The image is old, but I can't stop giggling, both at the absurdity of a harpoon to the chest and how Reddit has turned this Mortal Kombat musing into an ad for classic one-hit-kill fighter Bushido Blade. Read more...

A classic fighting game based on Dota 2 and its characters would be a really cool thing, right? Redditor Wykrhm played with this idea, inspired mostly by Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, and created the edit above. The Anti-Mage and Riki fit right in, but some characters, like Juggernaut, would be OP as hell under the given circumstances.Read more...

Yeah, the way that this video pays homage to the old-school digitized look of the first few Mortal Kombat games is cool. And it’s great that there are nods to signature moments of the latest MK title in there, too. But what really makes this video work is the secret revelation about thunder god Raiden. Read more...

One thing I can't help but admire about fighting games is how well the genre uses moves and kinetics for characterization: sure, not every game has a fantastic story attached to it, but that doesn't mean a fighting game can't have well-defined, unique characters, you know?Read more...

Everybody's favorite ninja-turned-skeleton-head-ghost-ninja (Mortal Kombat's Scorpion, obviously) will fight his way back from the grave and into the DC Universe this Tuesday, June 11, when he becomes the latest DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Scorpion's implementation in Injustice appears faithful to his incarnation in 2011's Mortal Kombat, though he won't play identically due to differences in Injustice's engine and gameplay mechanics. Ol' Scorps' toasty new threads were designed by legendary comic book artist Jim Lee, seen above talking design with NetherRealm's Ed Boon.

Scorpion will cost $5.

The success of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, not to mention all the SNK titles, spawned a crazy amount of abominations. Developers certainly took their inspiration in...interesting directions. Adding some really cool, unique Japanese arcade fighters, we already have a nice list of weird looking fighting games. Dark Edge Dark Edge was Sega's first attempt at 3D in a fighting game. They used a weird sprite scaling technique that created a semi-3D environment with 2D backgrounds. Waku Waku 7 Sunsoft's 1996 arcade fighter is a parody—with farting robots—of all the 2D fighters and its characters from the 90s. Puppet Show We control Chinese puppets in this arcade title from 1989, which also had surprisingly advanced graphics for an 80s game. ClayFighter 1993 SNES / Genesis fighter with ridiculous characters made of clay. Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game Capcom only had minor involvement in this 1995 adaptation of the 1994 movie adaptation of the Street Fighter games. I wonder why... Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport Barney? Is that you? Battle Construction Vehicles Wrecking balls and bulldozers ramming into each other. I'm pretty sure we can call Artdink's title from 2000 a weird one. Pit-Fighter With a 1990 release, Pit-Fighter preceded Mortal Kombat with its digitized live action footage. Dong Dong Never Die DDND is a 2009 parody from China, using digitized sprites, making fun of every major fighting game in a really weird way. Kasumi Ninja Released in 1994 for the Atari Jaguar, Kasumi Ninja didn't have many ninja, but this is the only game that has a badass Scottish blacksmith shooting fireballs. Ka Ge Ki A Taito arcade game from 1988, with characters that look more like headknocker figures than human beings. Cho Aniki: Bakuretsu Ranto Hen And then there's the Japanese series of Cho Aniki, featuring probably the weirdest characters and gameplay that you can find in fighting games. Make sure to leave your comment and show your favorite weirdo fighting game that's not on our list. sources: Tatsudoshi, Pikawil100, Vysethedetermined2, chonnygame, AndsyNF, McZakke, GLBrown, Arcade Museum, NickMarino
