Coming from a Mashable interview with Miyamoto, Koizumi and Motokura...

On new hardware influencing Mario and blending 2D with 3D

"Every time we had a new hardware generation, the first thing that I would think about was, 'What would this do for a Mario game?' At the same time you really have to think about, 'What is the experience of someone who is playing a game like this for the first time?' At the same time you really have to think about, 'What is the experience of someone who is playing a game like this for the first time?' There are new and younger generations each time and we have to think about what their entry point into this series or universe or might be. So that's why, instead of only chasing down new technological ideas, we're also thinking about how to make it easy to play for all sorts of different people. You'll have, with each new game, advanced players looking for all the strategies of how to get through a level, as well as new players who are looking for a more comfortable play experience. The challenge before us is to make games that suit all of their needs." - Miyamoto
"We came up with a list of lots of fun ideas and allowed that to drive the way we were designing gameplay. We talked about all these different ideas in the ways players experience them, what do people find to be fun, what do people consider to be cute." - Motokura
"The joy of the 3D Mario game comes from the freedom to move any direction and enjoying lots of types of actions, but I thought the addition of this cat functionality might attract new people who are interested in new types of play styles." - Yoshiaki Koizumi

The full interview features comments that I've covered in my own feature, including talk of Miyamoto's opinion on Mickey Mouse and the focus on local multiplayer.

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with KinifiGames founder Chris Figueroa and level designer Alex Rhofer...

NL: Has work on the Wii U version begun, and if so how are you finding the development process on the Wii U?

CF: Development has been super smooth. I hope I didn't just jinx myself by saying that! I think one of the main reasons development has been so smooth is because I worked at Activision and did QA for all 1st party consoles. I know from the start what not to do and what to do.

Alexander Hofer: Having worked with the Wii U in the past, I'd agree development is going super smooth. Nintendo has gone to great lengths in making development as easy as possible for indie developers.

NL: You mention GamePad features in your promotional material, can you expand on how you'll be utilising the controller?

CF: In Imagine Me you will be discovering rooms in a dungeon. The GamePad will be used for your map so you can always have it displayed. You'll need it when you start to get down deeper!

NL: Is there a target release window at the moment?

CF: February is our date with Nintendo. The PC version will be larger so it may take longer. I want to have give the community more control over the game.

Don't take the Amazon listing as official just yet, but it looks like Europe is going to get the Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi - Limited Collector's Edition in retail form. We knew the eShop version was on the way, but it's nice to see the retail option possibly seeing release as well. Thanks to DerFux for the heads up!

Coming from a Venturebeat interview with Miyamoto, Koizumi and Motokura...

On the importance of the 'world' name

“When we were coming up with the name for this game, Super Mario 3D World, the word ‘world’ had a particularly important meaning to me. So you guys may remember that after the original Super Mario Bros. game, there was also Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3. But it was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System title, Super Mario World, that first used this word. [Since then, the New Super Mario Bros. series has inherited the 2D side-scrolling gameplay.]

And then separate from that was the 3D Mario games that started with Super Mario 64 and have continued to evolve all the way through Super Mario Galaxy 2. [We made another little departure with] Super Mario 3D Land, where we tried to combine elements of those two series: the side-scroller and the 3D.

And so it was taking those ideas from Super Mario 3D Land and raising them to the highest level imaginable that we came up with Super Mario 3D World,” Miyamoto said. “The change in title from ‘Land’ to ‘World’ was very significant for me. Now the inclusion of ’3D’ here of course [means] that it’s still a 3D world — not that it’s a stereoscopic view like on the 3DS, which I guess is a little funny for some people who get tripped up on it.” - Miyamoto

On moving to HD

“Now that we’re able to have graphics in HD, this is allowing us to express some different ideas that we really haven’t done before. So for example, the clear pipe is something that’s just that much easier to see in this kind of presentation, and this allowed us to connect it to new ideas for gameplay. We had a lot of fun thinking about what happens exactly inside the pipe if you could see through it. What sort of things are able to go through? And so we worked on, ‘OK, maybe fireballs can go through. Maybe even Goombas could go through.’ We spent a lot of time coming up with different variations.” - Motokura

The goal of appeal

“The goal for us is to appeal to people who’re familiar with, and fans of, both types of gameplay. So 2D players can run straight for the goal pole, and this might be familiar and comfortable and fun for them. But we’ve also incorporated all sorts of different things to appeal to fans of the 3D series and even the chance to allow some crossover between those two. … When we were thinking about it, we were aiming for something that’s a little luxurious. It’s kind of like the best of both worlds.” - Koizumi

The future of Mario

“We did not set out trying to define the future of Mario action games with this title. Rather, we’re just trying to find some fun new elements that we could incorporate. I certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility of us creating more games in the vein of Super Mario Galaxy. What we’re trying to accomplish here is just to create a really good entry point for new players into the Super Mario 3D games.” - Miyamoto

On recording the 'Meow' sound effect

“Of course, everyone the world over likes cats. But one thing that was kind of interesting to me was that because we recorded voice for this game in the United States, it had a slightly different meow from what I was expecting. In Japan, we say ‘meow!’ [in a high-pitched voice], but in the U.S., you guys say ‘meow!’ [in a lower intonation]. So that was kind of interesting to see.” - Miyamoto

Coming from a Kotaku interview...

"The joy of a 3D Mario game for me is really that you’re able to move freely in any direction and use lots of different fun actions while exploring a world. The joy of a 2D Mario game for me is that anyone can play these games and have a good time, even if it’s their first time playing a game. There’s a certain kind of simplicity to the concept of simply proceeding in one direction and reaching the goal.

The first time I think that we brought all of these disparate elements from these two different series together was in Super Mario 3D Land. But in the case of Super Mario 3D World, I think that we’ve found a way to evolve further in incorporating all of these elements, or have reached another goal, if you will.

Now that’s not to say that we may not make more games in the vein of Super Mario Galaxy in the future. I’d certainly like to consider that possibility. But our goal right now is to expose as many people as possible to this type of gameplay in a 3D world. And I think what we’ve come up with here is the most balanced system in which to do this.

If you think about this game only in terms of the number of courses it has, which is similar to previous games, you’re gonna miss out on the fact that there’s so many new ideas and surprises contained within. Whether it’s the ability to have multiplayer with your friends and family nearby, or how much fun you can have trying all sorts of different characters and the different ways that they can get through the levels and surprises within."
