I've seen prices you people wouldn't believe. [laughs] Circuit Cities on fire across the country. I watched people kill for $3 waffle irons on Black Friday. All those discounts will expire, like [cough] tears in rain. Time to save. The ghosts are real. Call of Duty: Ghosts is officially the next installment in the biggest franchise in gaming, and hitting all of your platforms current and future this November, or is it? The first pre-order bonuses and discounts for COD: Ghosts (Chosts?) have hit, and we're gonna break them down. Predictably the PC SKU is the first to have a true discount. Head on over to Gamefly to grab $7 in credit for pre-ordering. [Gamefly] The consoles deals are less direct. Basically you can lock up the game for regular price on Amazon and get some digital wallpapers in the process. But wait, don't scoff so quickly, remember Amazon has pre-order price guarantee. By pre-ordering you're guaranteed the lowest number Amazon hits before release. You can set it and forget it like that claymore at the top of the stairs. [PS3, 360, PC] Naturally, stick with Moneysaver every day for future Ghosts deals. If you need something more immediate, grab Bioshock: Infinite for $45 on consoles and $50 on PC in your respective sections. Ready to upgrade to a serious router? Remember The Denpa Men, that cute 3DS RPG that was sort of a cross between Dragon Quest and Pikmin? It must have done well in the U.S., because the sequel is coming here too. The Denpa Men 2 will be out on the 3DS eShop on May 30, thanks to the folks at localiztaion company Active Gaming Media. Looks pretty neat! This router is known colloquially as the "Dark Knight." Sold. If you're in the market for a new router, or think you should be, we're here to recommend the ASUS RT-N66U. For the average person, I'd recommend just grabbing an Apple Airport Express or Airport Extreme, setting up your network, and never thinking about it again. But if you're a power user, the ASUS is the way to go. It's the Wirecutter's favorite router, and highly-regarded on Amazon after over 400 reviews. Those three antennas are removable and upgradeable, and the router supports custom firmware. At $150 with today's deal, it even comes in cheaper than the Airport Extreme. [Amazon] If you feel 802.11ac is something you must have right now, the ASUS RT-AC66U has you covered for an additional $40. Need a new gaming mouse? We've got just the cheap ticket. Wish you had all those Star Wars and Star Trek blu-rays on your shelf? Here you go. Tech If you're looking for a gaming headset, this Turtle Beach is an awesome deal. I cried the first time I held a Nintendo 3DS. The experience was a revelation that I'll not soon forget, and even if everyone stopped making games for it tomorrow, my blue 3DS XL is not going anywhere. That little machine is a window into a part of human experience that most people take for granted, but which is otherwise inaccessible to me. 124 Millimeters of Depth I am mostly stereoblind. Stereoblindness is a blanket term for any condition that prevents a person from perceiving depth using binocular vision. Depending on whom you ask, it affects somewhere between 3 and 15 percent of the world's population, which creates an interesting demographic hurdle for the 3D television industry. Some people are stereoblind because their vision in one eye is severely impaired, others because their brains are unable to coalesce images from both eyes into a three-dimensional result. I'm very slightly cross-eyed. Not enough for anyone else to notice, but enough that my lines of sight intersect about 10-12 inches in front of my face and continue in divergent directions. Basically, I have double vision all the time. Childhood eye therapy and surgery (not LASIK—I had sutures on my left eyeball) helped a bit, but most of the time I just use one eye and ignore the other. Being stereoblind isn't that much of a handicap; I can't see Magic Eye images, and 3D movies are just 2D movies with lousy contrast, but that's about it. I say I'm "mostly" stereoblind because despite my eyes' poor grasp of trigonometry, the optical center of my brain seems to work just fine. I discovered this the first