HAMBURG, 10/16/2013. Gaming clothes label musterbrand has announced it is partnering with Ubisoft, a leading worldwide producer, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment products, to release an apparel and accessories collection based on video game Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. The officially licensed collection is now available through musterbrand.com.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag tells the story of Edward Kenway, a young British man with a thirst for danger and adventure, who falls from privateering for the Royal Navy into piracy as the war between the major Empires comes to an end. Set at the dawn of the 18th Century, the game features some of the most infamous pirates in history, such as Blackbeard and Charles Vane, and takes players on a journey throughout the West Indies during a turbulent and violent period of time later to become known as the Golden Age of Pirates. Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag features a vast open world with more than 50 navigable locations. Combat combines the weaponry of the Assassin’s Order with armaments of the era, and rewards both daring and stealth.

The Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag apparel line encompasses coats, hoodies, longsleeve shirts, scarves and bags. Like all musterbrand garb, the clothes are crafted in close cooperation between game designers and fashion creators. This durable line of street wear recreates the spirit of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag in style, texture and detail – without just copying costumes from the game. Each item exemplifies the feel and flavor of the Assassin’s Creed universe. Featuring subtle and overt connections to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, the collection has something for every Assassin’s Creed fan.

One especially ingenious result of the close collaboration between Ubisoft and musterbrand is the button concept: Every button can be taken off easily and exchanged with new buttons bearing various motifs from the franchise. Thus becoming a key style element and means of customization. New button designs will be released over time reflecting the evolution of the Assassin’s Creed brand. This is but one example of the fashion line’s ambitious direction.

The Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag apparel and accessories line goes beyond merchandise in the realm of gaming culture by taking the spirit of a game and putting it into a modern urban context. This is a collection of sturdy clothes meant to be worn every day. The items are of high quality yet remain affordable, ranging from €49 to €219.

“Musterbrand has done a great job again this year at producing stylish, wearable clothing inspired by Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. I can truly say that the threads express what the Assassin’s Creed franchise is all about: freedom, agility and a sense of adventure,” commented Jean Guesdon, creative director on Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag will be released from October 29, 2013 in North America and on October 31st across EMEA.

A portion of a NWR review...

I’m sure that this will be a regular attendee at many parties, and perhaps that’s the kind of environment Ubisoft had in mind when they crafted it. But, facts are facts, and the facts are that Just Dance 2014 is a very pretty frontend tacked on to a glorified dance video.

Coming from a SEGA-16 interview with Mac Senour, former SEGA producer...

12 people looked at it and passed before it got to me. If I didn’t pick it up, he was going to be rejected. I played it for five minutes, maybe less, and threw the controller on the floor and said “this is game of the year.” Every one in earshot laughed.

The reason was made very clear to me. Gunstar had small characters. We had just published, or were about to publish, World Series Baseball with a HUGE batter. All the games were showing off something the developers of Spider-Man had discovered, a way to make double high sprites. Gunstar didn’t use this and so the others passed. I saw it as something different. I have to say I made only one real change: there’s a boss in a military uniform, and in the original version he was Hitler. I asked them to remove the mustache or change the character.

That “throw the controller on the floor” bit has become a habit. To the point that at MTV my bosses used to ask me if it was a throw-down game. There is no secret formula to a great game. I usually say I look for something old and something new and a great mix of both. ...I was the last guy; if I said no then it would have been canceled. They spoke no English, so I had to go through my contact at SOJ, Henry Geison. Henry and I became friends when I was developer tech support.

The following comes from a Famitsu interview with Sega’s third CS Research and Development producer, Yosuke Okunari.

“I started (remakes) with Dragon Force of the Sega Ages 2500 series that was released on August of 2005. This series features remade titles from the past, but Virtua Fighter 2’s faithful remake that was released in 2004, was very well received. From that, I was able to understand what it takes to make such a faithful remake, and it’s something I’ve put a lot of importance in, since I’ve started working on the series. So, we developed the Space Harrier Complete Collection, an entire compilation of the series, to go with the various generations of our customers.

For the Virtual Console, the concept was to recreate the games exactly the way they were originally made. Sega Ages Online presented new rules and functions, which brought a fresh new take on the way they’re played. However, the ‘3D Reproduction Project’ required further measures. That’s where we added a remake version exclusive ‘HAYA OH’ boss to 3D Space Harrier.

We wanted to go after a stereoscopic vision that was unimaginable. For Sonic from the Sega Genesis, not only did we make it into 3D, but we also added the Spin Dash, which I believe made it easier to play. For 3D Galaxy Force II, the 3D added more depth to the screen, making it less common to get lost on the route. The things staff members wanted to express in the past but couldn’t, are now possible with today’s technology. And we’d like to share that joy. For our next lineup, it will depend on all of your voices, so please continue to support us.”

A portion of a Polygon review...

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies treads familiar territory, but laying out a complex case and discovering the truth is still exciting. A handful of new elements make it a rewarding addition to the Ace Attorney franchise, but they aren't the real draw of the series. I'm here for Phoenix and friends. Unpacking the twist-heavy storyline is its own reward.
