Some time-sensitive deals on Steam today for kinetically violent indie stand-outs Retro City Rampage and Hotline Miami, as well as many other games.

Retro City Rampage is only on sale for the next six hours at 50 percent off for $7.44. We should also mention the game is currently free for PlayStation Plus members on both PS3 and PS Vita for a limited time. Non-Plus PSN members can grab the game for $10, which is $5 off the regular price.

The Steam daily deals has Hotline Miami for $5 (50 percent off) and the more adorably violent Castle Crashers for $5.09 (66 percent off). There's also deep discounts on the Batman Arkham franchise and Magic: The Gathering.

The Easy Mode that Pid developer Might & Delight promised earlier this month is now live on Steam, offering "a version of the game that can be enjoyed by everyone." This would include us, we assume, especially since we found Pid to be "one of the most annoying games" of the year, with manic, frustrating difficulty spikes.

"In Pid's Easy Mode we have redesigned nearly all levels and maybe most importantly made all the boss fights shorter and more simple," Might & Delight writes on the Steam announcement. "We have studied the reviews and playthroughs on YouTube thoroughly to determine how we can create a version of the game that can be enjoyed by everyone. We have also reworked small parts of Normal Mode and the difficulty spikes that people encountered!"

The patch also allows players to change difficulty mid-game, without having to restart. Pid on, people.

Steam's Holiday Sale is relentless on day four, kicking off with a bundle of Portal and Portal 2 for 75 percent off, or just $6.25. Also on sale is Anno 2070 ($20), Chivalry: Medieval Warfare ($12.50), Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package ($7.50), Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Complete Pack ($13.50) and Carrier Command: Gaea Mission ($25).

These games are on sale for two days, while yesterday's deals have one day remaining. The publisher and indie packs are still good for the grabbing, as are the quick-time flash sales.

#steam Steam's ridiculous sales are a big factor in my financial woes, yet I can't seem to keep away from them. Now I'm dragging all of you down with me by reminding you that Steam's holiday sale is going on now. So sorry! I just really hate to feel alone in my over-indulgence in cheap PC games. More »

Ah, the steady march of time. Just as the electronic transition frequency of an atom can be used to measure the passage of time, so too can the frequency with which money is electronically transitioned out of bank accounts during Valve's Steam Holiday Sale.

Today's offerings, which last for the next 45 hours or so, include Dead Island for $6.79, Dungeon Defenders for $3.74, the DOTA 2 Early Access Pack for $15, Train Simulator 2013 for $13.74, 50 to 75 percent off Blood Bowl games and a massive Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War franchise collection for $10.

Unfortunately, RailDriver's insane Desktop Train Cab Controller is not on sale, but take it from us, dressing the part goes a long way in creating the illusion of realism. Especially when you're simulating trains on public transit.

01 GETTING STUCK BETWEEN FLOORS (IN STAIRS AND ELEVATORS)
For you that have this problem you MUST DO the following! Go to OPTIONS, then ADVANCE and then turn SURFACES to OFF. Now you should be able to enter floors in the game without problems.

CLEAR BLOOD INFO
if this function is turned ON the blood will be removed when it lands. You should try and play the game with this turned OFF first.
If you feel that the game runs slower with SURFACES OFF you can try and switch to ON, to save memory.

02 GLASS BREAKING BUG (HOT AND HEAVY)
We have limited the amount of sounds that the game can play at once (which was what caused the problem with the game crashing).

Note: Win 8 seems to be more sensitive to this then other platforms, but we think the sound limit we have will be enough, since it worked for those that helped us test this.

03 SLOWDOWN
It helped our testers to turn SURFACES to OFF and CLEAR BLOOD to ON. That made the game run in normal speed for them, so try that if you have slowdowns.

04 - MISC FIXES
Minor issues like the boiling pot/werewolf bug have been fixes as well.

Build 174448 for Serious Sam 3 is released.
If you have previously opted into public beta, you already have this. For all others, here is the list of changes:

- Linux: Added log messages for connected gamepads.
- Linux: Added inp_bLogGamepadEvents cvar for logging gamepad events.
- Linux: Fixed crashes on some window managers due to missing Xlib atoms.
- Added support for OpenGL tearing in VSync via 'ogl_bVSyncTearing' cvar. When cvar is on, screen refresh will wait for number of retraces specified via 'gfx_iWaitVSyncs' cvar and if more vertical retraces passed, will not wait for next one, but will do swap as soon as possible.
- Fixed wrong report of utilized OpenGL extensions.
- Slider widgets in color options menu are now enabled/disabled depending on support of gamma-correction also, not only full-screen or window mode.
- Fixed resolution downsizing not downsizing some buffer in-game causing more GPU memory usage than needed.
- Fixed command bindings not displaying properly in spectator view HUD.
- Added news feed to start screen.
- Editor: Fixed crash when exporting textures.
- Editor: Khnum and Aircraft puppets no longer ignore lethal damage. This allows Killer entity as well as macro functions such as DropDead() to affect these puppets.
- Editor: Added a new macro function to base entity: InflictWeaponDamage(). This function deals damage equivalent to one produced by any given weapon.