time I held a 3DS and played Pilotwings Resort. To be perfectly honest, I really didn't expect much from the console. But clever readers have already noticed that my sight lines meet at just the right distance for holding a 3DS. After playing with the depth slider off for a few minutes, I slid it up out of sheer curiosity and saw something I had never seen in my life: a third dimension. This is how other people see the world all the time. Not only was I "seeing into the screen" the way so many others feel when playing a 3DS for the first time, I was seeing in a direction that had previously been literally invisible to me. It's difficult to come up with a metaphor. Maybe it's what Gomez saw the first time he spun the world in Fez. Maybe you can remember the first time you lay on the grass at night, looked up at the stars, and realized you weren't looking up at all, because there is no "up", and you were suddenly aware of being attached to the surface of a tiny sphere rolling through a vast emptiness. Or perhaps you once looked at an Escher woodcut long enough for the positive and negative space to switch places. I suppose any analogy would be imperfect; I was seeing a new piece of everyday reality. As silly as it may seem to get an existential epiphany out of a $200 plastic gadget, the apparent solidity of the tiny simulacra on that screen made them seem almost more "real" than the world around me, which looked suddenly flat by comparison. It didn't matter that they had three-digit polygon counts and textures that must have topped out at 512x512. I had never before perceived things as having volume, only a sort of surface area in terms of how much of my vision they took up. It was intoxicating. It was a glimpse into something that I immediately realized was part of everyone else's normal experience. This is how other people see the world all the time. There's nothing magical about the perception of depth. I had never known it was possible for reality to look this way—for things to look as solid as they feel. Yet there I was, holding this little chunk of plastic and silicon in my hands, tears streaming down my face because I had never known it was possible for reality to look this way—for things to look as solid as they feel. I couldn't look away. I got a 3DS of my own the next day, and later replaced it with an XL. I revisited Hyrule in Ocarina of Time 3D, stopping and staring at every piece of architecture. I still spend more time running aimlessly through Super Mario 3D Land's gorgeous environments than I do trying to beat the game. Wouldn't anyone, if it were the only place where things had volume? Sometimes I despair. Sometimes it's hard to face the possibility of never being able to perceive mountains or forests or ancient ruins or modern cities or my parents or my fiancée with such depth as I can see Link opening a treasure chest inside an illuminated 4.88-inch rectangle. But ultimately, I'm incredibly lucky to have only this minor affliction to contend with. And in any case, it may even be possible to treat stereoblindness. Until then, I'm keeping my 3DS. Videogames and movies. It's the best of both worlds. Today is the day to finally pick up all those Star Wars and Star Trek blu-rays you want on your shelf but have never pulled the trigger on. All the films from both franchises are on sale, along with a nice pre-order deal for Next Generation: Season 3. You can even grab the Family Guy Star Wars Trilogy on deep discount. As for interactive entertainment, navigate to your respective section to grab Injustice for $35, plus a ton more. It's your last day to get Tomb Raider for $20 as well, so don't stall. Miss the big action game sale from EA? No you didn't, click here. The sales at GOG.com, Gamefly, and Square-Enix we highlighted yesterday are mostly still on, and they include some sweet deals on retros and indies. Check 'em out. It's hard to get more credible than "authentic refurbished Nintendo products" from Nintendo's official store. Nintendo of America is selling refurbished 3DS and DSi consoles, starting at $100 for Metallic Rose and Midnight Blue DSi XLs, and $130 for the 3DS in Aqua Blue and Midnight Purple.

