A portion of a CVG review...

A woefully undercooked and uninspired party game that's actually worse than its predecessors.

+ Looks bright and colourful
+ Some of the unlockables are fun

- Creatively vapid
- Stagnant character roster
- Tiny event count

Prepare to set foot on the magical soil of Hyrule once more when The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds launches on 22nd November for the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles. As a follow-up to the 1991 Super NES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, get ready to conquer new dungeons, fresh puzzles, and experience new gameplay mechanics which open up the way Link explores Hyrule and the foreign land of Lorule, a corrupted, parallel version of Hyrule.

The story begins in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds with an ominous threat looming over Hyrule. A mysterious, wizardly figure named Yuga has been appearing throughout the land, transforming the kingdom’s seven sages into paintings and spiriting them away into another world. With the future of Hyrule at stake, Link must therefore step into the unknown realm of Lorule and stop Yuga’s nefarious plans in order to restore peace and harmony to his home world.

During a journey of discovery in both Hyrule and Lorule, Link will meet characters familiar to fans of The Legend of Zelda series, such as Princess Zelda and the elder of Kakariko Village, Sahasrahla, as well as new figures central to the storyline such as the travelling merchant Ravio, and the mystical figure of Hilda, the Princess of Lorule. Appearing for the first time in the series, little is known about Ravio, the item vendor who sets up shop in Link’s house and provides our hero with a helpful bracelet... Via Ravio’s shop, players can now choose to buy or rent key items early on in the adventure, allowing greater freedom to explore dungeons in any order over the course of the game. Whether it’s freezing foes in their tracks with the Ice Rod, or floating upwards with the Tornado Rod, many items will be pivotal to progressing through the fiendishly designed dungeons players will encounter.

Thanks to Ravio’s bracelet, Link is able to transform into a drawing and walk along walls, and this ability brings a new dimension to the table when solving puzzles, as by merging with walls, players can see obstacles from different angles and are able to discover new features. But beware – Link can only merge with walls for a limited amount of time, so ensure that once the energy gauge is depleted, he is not in any imminent danger!

For those exploring the detailed worlds of Hyrule and Lorule, a variety of subquests and minigames are on hand to earn rewards in the form of rupees or extra heart containers. Treacherous Tower involves Link fighting his way through numerous floors filled with a variety of enemies via three difficulty levels, while Octoball Derby sees Link step up to bat in a baseball-inspired minigame situated in Lorule where rupees are earned by smashing pots and knocking over enemies littering the field. For those who can’t put down this latest title in The Legend of Zelda series, once a player has completed the main game, a Hero Mode will be unlocked, in which Link takes greater damage from enemies when hit. Intrepid explorers may even find a small hidden extra waiting to be found somewhere in Lorule during a second play through...

Thwart the evil Yuga and restore peace and harmony to Hyrule when The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds releases on 22nd November for the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles. For all Zelda fans wanting to show off their allegiance to the Triforce, don’t forget that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Limited Edition Nintendo 3DS XL console also arrives on the same day, including a download code to purchase the game directly from Nintendo eShop, and emblazoned with a double Triforce design across the console’s shell. Finally, as first revealed by the game’s producer Eiji Aonuma during a recent visit to Europe, if fans pre-order the game before 22nd November they can also get their hands on an exclusive Legend of Zelda treasure chest – the ideal item to keep your copy of the game safe!

Isn't it cool that Nintendo has made the ability to take screenshots possible in some games? You know what's even better than that? One hacker has made his own custom firmware that lets him take screenshots at any time, in any game. He can even take screens on the system menu. Too bad he hasn't released this hack yet...but now we get to ask Nintendo why this isn't part of their own firmware update offerings!

Coming from a Eurogamer interview with Miyamoto

On SM3DW's invisible pipes

Miyamoto: "One of our younger development staff told me that they wanted to know what went on when Mario entered a pipe. They were curious as you could never see what was going on in there."

To show off how he wanted Mario to move in the cat suit, Miyamoto would get down on all fours and crawl around the room to mimic the movements he had in mind.

On Mario's climbing ability in the cat suit

Miyamoto: "Super Mario is fundamentally a game about jumping. The ability for the player to climb seems to challenge the core [of the series]. But I think we've found a way to implement that doesn't cause harm."

On the development process

Miyamoto: "It was a very stressful time. We're relieved that we were able to finish everything, but also we very much enjoyed developing the game."

On the importance of Super Mario 64

Miyamoto: "Super Mario 64 was a key turning point in the history of Super Mari. It was a good game but we were not quite able to achieve something that was both fun and easy for both beginners and advanced players. But with Super Mario 3D Land we found the spirit of the original games which were easy for beginners but allowed for advanced play all within the 3D environment."

On the importance of the cat suit

Koizumi: "The cat costume is the key to this game. It makes it easier for beginners to make it through levels and get to the goal posts. But advanced players can use the transformation to perform acrobatic moves and impossible feats. For example, you can perform horizontal jumps from one wall to the other - a new feature that advanced players will enjoy."

Miyamoto: "Super Mario is fundamentally a game about jumping. So this addition might seem strange: the ability for the player to climb seems to challenge the core [of the series]. But I think we've found a way to implement that doesn't cause harm."

On empathy

Motokura: "When Miyamoto and Koizumi were working on Super Mario Galaxy 2 we discussed the topic of empathy. I think in the design of the characters we aimed for achieving this empathy. When it comes to Peach, I think many players will want to play as her; but I don't think that's gender specific. Remember, we've had her as a playable character in Super Mario Kart for a while now. Players can choose type that best fits their playing style and it's also fun to play same course with different characters to see how it plays differently."

Coming from producer Daniel Crenna...

