Voxel team-based constructoshooter Ace of Spades is out tomorrow and I’m looking forward to seeing how it compares to my fond memories of yesterweek. With the free version beginning a pure game of digging and shooting, I was worried that the classes available in the commercial release would be annoying, but they have drill-guns and rocket launchers, which are the opposite of annoying unless they happen to be destroying the towering fortresses that I’m constructing. Even then, watching the battlements topple isn’t all bad because I tend to enjoy watching any sort of structure fall over. I thought Red Faction: Guerilla was a Fred Dibnah simulator. Here are some videos showing Ace of Spades’ classes and their gear.

Blocky multiplayer shooter that’s not at all Minecraft with guns, Ace of Spades, is coming out 12/12/12, which is the most terrifying date of all time. Think about it. It’s 6/6/6 times two! The number of the beast, doubled. And as John points out, it’s nine days before the apocalypse. What’s worse is that it will cost 9.99 in the currency of the beast (dollars). If you have a mirror strategically placed on your ceiling, close your eyes and say “Notch” three times. Now look up! It says 6.66! And it’s on the digital distribution platform of the beast, Steam. Why? What would happen if you spilled a drink on the Devil? What would come off Mister Hellpants? That’s right! Steam… what’s that noise? Get out of the house. Flee for your life! It’s coming.(more…)

There are spades for digging, blocks for building and a drill for tunnelling or demolition work. Ace of Spades a bit like Minecraft, you might think. Well, there are also rifles for shooting, grenades for exploding and sniper rifles for long range headpopping. It’s a team deathmatch game on large, destructible maps! But when I played it last week, Ace of Spades put me in mind of something else entirely.

Jagex, the UK-based studio responsible for the hugely successful RuneScape, have glued trumpets to their lips and heralded the announcement of their next game: Ace Of Spades. What’s that? You recognise a game by that name? Gosh, you’re a keen-eyed one. Indeed, a year and a half ago Quintin spotted the indie Minecraftish WWI multiplayer, and insisted that you play it. It seems Jagex took his instructions very seriously, and now they’re publishing it.

Have I got your attention? Then I’ll begin. Ace of Spades is a freeware, multiplayer Minecraft-alike that takes Minecraft’s cuboid building mechanics and drapes a World War 1 setting on top of it, with the end result being a huge, immersive, dynamic game of capture the flag.

On the one hand, you’ve got two teams of sixteen exchanging rifle fire and grenades, trying to push forward and outflank one another. On the other hand, both teams are trying to improve their position by building bunkers, bridges and tunnels. If you want to give it a shot you’ll find the game here and a guide to playing it here. If not, then I’ve assembled ten reasons why you should reconsider your position after the jump. I want to stand up and high-five RPS reader David Lake for sending this in, but alas, this is the internet. What a shame.(more…)