Nintendo's blurb says its line represents "the only refurbished products in the market that have been cleaned, tested, and inspected to meet Nintendo's high standards." Well then. The portables have a one year warranty and are guaranteed to work, even if there are any "minor cosmetic blemishes."

Alas, Eurofriends, it seems this one's a NoA thing. "We currently have no plans and have made no announcements for this type of activity in Europe," Nintendo UK told Eurogamer.

Some might call it a used 3DS or DSi. Nintendo, however, is selling "authentic refurbished" models of the handheld—with a warranty—on its U.S. online store. Take that, GameStop! [via Siliconera]

Sunday is a good day to save money. Bonus: Grab Injustice: Gods Among Us for $35 from Toys R' Us. That's a full $25 less than anyone else is selling it for, and the deal applies to the PS3 and 360 versions as well as the Wii U version. $5 shipping. Here's the Kotaku review.• PS3 version• 360 version• Wii U version Last week Origin launched a huge action game sale, and then Green Man Gaming turned around and topped them on several of the games that were discounted. Now Square-Enix, GOG, and Gamefly are getting in to the act, but in this case with some decidedly retro, indie, and otherwise impulse price point titles. We'll pick a few of the best options from each sale. GOG.com [DRM-free] | 50% off regular price• Hotline Miami ($5)• La Mulana ($7.50)• Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy ($3)• Psychonauts ($5)• Oddworld Games ($3 each) Gamefly | Use code GFD20OFF• Sim City 4 Deluxe Edition [DRM-free] ($4)• Civilization 4 [PC/Mac] Square-Enix• Hitman: Absolution [Steam] ($7.50) | This beats both the Green Man Gaming and Origin sale prices. Professional Edition is $10.• Classic Hitman games are $2.50• Classic Thief games are $2.50• Classic Legacy of Kain games are $2.50• Classic Deux Ex Games are discounted. We've highlighted just a few good picks, but there's more to be found in all three sales so start digging. See you tomorrow at 2:15pm EST for the full Moneysaver roundup. One of the most endearing qualities of the fantastic Fire Emblem: Awakening is its massive cast of characters. Over the course of the game, we really came to know them as we fought alongisde them, watched them fall in love and get married, and sometimes watched them die. It's what sets Fire Emblem games apart from other SRPGs, and what made the game's final mission so epic. This excellent piece of fan art by Hasuyawn is just… I don't even know where to begin. I'll just turn it over to you. Using our image annotation system, find your favorite character, or tell us what you think is going on at this party. (Note: Our image embedder wouldn't let me fit the entire image at its regular dimensions, and I didn't want to smush it too much. Here's the full image with Hasuwayn's watermark, which you can also find on Hasuyawn's Deviantart page.) (Via John Ricciardi)

Get your games cheaply and watch them cheaply too. Welcome to The Moneysaver. NOTE: Green Man Gaming is currently down. Clearly the awesomeness of their sale was too much for their servers. Should be back up soon. Not content to be outdone by yesterday's huge action gaming sale from EA, Green Man Gaming has thrown down the gauntlet with huge discounts on PC titles, most notably Tomb Raider for $20, the lowest price we've seen on it. Hit up the PC section for all the deals, and don't forget to use code GMG20-GGN5D-FC3NA You're going to need a sweet HDTV to play all these new games on, and we've got just the thing. Amazon has the Toshiba 46" 120Hz 1080p LED HDTV for a mere $548, the lowest price it's been, and a fantastic deal on a screen of this size and quality. And it's...oh dear. Up top, a pair of Nintendo 3DS units, below, a PlayStation Vita. Sony's browser lets you access Nintendo's online version of the Miiverse. Nintendo's own does not. Predictable, perhaps, but still worth a chuckle. You can access Miiverse on PS Vita but not on 3DS [NeoGAF]

Nintendo is releasing a number of cool themed 3DSs—like this Luigi one, or the Animal Crossing one. Those real ones aren't nearly as awesome as these fake ones, though. Currently, the Game Boy themed 3DS mocked up by VG Box Art's Wenis doesn't exist. It should, though—that's one classic, minimalistic design that I'm sure people would drop money on if they could. And while the recently-released Pikachu 3DS is cute, it's not as sexy as this Pokémon 3DS—also designed by Wenis. Make it happen, Nintendo! (Via Tiny Cartridge)

Reddit user afwo3 spotted this gentleman hanging out at the Louvre in Paris. And while it looks like he's taking a photo, he's probably using the 3DS as an interactive tour guide, since that's a thing you can do at the gallery. Saw this old guy at the Louvre taking pictures with a 3DS! [Reddit]

