up...

So, what happened to the Nintendo Network logo? Or is this just a placeholder? pic.twitter.com/yE2iGX0dFS

— Jose Otero (@jose_otero) October 21, 2013

We never did learn about online features for the game. Was the original boxart with the logo just a mistake?

Coming from a VG247 interview...

“We can confirm that cross-platform functionality is possible in certain titles that play on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, as well as other video game systems not made by Nintendo. We are committed to helping developers realise the full potential of their software on Nintendo systems. We can confirm that Disney Infinity from Disney Interactive Studios, Cubeman 2 from Three Sprockets and Pure Chess from Ripstone, all have the ability to play on Nintendo systems while at the same time communicating with consumers using those same games on other systems. Additional games using this functionality are in development."

Coming from an OXM interview with executive producer Mark Rubin...

“Regardless of platform – people’s gaming habits aren’t going to change just because there’s a new platform. We have an enormous amount of players who are more in the casual game space, but they play a lot. It’s kind of a weird, ironic thing to say; They aren’t hardcore gamers, or even gamers, but they play Call of Duty every night. And those guys are going to continue to play regardless of platform. So I think not only will we continue to engage with that existing player base, but we’ll take next gen and see how far we can go with it.”

Coming from an MCVUK interview...

“It is becoming a much broader church now, and it’s a testament to the size of the [toys-to-life] category we have created with Skylanders. It is now much more than a game. Without doubt this will be our strongest Skylanders launch ever. The support we have had from our retail partners this year has excelled. What you will see at launch is that we have some really stunning in-store activity taking place. We have got everything that we would have liked from an in-store perspective, we have very impactful interactive, in-store displays so that children can touch and feel the products before they buy it.

We have got the largest distribution footprint that we have ever, ever had for the game. We are branching outside of what we would call traditional games outlets, into toy specialists too. We are really excited. If you look at many similar industries – or non-similar industries – when a new category is created, one of the testaments to that category is when competitors move in, because they see the size, scale and opportunity of it. That is what you are seeing with Skylanders.” - Activision UK managing director Roy Stackhouse

A portion of a NE interview with VD-Dev co-founder Fernando Velez...

NE: Can you speak about some of the technical specs behind IronFall? We’ve been hearing some rumblings that 60 frames-per-second is targeted, as an example.

FV: 60 frames per seconds is our goal. Shooters offer better playing experience with this frame rate. With the engine we can reach 60 frames per second with and without stereoscopic view.

But if frame rate drops we don’t want to sacrifice the amount of IA, and graphics we have on screens, just because of the stereoscopic view (sometime we have to draw 3 screens, 1 for the left eye, 1 for the right eye, and 1 for the bottom screen where action will also take place sometimes. So maybe we will add a feature that allows in REAL TIME, the player to switch from 60 FPS with the 3D slider pushed down, or 30 FPS with 3D slider pushed up (no need to go to some menu).

NE: Does IronFall run on its own unique engine? If so, can you discuss some of its capabilities?

FV: The engine used in Iron Fall is called the ‘Big Bang Engine’. Its an engine we have programmed from scratch and is optimized for the Nintendo 3DS. It took us several months to write (days and nights), and is written fully in assembly code, using all the ARM optimizations we know. We also have written our own graphics driver for communication with the 3DS GPU to get the best of the handled graphics processor (well at least we hope) . The engine has many features, more on this will be shown on a video available on the 28 October.

NE: Assuming IronFall is successful, would you like to turn it into a series with additional releases on the eShop?

FV: If IronFall is successful we want to listen what players like or don’t like about the game, and if they want more we could realize their wish.

Monday 21 October, 2013 - The world’s premier games festival, Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), will return to Melbourne in 2014 after a critically successful sold out inaugural year in 2013. Community demand will see the show move to the larger Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, to be held from 31 October to 2 November 2014.

Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher announced the highly anticipated return of PAX Australia to Melbourne and said it was a boost for Victoria’s flourishing games industry.

“PAX is the world’s leading games festival and the return of PAX Australia to Melbourne for the second consecutive year highlights Victoria’s reputation as a key hub for games development in the Asia Pacific region,” Ms Asher said.

“This year’s event in Melbourne represented the first time that PAX had been held outside of the United States – not only was it a great coup for Melbourne but the event was a runaway success.”

The 2013 show completely sold out of tickets months before the event itself, as a result, PAX Australia 2014 will move to the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre in order to increase its capacity.

Ms Asher said the Victorian Coalition Government is a major sponsor of the event and played an important role in securing PAX Australia 2013 and 2014 for Victoria.

“PAX Australia is a fantastic opportunity to show off the breadth and diversity of Victoria’s games development community,” Ms Asher said.

PAX Australia 2014 will build on the success of the 2013 event and will combine exciting international and local content with community events. International guests, speakers, musicians and developers will join local game industry representatives to showcase games and community events in Australia. PAX Australia is also supported by the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association and the Game Developers Association of Australia.

Robert Khoo, President of Penny Arcade said Melbourne has been an incredible home for PAX, and the Victorian Government has been as accommodating as the fans.

“Not only have they helped us secure a much-needed larger venue for the show, but they’ve paved the way for talented local creators to be showcased on the global stage. The games community here is incredible, and PAX Australia is here to stay,” Mr Khoo said.

PAX Australia will be held at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre from 31 October and 2 November, 2014 and will be run by ReedPOP in conjunction with Penny Arcade.
