After a successful Greenlighting, Air Buccaneers (which apparently they’re spelling “AirBuccaneers”, but I’m not) arrives on Steam today. The game that has rather won Jim’s heart, and the attention of RPS’s readers, is officially there for even the likes of you to play. The multiplayer airship FPSing is a historically accurate recreation of the floating battles between the Bucanneers and the Vikings to dominate the Ancient North.

Should you play tonight, the developers will be about on the servers, and will be flinging Steam codes into the chat for people to grab, to get the full version of the game. And once Jim has escaped the mad hell of moving house, he’ll be organising some games for RPS readers in the near future.

Might & Delight patched a new 'Easy Mode' into puzzle-platformer Pid earlier this week. The Swedish studio redesigned levels to lower the mode's difficulty and shortened boss fights. Normal Mode also sees some tweaks, with the developer saying changes were made based on feedback from critics and fans.

In our review, Garrett Martin grew frustrated with the game's difficulty spikes, and Might & Delight now says those spikes are "lessened" thanks to the update. Overall, Garrett rated Pid at two and a half stars, saying the game comes alive when it sprinkles puzzles on top of its straightforward platforming, but also "makes a few crucial mistakes that similar recent games avoided."

If you want to try but not necessarily buy Pid for yourself, the game now has a demo available on Steam.

Steam Big Picture, the mode that transforms Steam into a big-screen service easily controllable with a gamepad, is officially live now, following a beta that began in September. To celebrate, a range of games that fully support controllers are on sale through December 10 at 10 a.m. PT, some for up to 75 percent off.

A few games on sale are Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers, Castle Crashers, Portal 2 (now with split-screen), Left 4 Dead 2, A Virus Named Tom and Mark of the Ninja. There are more than 30 games on sale, all of them featuring full controller support.

Steam breaks down games into full and partial controller support: There are 41 games with full support and 387 with partial, though on the Big Picture sale page Steam lists 70 with full and 851 with partial, so there may be some hiding in the rafters. All games are accessible in Big Picture mode, though not all support gamepads, of course.

I’d forgotten Steam’s Big Picture Mode wasn’t properly out already. Does anyone still run a non-beta version of Steam? Why would you? Madness in your head? But it was, and now it no longer is. The version of the software that runs comfortably on your TV, and operates nicely with a controller, is now there for all. And to celebrate, a lot of actually really very good games are very, very cheap until the 10th. Games that are appropriate for sitting on your sofa, a 360 controller in hand, while attractive locals fan you with palm fronds.