We've already had some huge sales today in our morning Moneysaver PSA, and now we're bringing you some great pre-order discounts on highly-anticipated releases. Dig in. The best gaming deals not on Origin today are pre-order offers from Newegg and a few other retailers. Reserve Grid 2 on the 360 or PS3 to save $10, and Resident Evil Revelations to save $12, an offer that also applies to the Wii U version. Speaking of the Wii U, you can shave $10 off Game and Wario by committing early. 3DS owners can even take advantage with $7 off the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns. We've got your new gaming headset right here, your wallet won't even break a sweat. The Corsair Vengeance 1500 USB Dolby 7.1 Gaming Headset was the "biggest surprise" in Kotaku's gaming headset roundup, but the discount on it was today's biggest surprise. Grab it from Amazon today for $60 with free shipping- the lowest this headset has been, and the same price some people paid for a new copy of Aliens: Colonial Marines. It even looks good. [Amazon] If you're looking for non-gaming audio gear, check out our "Tech" section, where three great deals await you. Even 360 owners can listen in today with a nice offer on an Xbox gaming headset. If you're more interested in selling than buying, Amazon is giving $20 bonus credit on $20 or more worth of games, consoles, or accessories traded in. In the first three months of this year, Nintendo sold a mere 200,000 Wii U's in North America. Microsoft sold more Xbox 360's than that in March alone. But, uh, that's the good news? In Japan, since January, Nintendo sold 90,000 Wii U systems. And in the rest of the world? 110,000. These numbers come from Nintendo itself. The company announced their sales for their last financial year last night—their fiscal year ends at the end of March. (See them here; they're in a PDF.) Amid all the facts and figures there was some sobering proof that the $300-$350 Wii U, the first new console released by Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo since 2006 just isn't selling. Wii U had started decently last November and December, racking up a little more than three million consoles sold worldwide during the holiday season. Maybe people liked the idea of a system that had a screen embedded in its twin-stick controller? Then Christmas ended and Nintendo, as company CEO Satoru Iwata has apologized for, stopped releasing Wii U games and started delaying everything (you're ok with Pikmin 3 coming out in August, yeah? And The Wonderful 101 coming out in the month of TBD?). Consoles usually have software droughts when they launch, but still... people aren't buying the Wii U. The excitement isn't there. Unfortunately, for Nintendo, their other platform, the 3DS, is having some problems of its own. The portable system is thriving in Japan, where Nintendo sold 5.7 million systems in the past year (April 2012-March 2013). The company sold 4.3 million in North America, 4 million in the rest of the world. Sorry, but there's a dark linking to this silver cloud: in the year before that, Nintendo sold more 3DS systems in North America and the rest of the world (4.7 million and 4.1 million from April 2011-March 2012, respectively). Sales were down last year. They're only up for 3DS in Japan (up from 4.8 million). Game sales are at least up everywhere. Nintendo sold more 3DS games in each part of the world last year than in the year before. The 3DS' performance in America is a bit of a bummer to those of who now see the 3DS as just about the best system around. The machine has hits its stride over here, as we've pointed out. It's getting great games all the time. It works well. We're having a blast. Maybe Nintendo's problem is its own pre-3DS system, the DS, which sold just 10,000 units in Japan in the last year but more then 2 million in North America. So what's Nintendo going to do about this? This is what they say they have cooking for Wii U: For the “Wii U” system, launched in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013, there were some delays in software development that resulted in intervals between new software title releases at the early stage of this year. Taking this into consideration, for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, we plan to concentrate on proactively releasing key Nintendo titles from the second half of this year through next year in order to regain momentum for the platform. Nintendo strives to improve the sales by communicating the compelling nature of our hardware and software to as many people as possible through our new network service called “Miiverse,” which offers an environment where people can empathize with others and share their gaming experiences. We also strive to reduce costs to improve hardware profitability. And this is what they've got going on with 3DS: For “Nintendo 3DS,” in order to set in the overseas markets the same trend as in the Japanese market, we will concentrate on proactively releasing key Nintendo titles. “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” a hit title which contributed to sales growth in Japan, will be released in the U.S. and Europe in June 2013, and the latest titles from the Pokémon series, “Pokémon X Version/Pokémon Y Version,” will be released globally in October 2013. In addition, we are planning to more actively support the Japanese software developers in distributing their key titles overseas. In Japan, we continuously strive to stimulate the market by releasing new titles such as “Tomodachi Collection,” launched on April 18, 2013 as a sequel to the popular “Nintendo DS” version of “Tomodachi Collection.” Furthermore, in overseas markets, we will more actively attempt to boost the sales rate of the downloadable format of packaged software, a sales method that we started last summer, in order to increase the number of new sales opportunities and improve our profitability. Nothing drastic. Ride out the storm? Or time for something drastic? Yearning to do some number-crunching of your own? Have at it:

Aksys Games has announced a North American release of Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi on the Nintendo 3DS. The game is based on Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, which made it to the PSP last February.

