Despite its crass and often offensive tone, Saints Row: The Third was quite well done, and turned the well-traveled sandbox urban action genre on its head a few times. Don't believe us? This weekend is your chance to find out for free, as the game is free-to-play until Sunday over on Steam. For the cost of your bandwidth and an hour or so of downloading, you can take a trip to Steelport, and be both disgusted and thrilled at the same time.

And if you like the game as much as we did, you can buy it on Steam for just $13.59, 66% off of the standard price. This one's not for the kids, but it is as much fun as you'll have flying around in a hovercraft all year long.

During a panel pitching Steam and Greenlight to indies at Fantastic Arcade, Valve presented some numbers representing the usage of the service.

According to the slide, 949,156 users have participated, casting 9,998,476 votes toward getting games onto Steam. 3,195 games have been posted to Greenlight for consideration, of which 1,110 got banned so far, for various reasons ranging from content considered inappropriate to just being a joke.

Finally, there are around 800 "Legitimate, Publicly Visible Items" on the service. And of those, of course, ten have been officially "greenlit."

Valve’s designing its own hardware. This has been known – in various forms – for quite some time. But, more and more, it sounds like Gabe Newell’s mighty lair in the (kinda occasionally) frigid wastes of Bellevue, Washington is converting into full-on Santa’s magical toy shop mode. Admittedly, wearable computing‘s still the stuff crazy future fever dreams are made of, but in the meantime, Valve’s churning out prototypes right and left. Its goal? “To make Steam games more fun to play in your living room.” And, according to a new report, a lucky few of us will get to continue Steam’s slow-but-sure conquest of our homes as soon as next year.

Valve in-house hardware hacker Jeri Ellsworth told Engadget that she hopes to hold an external beta test, tied to Steam, for the company's first hardware product next year. Internal beta tests within Valve are already ongoing.

She wasn't clear on what the device would be, but the stated goal is "to make Steam games more fun to play in your living room." The new hardware is some kind of input method to improve playability of PC games using Big Picture Mode. It could be a controller, or it could be some kind of keyboard/mouse combination.

Or it could be maracas. Maracas have proven perfect for every game we've tried them with, including Samba De Amigo, and ...