Fixes

Crash while loading saves (especially old version saves)

Correctly sets the Heroic trait to cost 2 instead of 0

Removed the setting of arctic terrain from Vetrar's Howl (it was overwriting cities)

Fixed a bug that caused auto-targeting of tactical units when all you did was previously set them as a target, but have since only walked up next to them

Fixed datadef corruption issues (which caused issues like trolls losing their death animation and crashing the game when they were killed)

Update Notes - Dec 19

NEW FEATURES:
-Spider dens have a full life cycle. Tiers are more meaningful, and higher tiered dens will require strategy to overcome.
-Spider queens come out of the highest-tier nests to wreak havoc and spread spideryness.
-A new type of warrior spider protects high-level dens and the queen. They are resistant to kiting, so a frontal assault is not recommended.
-Wilson can build fire darts, and light pretty much every creature on fire.
-Wilson can build a spider hat from egg sacks that lets him control spiders. Just be careful when you take it off!
-Wilson can build tooth traps and use them for defense or for guilt-free rabbit hunting.
There is a new, experimental map gen algorithm that you can use. It is a work in progress and is largely untested and unbalanced, so you may not live for very long! (Dont worry, though - the old map gen is still the default!)
-Pet Smallbirds will demand food when hungry, and can starve to death.
-Wilson can build a warm hat. It... makes something happen.
-New epic fight and dawn music.

TUNING:
-High-level hound attacks are more intense.
-Krampus is silent until you reach a certain threshold of naughtiness.
-Farming takes longer.
-Some fruits and cooked foods are a bit less potent.
-Seeds drop less frequently.
-The birdcage seed sorter is less reliable.
-Werepig monster meat threshold increased to 4, werepigs drop normal meat.

FIXES:
-Items that fall out of bounds will disappear after a bit.
-Most monsters will ignore things that are out of bounds.
-Gobblers and Krampusses try to avoid getting caught against the edge of the world.
-Fireflies drop individually.
-Mobs shouldnt get stuck in sliding animations.
-Fix gold getting stuck on pig king's head
-Fix exploding beemine-in-backpack

Yes, that’s right. It’s that time of year again. If you’ve been a good girl or boy, then Santa Gabe will slip down your chimney and deposit some really rather decent prices for PC games. The Steam Holiday Sale has begun, with the usual shennanigans of voting for deals, daily offers, flash sales, and astonishingly cheap publisher packs.

Mirror’s Edge for £3.24, Arkham City for £4.99, every Valve game in one pack for an utterly mad £25… You know the deal.

And an odd Easter Egg in there – for utterly bemusing reasons we’ve still not been told, the entirely finished, already in multiple languages Scribblenauts Unlimited, is at 33% off with an EU release date of the 15th February next year. Bonkers.

The first day of the Steam Holiday Sale is up like a pack of airborne reindeer right now, offering 75 percent off Mirror's Edge ($5), Wargame: European Escalation ($10) and the Prince of Persia franchise. Scribblenauts Unlimited is 33 percent off ($20), while entries in the Borderlands and Hitman franchises are 50 percent to 75 percent off.

Flash sales today include Batman: Arkham City GOTY ($7.50), Natural Selection 2 ($10), Fable 3 ($25) and War of the Roses ($15). The Indie Super Mega Pack includes 30 games each discounted up to 75 percent off, bundled for $70. There are a range of publisher packs as well, from Ubisoft, Valve, THQ, 2K Games, Bethesda, Sega and Square Enix.

Check out all the day's deals on the Steam Store. The Holiday Sale runs through January 5.

All aboard the Steam train - yes, even you, Linux users. The Steam Linux beta is now open to everyone, officially ditching the closed beta that began in early November.

Linux users will need to have Ubuntu 12.04 and the latest version of the Steam client; complete instructions for setting up Steam are on the Ubuntu wiki, with a brief rundown on the Steam community page. Steam has an entire catalog of Linux-supported games, including Team Fortress 2, Amnesia, Killing Floor, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery, Trine 2, World of Goo and more.

Choo-choo.
