If Swapnote really did appear on the NES, it would have the same amount of online functionality as the 3DS one does now!

Ah, remember when this was a big deal? Somehow, some way, the IGN logo made it into the official Okami boxart on the Wii. Certainly an oversight by Capcom, but developer Ready at Dawn doesn't have any idea how it came about.

Coming from Ready at Dawn's CEO Ru Weerasuriya...

Honestly, it was a shock even to us. I was just like ‘what is that’? It didn’t seem like like a decision that was like a big decision taken by a lot of people. It almost felt like somebody, somewhere, decided to do something and we were just like, ‘huh, I don’t think anybody agreed to this.’

I mean I don’t know, I don’t know what it was because we never got to the bottom of it. I just saw it, and I was just like ‘I don’t want to know.’ Honestly, I didn’t pursue it any further. I was just like, ‘we’re done with that game, I don’t really know if we want to ask’ and that was that.

On an interesting side note, Weerasuriya says that the deal for Okami's Wii port was made when a few beers were shared between Weerasuriya and Capcom's VP at the time.

Mario and Sonic 2014 feels like a minor progression, and not the huge leap you might be expecting. Taking a lot of its cues from the 2010 game, and ignoring the rapid-fire party experience of 2012, this latest edition hits some of the right buttons, but they’re the same unremarkable buttons that were hit four years ago.

1985’s Super Mario Bros. may actually be the single most influential video game ever—certainly it rivals Pac-Man, Tetris, Doom, and Space Invaders in terms of importance. In any case, it has exerted tremendous influence over any game revolving around jumping, both 2D and 3D, which makes for an awful lot of descendants. For many of the games slated for exploration on the Anatomy list, most of which have their origins in the late ‘80s and in Mario’s wake, understanding the basics of Super Mario would seem as important as learning to read before trying to write a novel.

We're hearing reports from a Pokemon event with Junichi Masuda concerning the amount of Pokemon exchanged in Pokemon X/Y. While we don't have footage of the event just yet, we're hearing that Mr. Masuda confirmed that over 10 million Pokemon have been exchanged between players. We'll try to get confirmation of this statement.

A fascinating offshoot of the Castlevania series, Super Castlevania IV doesn't hold up quite as well as certain other early Super NES games. But it's a load of fun, and frankly it's worth playing just to soak up its moody masterpiece of a soundtrack.

Remember when we reported on Assassin’s Creed: Rising Phoenix awhile back? Ubisoft said it was completely untrue, so the discussion went cold. Now one gamer out there has managed to track down the same logo hidden within Assassin's Creed IV.

After sequence 6, I explored the level 2 security areas in the Abstergo Entertainment offices when I came across a sticker placed in a corner that had “Assassin’s Creed: Rising Phoenix” printed on it, stylized exactly as the featured image above. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Coming from an MCV interview...

"The project was actually named 'MOH killer' until an official name could be found. We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful. We were just going to make a great game, and do the things better than we did on previous projects. The great thing is that a team learns from previous projects." - former Infinity Ward artist Justin Thomas

Well, I think it's safe to say that Infinity Ward/Activision achieved that goal!

The following information comes from a GameKult interview with Miyamoto, Motokura and Koizumi. PLEASE note that this information comes from Google Translate, so the information within may not be spot-on.

On why Peach is playable...

Miyamoto: I think there are many players who want to play as Peach, but I think there was also a lot of players who wanted ( laughs ). Obviously, it was present in other titles like Mario Kart but she had to return one day in a Mario focused on 3D platform. In New Super Mario Bros.. Wii, the multiplayer aspect was already present but needed the capabilities of characters are identical to promote competition and not to unbalance the fighting. Reintegration Peach was one of our primary goals and we really started Super Mario 3D World a some times we could do something interesting with her and the other characters. Although four players to choose from and multiple ways to finish a level just part of this episode, we did not constantly Super Mario Bros. 2 because we also wanted to focus on gameplay closer the rest of the series.

On this game not taking place in a dream, as Super Mario Bros. 2 did.

Motokura: The dream is not what we had in mind when creating this game The pitch is Mario, Peach and friends who will rescue the fairies captured by Bowser.

On Super Mario Galaxy online tests

Koizumi: At the time of Super Mario Galaxy, we conducted tests for the online game and we have technical expertise to implement. However, we chose to focus on a user-friendly experience in the same room.

On keeping Mario developed internally

Koizumi: Well, this is my personal opinion but I think that with all the experience accumulated by the teams of Mario or Zelda, it would be difficult to fully leave a key episode of the series to external studios. However, as we have found ways to collaborate on projects with other companies, it would probably be possible to do the same thing with Mario finding a truly talented and motivated team.

On EAD Tokyo moving on to a new project

Koizumi: I can not tell if it's a Mario game, but I can confirm that it works well on a new project.

Aonuma said:

“We are planning on using things like the Wii U GamePad user interface, how you can use the map like a GPS and the intuitive aiming using motion controls in the next Zelda game too. I’d also like to be able to bring the experience of being able to explore the Great Sea however you want to locations other than the sea.”

Aonuma also discussed how working on Zelda Wii U and Wind Waker HD at the same time helped both projects out.

“I cannot talk of this in detail, but we frequently find solutions to a problem in one title when working on another. When you focus too much on one title, you are prone to take a very narrow minded approach and I guess you could say working on other titles widens your perspective.

The sense of a job well done I get as a result of all these efforts makes me truly happy. Also, when you are working on a number of titles at once you can share information about what works well or badly between the teams. This helps improve the quality of each of the games so there are lots of good things about working like this. The downside is that even when work on one game is over there is still another one there, so I never get a break. My family isn’t so pleased about that. It’s quite a challenge trying to keep them happy.”
