Castle Crashers is live on Steam right now for your adorable medieval animal orb pleasure, for $15 on PC and Mac. Since Castle Crashers launched in 2008 and is on both XBLA and PSN, the Steam release directly benefits staunchly anti-console gamers and those with a "don't play a game until it's been out for four years" policy.

For those in either category, or for anyone looking to grab a free copy of Castle Crashers on Steam, stay tuned to the Joystiq Twitter account (Officially Verified!), where we'll be giving away free codes. Good luck, valiant Steam knights.

As a pioneer of the Steam Greenlight program, there couldn't have been a more random choice than McPixel. The hilarious, absurd adventure game-meets-WarioWare exercise in preventing explosions is the first Greenlight game to make it to Steam, where it's available now for $4.99.

McPixel is a series of 100 scenarios in which the player has 20 seconds to "prevent stuff from blowing up using available tools." It was recently featured in one of the custom arcade cabinets at Fantastic Arcade, where it benefited from an even more context-free presentation and could thus confuse people who didn't know what they were playing at all.

Resident Evil 6 is due out next week, and to celebrate, Capcom is offering half off of either of the last two games in the series over on Steam. Both Resident Evil 5 and the non-canon spinoff Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City are available for half price, making the first one $9.99, and the second $24.99 for the base game, or $38.94 with all of the DLC included.

At those prices, there's never been a better time to sign the rent agreement and let the Evil move on in. Just be careful with letting Evil be your roommate: It always leaves empty milk cartons in the fridge, and never washes the dishes, no matter what the chore list says.

If you're a small developer used to making small games, there's a lot you can do when presented with a bigger budget and a major publisher. You can make a deeper, more involved story than usual; you can design bigger and more complex environments; you can hire Hollywood voice talent; you can motion-capture every motion that it's possible to capture.

Arkedo Studio chose to apply its resources to filling the screen with as much hand-drawn 2D art as possible, all the time. It's a remarkable achievement. Hell Yeah! doesn't just have some of the best 2D art in recent memory, it has the most.

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We believe they deserve a wider audience with the Joystiq Indie Pitch: This week, Melbourne developer Finn Morgan discusses the affects of color-coded gravity in Colour Bind, out today on Steam.
What's your game called and what's it about?

It's called Colour Bind (easy to misread, I know - it's "Bind" with no "l"), and it's a world where objects of a different colour fall in a different direction. Maybe red objects fall down as normal, but green objects fall up and blue objects fall sideways. You control a car thing that has to drive to the goal of each level, overcoming various obstacles and puzzles that are made possible by the weird outcomes of the fact that gravity is pulling different objects in different directions.

What inspired you to make Colour Bind?

It's kind of a silly story. I was walking through Melbourne during a traffic jam, and it occurred to me that, viewed from above, the shapes of the long lines of cars moving and stopping in streams would make interesting shapes for a 2D platformer. The cars in this scenario would have to have gravity pulling them away from the camera, but the character in this hypothetical platformer would need to fall "down" relative to the camera.

Thinking about this situation, of different bodies being pulled by gravity in different directions depending on their "type," distracted me from that game and eventually turned into Colour Bind.

Mark of the Ninja is coming to Steam next month, arriving on October 16 priced at $14.99. Klei Entertainment told Rock Paper Shotgun about the PC port's details, including that Games for Windows Live won't be a part of it.

Klei's 2D stealth-a-lot came to Xbox Live Arcade earlier this month. Mark of the Ninja certainly made an impression on Ludwig of the Joystiq, with his review saying the game "shines a light on the stealth genre, revealing the qualities you knew were there but couldn't quite see."

Cortex Command is a recipe book for robots fighting each other across a 2D landscape. It is brilliant, it is difficult, it is awkward, it is ludicrous and fantastic. It’s one of my favourite indie projects – long hampered by tortuously slow development over many years – and I am pleased as punch that it is now about to find itself on that vast steambotic behemoth of a distribution platform. Data Realms have been working on the campaign setting quite intensively – we had a brief look at it some months back – and that’s what will roll out with the 1.0 Steam version. There’s a video detailing the new meta-game which is overlaid on to the familiar physics-heavy tactical game. Massive 40-minute preview video below, dominated by an explanation of the strategic game. Skip to around 35 mins for serious tactical action bit, although the dev’s voice is getting drowned out a bit by that stage.

Left 4 Dead 2 will receive Steam Workshop support starting in the middle of October, according to a recent developer blog. The system will allow players to rate and install community-created add-ons, including new maps, weapons, items and mutations thanks to an "expanded scripting tool."

Steam Workshop will roll out for PC, Mac and Linux versions of Left 4 Dead 2 next month, though no specific release schedule has been announced yet by Valve.