The female-focused "otome" romance game comes to Nintendo's handheld with new story content and some 3DS-specific features, like 3D graphics and the ability to take your potentially creepster picture with the story's main characters.

No release date has been announced yet, but those interested can stay tuned to the official site for more.

It feels as though Nintendo's 3DS handheld game system has "arrived." Over the last few months, the library of 3DS games available has reached some sort of critical mass, and it seems there's a well-made, fun game for just about every type of gamer. But the spectre of the iPhone and Apple's App store lingers. Can Nintendo really hope to compete long-term with such popular, widely used competitors? The points of comparison are familiar now: Both the 3DS and the iPhone allow users to access a digital store and download games directly to their device. But games on the Apple app store are regularly free, and some very good ones cost as little as a buck or two. Compare that to the 3DS, where app-like digital-only games like HarmoKnight and Fluidity Spin Cycle cost anywhere from $10 to $15, along with the "top end" games like Luigi's Mansion and Mario Kart, which go for $40. For a long time, buying a game on an iPhone or Android phone was far easier than on a 3DS, though Nintendo's recent push for digital purchases (and the now-standard simultaneous digital release of all Nintendo-published games) has evened the playing field somewhat in that regard. And of course, people are always carrying their phones with them, so it becomes a default portable gaming device by, well, default. But Nintendo does seem to have some fairly clear strategies to continue to push the 3DS apart from and in some ways ahead of its competition. The differences between the devices are pretty simple: The 3DS has some great games that aren't on iOS. And, the 3DS has buttons designed for playing games. But how is Nintendo leveraging those advantages to compete with smartphones? Last week at a Nintendo showcase in San Francisco, Nintendo's Scott Moffitt, a sales VP, began the introductory presentation with some interesting statistics: "With software, as with most things, there's a distinct difference between quantity and quality," Moffitt said. "The website 148apps.biz recently calculated that there are currently 139,000 different games actively available on the [Apple] app store." (As of this publication, 148apps reports that number has expanded to 143,263.) Moffitt repeated the number for effect: "One hundred and thirty-nine thousand. Huge number. That number is way too big to wrap your head around, so I try to think about it this way. If I wanted to spend just fifteen minutes sampling each one of those games, I'd be at it non-stop for four years. That's a ton of caffeine. "Obviously there are good games available for mobile platforms," Moffitt continued. "But the point is, the Nintendo 3DS has a record of quality that's hard to challenge." He then rattled off numbers: 49 games for the 3DS with a Metacritic score of 75 or higher, 11 with 85 or higher, and 5 above 90. (Whatever that really means.) "Nowhere else in portable gaming is high quality found so frequently," Moffitt said. So Nintendo is continuing to push the idea that quality, not quantity, is more important to the people who play their games. Let's step back from the spin for a second: It's certainly an open question as to whether the best games on the eShop are truly better than the best games on iPhone. Hell, one of the best iPhone games I've ever played was Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, which was originally a Nintendo DS game. If that game were made digitally available for the 3DS, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but its digital availability on iPhone (along with several other DS hits like The World Ends With You and Phoenix Wright) muddies the waters a bit. There have also even been a few games to go from 3DS (not just DS) to iPhone, including Final Fantasy Theatrhythm and Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds. I'd also be hard-pressed to say that HarmoKnight is really better than Beat Sneak Bandit or that Dillon's Rolling Western bests Bad Hotel. At least, a comparison between similar games on both systems is something of a wash. Once you get to the higher end of the 3DS library and start factoring in the Super Mario 3D Lands and the Fire Emblem: Awakenings, things do begin to tilt toward the 3DS. Sure, those games are excellent, and new. But then again, Final Fantasy Tactics and Rayman Jungle Run, both available on iOS, aren't exactly slouches, and Square Enix's classic Final Fantasy ports offer a level of depth comparable to Fire Emblem. Meanwhile, Luigi's Mansion local multiplayer is a ton of fun, but so is the wonderful iOS game Spaceteam, and that's free! Argh! The comparison is difficult. That said, it is almost certainly easier to find the best games on 3DS, and that counts for something. As Moffitt pointed out, the App Store can be overwhelming, and the wheat/chaff ratio is a lot for most people to deal with. Sure, you've got sites like Touch Arcade and our own Kotaku Mobile division, but even then it can be challenging to curate. The 3DS offers a much smaller selection, but they've given each game a stamp of approval that they're hoping carries more weight. With each new game on the eShop, plenty of questions arise about value. And as with most questions of that nature, the answers to those questions are at least in part dependent on the purchaser. Is HarmoKnight, priced at $15, really worth $12 more than Beat Sneak Bandit? There's an argument to be made for either game. After we had a chance to demo some of the new 3DS games on offer at last week's event, I