“We are looking at options for additional funding if we think we need more fuel to ensure we meet our goals, and to self-fund additional platforms we didn’t hit in our stretch goals.”

Paris, France (November 4, 2013) - Celebrated French composer Olivier Deriviere (Remember Me, Alone In The Dark) has created a unique musical score for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry, the latest chapter in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure open world video game series. Set in the Caribbean at the dawn of the 18th Century, Freedom Cry is a stand-alone story about Adéwalé, a former slave-turned-assassin who attempts to save his enslaved people in Haiti. To immerse players in the game, Deriviere's sweeping emotional score features performances by a world-class symphony orchestra as well as live drums, a cappella soloists and choir performed in the tradition of Afro-Haitian ancestral music. The Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry Original Soundtrack will be available for digital download on iTunes and other digital music sites to precede the release of the game.

Composer Olivier Deriviere recorded his original score for Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag - Freedom Cry with the The Brussels Philharmonic (The Artist) and La Troupe Makandal, the internationally acclaimed ensemble dedicated to traditional Haitian music and dance. The troupe's distinctive drumming and vocals were recorded at Avatar Studios in New York with multiple Grammy® award-winning engineer Silas Brown. Driven by his passion to provide players with a unique musical experience that truly reflects the game, both musically and historically, Deriviere blends the orchestra with traditional Afro-Haitian musical elements to deliver an authentic score that reflects the Afro-Haitian struggle for freedom as told through Adéwalé's story. Preview samples of the score are available at SoundCloud.

Classically trained multimedia composer Olivier Deriviere has scored numerous animation, film and video game soundtracks including the widely acclaimed interactive scores for Remember Me, Alone In The Dark, Of Orcs and Men and the Obscure video game series. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music (Jazz and Film Scoring) and the National Conservatory in Nice, France (Composition and Orchestration), Deriviere has recorded with the GRAMMY® award-winning choir The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices, Philharmonia Orchestra, The Boston Cello Quartet, The Boston String Quartet, The Children Choir of the National Opera of Paris. His music has also been performed by the Cannes Symphony Orchestra, Monte Carlo String Quartet, and Utrecht Metropolitan Orchestra and Choir.

Born a slave, Adéwalé found freedom as a pirate aboard the Jackdaw where he became Edward Kenway's second-in-command. Now, 15 years later, Adéwalé has become a trained Assassin who finds himself shipwrecked in Saint-Domingue without weapons or crew. He starts to meet locals in an effort to assemble a crew and steal a ship. The more he helps, however, the more he is drawn into the Maroon slave community. Forced to face his past, Adéwalé sets out to free the slaves and bring death to their captors.

Uh-oh, be on the lookout for some shady activity when using Pokemon X/Y's Wonder Trade feature. Here's some bad news from people much more familiar with the service than I.

...When people try to trade hacked Pokémon, they appear as bad eggs in the recipient’s game. These bad eggs cannot be released or traded away; they will keep multiplying until all of your boxes are filled. But, it gets worse. They will also delete your existing Pokémon and replace them with bad eggs. “Trade at your own risk,” warns the post.

Let's hope Nintendo jumps in and takes care of this soon. I'd hate to think that millions could potentially have their games ruined because of a few...bad...eggs.

That's an even better deal than I realized. I thought it was 30 days after download and then you'd have to pony up some cash.

The following information comes from a NowGamer interview with Ubisoft Motreal User Research Project Manager, Jonathan Dankoff.

"We’re still in the early stages of collecting data, but already at this stage it’s impressive to see how closely the mission ratings mirror the results from our own pre-launch playtest sessions. The current favorite mission decided by our fans is Sequence 02 Memory 06: The Treasure Fleet, but I look forward to seeing how the data evolves as more people play!"

If you filed your claim by May 15th, you should soon be seeing a check arrive for some of your cash from the Madden monopoly settlement. This involves football titles that hit the GameCube and Wii, so hopefully you jumped on the opportunity when we first told you about it. Keep checking that mailbox!

EDMOND, Wash., Nov. 4, 2013 - The Wii console was a cultural phenomenon when it was released to the world in 2006. To continue this legacy and share the fun with as many people as possible, Nintendo is launching the Wii mini console in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of only $99.99. That is a tremendous value for families and people who have yet to join one of the most iconic and talked-about pop-culture trends of the last decade. Wii mini is a smaller, redesigned version of Wii that plays the entire library of more than 1,300 Wii games. The compact system is matte black with a red border, and comes with the Mario Kart Wii game, a red Wii Remote Plus controller and a red Nunchuk controller. While availability will differ somewhat according to location, shoppers can expect to see Wii mini in stores by the middle of November.

"Wii mini offers the same fun experience as Wii, which has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "And it comes packaged with Mario Kart Wii, a multiplayer Mario racing game that is one of the best-selling Wii games. At such a great price, it is an extraordinary value for shoppers this holiday season."

Wii is the best-selling system of this generation with more than 100 million units sold globally. Wii mini is for those who don't own a Wii console and want to enjoy a ton of great Wii games on a stylish system at an affordable price. It is also for families who want an additional console in another room, allowing siblings and friends to play while the rest of the family enjoys other entertainment and games on the main living room TV screen. While Wii mini is not compatible with the Internet and will not allow online functionality when playing games, select multiplayer games can still be played locally with friends and families, which is the ideal way to enjoy such entertaining games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

As a companion to the Wii mini system, a large collection of Nintendo Selects Wii games is available at a suggested retail price of only $19.99 each. These games include modern classics like Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario. In addition, three newly discounted Wii games - Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports Resort - are also available at a suggested retail price of $29.99 each. With an existing, extensive library of classic games available at such low prices, Wii mini demonstrates the value and variety Nintendo is offering this holiday season.
