This week's PlayStation Plus lineup has something in store for both longtime PlayStation 3 fans and PS4 die-hards, offering up Batman: Arkham City and the debuting console version of Mercenary Kings free of charge.

Mercenary Kings, developed by Wizorb creator Tribute Games, melds the run-and-gun gameplay of the arcade classic Metal Slug with an online cooperative multiplayer mode and an in-depth item-crafting component. Tomorrow's PlayStation 4 release marks the first time Mercenary Kings is available on a console platform, following up on its Steam Early Access debut last year.

Batman: Arkham City, originally released in 2011, finds the Dark Knight trapped in a walled-off section of Gotham City filled with classic villains and other miscreants. The downloadable PlayStation Plus version of Arkham City includes the Catwoman Bundle Pack, which adds a series of exclusive story missions and in-game collectibles.

Both games will be available for PlayStation Plus members in North America starting tomorrow. Other PS Plus games premiering in April include Castle of Illusion, Stealth Inc, and Velocity Ultra.

It’s time for cat cannons and batarangs! Starting tomorrow, PlayStation Plus members get Mercenary Kings on PS4 and Batman Arkham City on PS3. In Mercenary Kings, team up with your friends and take down an evil corporation called CLAW. Along the way, be sure to look out for crafting components so you can pull together new crazy weapons like the cat-cannon or fish sword.

Batman Arkham City is a critically acclaimed open-world title, netting a Metacritic score of 96. There are a lot of cool gadgets to use and lots of bad guys to beat down, all in the name of justice of course. A section of Gotham has been taken over by the criminally insane and it’s up to Bats to save the day.

This week for our Spring Fever sale you can pick up lots of Amazing Spider-Man content at a discount.

You can download Mercenary Kings and Batman Arkham City after PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, April 1st.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, Batman! Yes, that is the sound of Batman: Arkham City coming to PlayStation Plus in April for PlayStation 3 owners. Arkham City garnered praise from gamers and critics alike, as evidenced by its cumulative 96/100 score on Metacritic. With the recent announcement of Batman Arkham Knight, this is a great way to catch up on Batman’s adventures.

PlayStation 4 owners can join up with friends and take down an evil corporation in a new 2D action game, Mercenary Kings. As you explore the island CLAW (that’s the evil corporation) has taken over, you’ll discover weapon parts that you can take back to your base and use to fashion together some new spiffy gear.

There are two other PS3 games this month: Stealth Inc. A Clone In the Dark and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. Stealth Inc. is, as you can probably guess, a game where you should stick to the shadows. The only way to make it out of the lab alive is via some sneaky platforming, so proceed with caution. Castle of Illusion is a proper remake of the Sega Genesis version, not just an HD upgrade. There are new levels to navigate but the goal is the same — save your #1 mouse (that’s Minnie) from the evil witch.

While Vita owners can also enjoy Stealth Inc. (the benefits of Cross-Buy!) this month, they’ll also get Velocity Ultra, an arcade-y space shooter where you’ll teleport around and save other ships, and Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD, a classic tower-defense style game where you’ll need to save baby Tiki-people.

First there was Batman: Arkham Macguyver, then there was Batman: Arkham A Bit Of City, then Batman: Arkham Oranges, and now there is Batman: Arkham Nighty-Night. Oh, alright, just Arkham Knight. But I’m only calling it that this once.

And it has a driveable Batmobile! Jeez guys, why’d it take you four games to come up with that idea? But all jolly exciting – a car, and Rocksteady back at the helm, should mean a mite more sense of advancement than the solid but rinse’n'repeaty Arkham Oranges. (Though hopefully the returning dev has learned a thing or two about thug dialogue.) … [visit site to read more]

Batman's tool belt has always featured the most advanced gear on the planet, so it's always struck us as strange that the World's Greatest Detective would use Games For Windows Live as his PC platform. Today, Warner Bros. has announced that Batman has given up on the soon-to-be-shuttered Games for Windows Live platform in favor of Steam's collection of similar features and copy protection.

GFWL copy protection and features (including achievements) have been removed from both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. The upgraded Steam versions now include Steam Achievements, cloud support, Big Picture support, full controller support and Steam Trading Cards.

"If you purchased either of the games on Steam all you have to do is let Steam download the latest patch and you will be fine. If you purchased the games somewhere else you will need to enter the code in Steam," an announcement on Steam detailed. Steam users report a free upgrade to the GOTY editions of each title upon registering their CD key in Steam. Switching to a new copy protection system means that players will be forced to restart the game as saves rooted in the GFWL platform are not compatible with Steam.

This weekend, both Batman games are available for 75% off to celebrate The Dark Knight's upgrade to the industry's preferred PC platform.

Dammitall! Here we were, hoping the next Batman game would be a gloriously silly, super-colourful Silver Age tale, but instead it looks to be more grimdark Nolanism. I mean, that’s fine, but we’ve done it twice already. Don’t wear it out, as Michelle Pfeiffer once said about her name to Michael Keaton. ‘Tis not to be – Batman: Arkham Origins is the next game, Rocksteady are no longer at the helm and the calendar has rewound to Bruce Wayne in his youth. Despite my arrogant suppositions a couple of sentences ago, that’s all we really know and it could yet turn out to be anything. Doesn’t seem like they’re avoiding evoking the style and tone of the earlier Arkhams, mind, and they’ll also be using the same engine. It’s “current-gen” so that may mean we don’t get the shiniest of all possible shines, but more positively they’re hinting at depicting Gotham City as a “functional city”, not a mere puzzleplace.(more…)

Coming from Digital Foundry...

The overall takeaway is that the Wii U version of this classic title is unpolished and less enjoyable to play than Rocksteady's original. On top of the variable frame-rate, we were also disappointed to see the odd moment of more noticeable LOD popping and jerky FMV sequences suggesting that this version has some streaming issues.

Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment announced that Batman: Arkham City™ Armored Edition for the Wii U™ system from Nintendo will begin shipping to North American retailers today.