sat down with Bill Trinen, product marketing manager and translator for legendary Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto. (That has got to be a fun job.) I asked Trinen about the App Store stats Moffitt was throwing around in the earlier presentation, and about Nintendo's approach to keeping the eShop's quality bar high. Nintendo seems to very much want us to know that 3DS games are more worthwhile than iPhone games. But what does that mean? "There's a few things," Trinen said. "One is, what is the interactive experience? The stuff you're seeing on the 3DS eShop, it's all kind of... unique ideas. Anything from Sakura Samurai, which is a game I'm a huge fan of that came out over a year ago on the eShop, and is kind of one of those examples of some of the early unique content from independent developers to something like Dillon's Rolling Western, or Mario & Donkey Kong. "And in each of those games, they each have a tremendous amount of depth, just in terms of the volume of gameplay, but they all also have really great precision controls that are really hard to do on other mobile devices. But really, the content that we're looking at, it's all about, 'what are the unique ideas that really leverage the hardware?' And that, to me, is why you would want to come and play games on the 3DS. They're gonna be unique experiences, they're gonna be things you can't play elsewhere, and [they're] gonna have a whole lot of content." I like the idea of a well-curated selection of games, particularly one that's organized so that there's no (or at least, minimal) overlap between the games on offer. If you get a game for the 3DS, the theory says, you know you're going to be getting something distinctive, and there's far less choice paralysis than there is when deciding which endless runner or tower-defense game to grab on iPhone. (Though surely this is more true of Nintendo-published games than of 3DS games from third-party developers.) That said, I'm not so sure I always see the "unique ideas that really leverage the hardware" Trinen is talking about. Sure, Pushmo is a nifty game, but wouldn't it work fine on a smartphone? I like HarmoKnight a lot, and it's great that the game has physical controls, since I've never really liked touchscreen music games. But what makes it uniquely 3DS? And while Dillon's Rolling Western certainly uses a creative mix of touchscreen, stylus and button controls, as my left pinky falls asleep I find thinking the same thing I did as I played Kid Icarus Uprising: Boy, it'd be cool if this game let me put down the stylus and use more traditional controls. The ecosystem of the 3DS is fundamentally different from the iPhone, of course. Not the app-store ecosystem—the internal ecosystem, and the way I use the thing. The way I use the thing was impossible even a year ago, but now that Nintendo has begun to offer all of their games digitally (and, crucially, I've upgraded to a 32GB SD card), my 3Ds has become more of a complete-feeling entity. I still own my 3DS primarily to play "big" games; not to play little games like the ones in the above paragraph, but things like Ocarina of Time and Rhythm Thief and the upcoming Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. I've begun to think of the 3DS' smaller games as enjoyable but disposable filler that fits into the cracks between the bigger games. I've got Professor Layton and Luigi's Mansion to occupy the bulk of my on-the-go gaming time; Pushmo is a nice garnish to break things up. (And I should say that it's not lost on me that because I get most of those games for free, I'm living an extra-rich 3DS existence. They're fun, but I could certainly live without most of my smaller 3DS games.) Really, the only way to make my 3DS usage analogous to my iPhone usage is to replace "bigger games" with "smartphone functionality." On my 3DS, the little games fit between the bigger games. On my iPhone, the little games fit between all the non-game stuff the device does. Fire Emblem and a handful of other games feel essential to my 3DS in the same way that email and Twitter functionality feel essential on my iPhone. Without the best 3DS games, I'd be much less interested in owning a 3DS; without email or Twitter, I'd be much less interested in owning an iPhone. It's something of a chicken and egg scenario: Because the 3DS is made primarily to play games, its games feel essential; because the iPhone is made to do so much else, it derives essentiality from other things. Given how muddled Nintendo's strategies can seem from the outside, it's nice to see them pursuing a plan that is both clearly articulated and appears to be actually working to set their device apart. Plenty of questions remain: Will it always be possible for them to make an argument for one more expensive device that does less than your phone, but does it better? Will third party developers find that it's actually easier to turn a profit selling games to 3DS owners who are more willing to pay higher prices, so long as their expectations are being met? And more immediately, will Nintendo ever come up with a plan half this effective for the Wii U? It remains to be seen. For now, Nintendo seems to be focusing on making a handheld platform with games that are all up to a consistent quality standards, different enough to be complementary, provide a baseline level of content. While some clunkers will slip through the cracks, the company is certainly working harder than Apple is to ensure that all of the games you can buy meet a baseline quality standard. As a result of that, and thanks to the general high quality of the best 3DS games, a good half-dozen of my 3DS games feel indispensable while none of my iPhone games do. And that, I'd imagine, has been Nintendo's hope all along.

