Clan of Champions, a multiplayer action game from NIS America and Tenchu developer Acquire Corp., will hit Steam on October 30. It's set to launch on PSN at a later date.

The first we heard of Clan of Champions, NIS was planning a release on Xbox 360 and PS3. Looks like plans have changed. Clan of Champions enables single-player or online multiplayer, with warriors fighting to become the one true champion using short-range magic spells or close-range combat. Remember: There can only be one. Unless you're on a multiplayer run.

The first Borderlands 2 downloadable expansion, Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty, is landing next week on October 16. Associated Press reports the DLC is set in a new area which features the bandit-occupied slums of Oasis. Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford described the area as a dried-up landscape "more like Tatooine than an ocean." The Sand Skiff vehicle Pitchford discussed last month also features in the expansion, along with a new currency called "seraph crystals."

Captain Scarlett is the first of four downloadable expansions Gearbox is releasing for Borderlands 2, each priced at $9.99. The Borderlands 2 Season Pass makes all four pieces of DLC accessible when they release for $29.99. We've reached out to Gearbox for more information on the upcoming DLC.

Whats new in the 1.1 update for Toy Soldiers on PC:

Steamworks!

Steamworks features have now been integrated into Toy Soldiers! Steam achievements, Leaderboards, and saving games to the Steam Cloud are now a part of Toy Soldiers for PC.
Toy Soldiers for PC no longer requires Games For Windows LIVE to play! Players who are still working on their Games for Windows LIVE gamerscore need not worry though. After the patch is applied and you launch the game through Steam, you will see a dialog box that will give you the choice to play the new Steamworks version, or the Games For Windows LIVE version of the game. Each version will have its own save file, so progress you make in one version will not be visible by the other.

Added Resolution Support

Full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) has been added! We have also disabled the check to see what resolutions your display card supports, as this was causing some valid resolutions to be thrown out in some cases. If you happen to choose a resolution that your display card does not support, the game will return to the previous resolution after a few seconds.

Performance improvements

This patch includes improvements to the audio engine that fix performance problems with the games framerate, particularly for users running Windows XP. Optimizations to particle effect rendering have also been made.

We have introduced more options for players to tweak the performance of Toy Soldiers for their specific hardware needs. The following options are now available in the Video Settings menu under Help & Options:

Screen Filters - Setting this to Off will turn off screen overlay rendering (this improves performance on lower-spec machines). This setting is On by default.
Particle Intensity - Setting this to Low or Off reduces or removes the number of particles on the majority of particle effects. This is set to High by default.

Other issues that have been addressed

Many users were reporting crashes to desktop upon starting the game. In many cases, this is because the computer did not meet the minimum specifications for the game. In other cases, however, this was caused by Games for Windows LIVE not being updated. Users now have the choice to play the Steamworks version, which will avoid this issue. We have also addressed many crashes found by the community

Saluting Modern Warfare 3's Season of Content, the fourth and final DLC collection deploys with five all-new Multiplayer Maps. Surrounded by mountains, "Gulch" sends combatants into a forgotten mining town with only mine shafts and equipment sheds for cover. The Jersey coast awaits in "Boardwalk," where fun in the sun means facing enemies on the beach. Players must earn their sea legs in "Off Shore" and "Decommission," where deadly oceanic oil rigs and a maze of rotting ocean liners provide the perfect setting for shoreline-based combat. Rounding out the collection is a trip to New Orleans war-torn French Quarter, where "Parish" pits players against one another amid the city's rubble.

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We believe they deserve a wider audience with the Joystiq Indie Pitch: This week, Johannes, Anders, Martin, Poi and the Coilworks team discuss going Greenlight and modern-retro challenges with Cloudbuilt.
What's your game called and what's it about?

Our game is called Cloudbuilt, and at its core it is all about challenging high-speed action and platforming. We are borrowing inspiration from old-school games, combining it with modern elements and adding some unique twists. We really think that we have brought booster powers to a whole new level with this game.

So what will Cloudbuilt bring in terms of challenge?

We want there to be plenty of room for the player to improve. We don't want to make Cloudbuilt challenging in the sense of simply killing the player. Sure, there are parts of the game where people tend to die a lot, but we make sure it's not because of unfair design. Our goal is to make you feel in control, thus should you fail, it would be due to your own fault. That makes it truly rewarding and when you clear a level, you'll feel like you've improved and mastered something.

Doing several easy tasks at once quickly becomes challenging. Wall-running on its own is not that hard, but wall-running while dodging mines and shooting at enemies, all while preparing to jump onto a new wall, is a little bit harder.

Because we are giving the player access to all abilities from the start, we will be focusing on the player's development instead of a character's. There is no difference in what a player can do in the beginning compared with the end. But there will most likely be a big difference in play style and the player's way of thinking.

Valve is seeking people to test out some of its hardware prototypes, along with released and unreleased games. Right now its looking for people around Valve's offices, in the Seattle or Bellevue area, but it may conduct remote testing in the future, so everyone is invited to fill out a playtester survey.

The survey asks, among other questions, how many years you've been playing games, for your favorite game, which difficulty you typically play on, your overall impression of Valve games, if you get motion sickness when playing first-person shooters and who the beneficiary on your life insurance policy is. OK, we made that last one up, but coming from the company that created Aperture Science, it's not too outlandish.

Looks like Valve is getting the ball rolling on its oft-rumored hardware-distribution arm. Which might in fact be a real arm that distributes hardware. You just never know with Valve.
