Enlisting the community to help select new titles

July 9, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Steam Greenlight, a new platform feature that enlists the communitys help in selecting some of the next games to be released on Steam.

Steam Greenlight will allow developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the Community that their game should be released on Steam. Greenlight piggybacks on Steam Workshops flexible system that organizes content and lets customers rate and leave feedback.

As well as serving as a clearing house for game submissions, Greenlight will provide an incredible level of added exposure for new games and an opportunity to connect directly with potential customers and fans.

Making the call to publish or not publish a title isnt fun, said Anna Sweet, at Valve. Many times opinions vary and our internal jury is hung on a decision. But with the introduction of the Steam Workshop we realized an opportunity to enlist the community's help as we review certain titles and, hopefully, increase the volume and quality of creative submissions.

Steam Greenlight will be released August 30.

What a bloody funny world it is to live in these days. Not content with leaking the existence of most every major game before it’s even announced, the internet lately feels it’s necessary to also spread advance, unofficial word about big discount events. A dedicated explore of Steam’s database files has allegedly thrown up alleged details on what allegedly might allegedly be the alleged Steam Summer alleged Sale, which allegedly includes the following games and packs allegedly discounted enormously. There are dozens of the blighters. Allegedly.(more…)

Before he made a game about a boy with no skin and a fetus with a monocle, Edmund McMillen of Team Meat created a game about a young emo boy and his interplanetary adventures, one about a lonely man traveling through time and another about puking, along with a few others. Eight of these titles will be available on Steam in late August as a bundle called The Basement Collection, for $4.

The Basement Collection will include Time Fcuk, Aether, Spewer, Grey Matter, Meat Boy (flash prototype), Triachnid and a locked, secret title updated with new content, soundtrack, difficulty modes and achievements. Each game will come with bonus content such as development sketches and early prototypes, and The Basement Collection will feature four "very large bonus unlockables that should make fans of my work quite happy," McMillen writes.

The Basement Collection will also come with a free soundtrack with bonus indie remixes. Try out (i.e. "play") all of these titles for free via McMillen's Newgrounds page now, if you can spare a moment for puketastic, interstellar, time-traveling fun.

Valve has remained mum on the topic of a 2012 summer sale, but the Open SteamWorks CDR database has uncovered a list of bundles, mostly for indie titles, apparently set for the sale in Steam's backend. Reddit user Dweezy gathered a list of the bundles, broken down over an 11-day period, along with a few other standalone collections.

Titles include Cave Story+, Botanicula, Splice, Braid, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, A Valley Without Wind, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Qube, Jamestown, Bit.Trip Runner and Beat, and Waveform. Other bundles, indie or otherwise, include Batman (Asylum, City and Impostors), the BioShock franchise, a Civilization collection, Saints Row: The Third franchise pack, Square Hit Collection and a THQ collection.

These oodles of bundles have no release date nor price and are unconfirmed by Valve, but this could be a taste of the sweet summer sale to come. Check the entire list after the break, and put that ice pick down.

In just a single week since the start of our beta program, there've been plenty of hilariously inventive "Meet the Heavy" spoofs getting passed around here in the SFM office. Here are some of our favorites so far:

Meet the Family

A pretty sweet action scene that follows Scout and Spy as they try to infiltrate the BLU base. We don't know about you, but we'd like to find out what happens next.

Meet the Modern Heavy

There are a lot of hats in this short. Even the bullets have hats.

Heavy Looses an IQ

This clip answers the age-old question, "If Heavy Weapons Guy had roughly the IQ of a boiled lobster, how long would it take him to shoot off his own hand?" Answer: About forty-three seconds.

Stop Meeting the Heavy

Give Scout this: You have probably never seen anyone more excited to be on camera in your life.

If you enjoyed these as much as we did, don't forget to check out more amazing videos at our Community Spotlight playlist.

In fact, we've been enjoying 'em so much that we've decided to open the gates a little wider and hand out another round of beta keys. So to all you filmmakers who requested beta keys out there itching to get your hands on the SFM tool: Log into Steam and see if you made the cut! (And if you didn't, hang in there! There are more keys on the way.)