If you've got games, consoles, and peripherals gathering dust and cluttering up your minimalist entertainment center, today is the today to convert them to credit. Gamestop has been the de factor black hole for trade-ins for longer than any of us can remember, but in recent years other retailers have jumped in to the fray. The paltry sums the big GS offers for your hard-earned discs have been a frequent lament, and while it's actually very possible to make a killing from Gamestop, the process isn't so transparent, and that's a PSA for another day. The Amazon deal we're bringing to you today is dead simple. Trade in $20 or more worth of "games, consoles, and accessories," and get a bonus $20 credit. That is a serious deal. Games like the 360 version of Tomb Raider will net you $54 in credit after the bonus is applied, and some titles will actually cross the $60 event horizon. Yes, you'll make money on a game you paid full price for. Shipping to Amazon is as low impact as possible, and FREE. What you will have to concern yourself with is that obviously, only new-ish titles are going to bring the big bucks. If you're sending in a legacy library, you may have to really stack them up to hit the $20 mark, as anyone who has ever traded at Gamestop knows. We saved the best but most intensive part of the deal for last. If you're a fast player or the game in question is short, you can buy from Amazon, play, and sell back before the 27th, making money in the process. Naturally, having a Prime account would make this a lot more feasible by making the initial shipping to you faster. Example: Buy Bioshock: Infinite for $50 with free shipping, play, ship by the 27th, get $56 (up to 36 +20) credit. [Amazon] Enjoy. The Circle Pad Pro, the second analog gamepad making Monster Hunter 3 and other titles more accessible on the 3DS, is now shipping in a 3DS XL configuration. But Nintendo has no plans to offer it at retail.

Japan is getting a very pretty Luigi 3DS XL handheld later this year. It's got little green Luigis all over it, and a special logo for his 30th anniversary, riffing on the Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary logo we saw a few years back. But wait, what's that? In the top-right corner, as spotted by Tiny Cartridge? Yup. Mario. Unable to resist the limelight even for a second. There’s a Mario on the Year of Luigi 3DS XL [Tiny Cartridge]

Analyzing a company's position and their marketing strategy with consoles is often of little interest to me: I'm not an investor, and sometimes the conversations feel like a slightly more sophisticated version of people arguing about the CONSOLE WARS™ on forums. Bleh. And yet I walked out of a Nintendo preview event yesterday with one thought on my mind: why would someone buy a Wii U when they can just buy a 3DS? Trying to pit a Wii U against other consoles doesn't work. Third-party wise, it's as if the console is playing catch-up with current gen titles (do people really want to buy a console to play stuff that's been out for over a year?), and despite promises, the support isn't likely to improve in the future. I don't note this because I want to continue the tiring narrative of Nintendo's Impending Doom. Hell, for all I know Nintendo has some aces up their sleeves this E3, and the 3DS itself waded for a bit before finding its stride. The 3DS had to drop its price first before it got any traction. So maybe things will change for the Wii U. But right here, right now, between titles like Fire Emblem, Professor Layton, Mario & Luigi, Etrian Odyssey, Bravely Default, a new Zelda game and countless other recently announced titles, the 3DS is the best system out there. That's exactly the problem. It's too good. If the appeal of a Nintendo system is Nintendo games, then it also means that Nintendo is only ever in competition with itself. You can't pit a Wii U against an Xbox 360 or a PS4 because, despite Microsoft and PlayStation's attempts to court the same wide audience Nintendo appeals to, despite the copycat attempts, and despite the aggressive focus on the casual market, other consoles don't give people the Nintendo Experience. That's what it comes down to: people buy a Nintendo system to play Nintendo games, because Nintendo games are fantastic. Nintendo knows it, otherwise they wouldn't keep trying to harp on our nostalgia by resurrecting older titles. In that sense, Nintendo's shaky third-party support doesn't matter so long as they have their awesome first-party games. Yesterday, during Nintendo's presentation to the press prior to the preview event, it struck me that even the worst Nintendo games tend to score rather high on Metacritic—85 and above! The only things that can provide the Nintendo experience are the Wii U and the 3DS, not other consoles. But if someone were to ask me right now, what should I buy? A Wii U or a 3DS? There would be no contest; I'd suggest the 3DS. Having a 3DS means I have zero desire to acquire a Wii U. You can get nearly every big franchise that Nintendo has to offer on the 3DS, and for cheaper: both the system and its games are less expensive than dropping cash on a new Wii U or any of its games. You can take the games with you, and you can play them in the in-between moments of your life—while on a bus, while waiting for something to finish—or you can sit down for extended periods of time to seriously play something. Whatever you'd like. The Wii U gives you some portability thanks to its tablet-like controller, which allows you to play games without the usage of a TV, but you're still chained to the living room. With the 3DS, you can experience Nintendo games however you'd like, and at nearly the graphical fidelity of a Wii U to boot. Let me tell you, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which I played a bit of yesterday, looks freaking amazing on the 3DS. Usually, Nintendo's handhelds don't nearly match up, graphics-wise, to its console offerings. That's not the case anymore. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to play your games on the big screen, more and more I'm finding that I want to play Nintendo's games on a handheld device. I don't want to play the new Animal Crossing on my TV, and turn-based games like Fire Emblem feel best when played on-the-go. While I'm sure games in the Mario franchises play just fine on the Wii U, I'm more in love with the design decisions made on the portable iterations—I want to play the follow-up to Super Mario 3D Land more than I do the next big Mario game on the Wii U. Maybe that one is just me, though. Regardless, the 3DS is excellent, perhaps too excellent. Nintendo has had this "problem" before; in previous generations, the DS was a top contender. Only, the DS provided a substantially different experience from that of the Gamecube and the Wii; the Wii was all about motion controls whereas the DS gave you a dual screen. I would have recommended buying both at the time. The Wii's U's one gimmick is its tablet, which gives you two screens and a touch interface. Except...the 3DS already has that. If you're the economical sort, good news, the 3DS gives you the double-screen gimmick and a touch interface along with one more novelty: 3D. Underutilized, sure, but still, it's there. What else? Earthbound, I guess, and Miiverse. The two desirable things I can name on the Wii U, guess what? I want them both on the 3DS instead.

Yesterday, Patricia posted a fan animation showing the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo changing into his recently-revealed new form via an elaborate 'magical girl'-style sequence. The official version we just received from the Pokémon Company? Not far off. Set it to a little music, toss a skirt on him, and you've got a party when Pokémon X and Y launch this October.
