John made me write that headline. And he was encouraged by Jim, who responded with an “arf”. RPS: the site that writes about the biggest things to happen in PC gaming with references to wee wee. And wee it is. Piston that is, the surprise announcement from PC makers Xi3 and Valve that they’re building a tiny, modular PC together. It was such a surprise that when Nathan wrote about it, all we knew was the name, the companies involved, and that the thing is small enough to be held in your hand. But I have more information and a video below. You’ll see just how small it is, and gasp as I did. It’s like the kitten of the PC world.(more…)

Hey everyone, you’re never going to believe this. The Steam Box? It’s totally real. I know, right? I mean, a series of totally unsubstantiated rumors from Valve alphabeard Gabe Newell was dubious at best, and Big Picture mode spent so much time in development for no reason whatsoever. But somehow – completely unexpectedly – we’re now here, watching Valve and mini-PC maker Xi3 team up to reveal “an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand.” Xi3 also compared the device’s physical size to that of a grapefruit, meaning that this is yet another mind-blowing technological advancement I’ll have to worry about accidentally eating.

Graphics powerhouse Nvidia is entering the portable gaming market with Project Shield, an Android handheld fitted with the company's newly unveiled quad-core Tegra 4 mobile processor. Shield, showcased by Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at this year's CES, resembles a PS3 or Xbox 360 twin-stick controller but attached to a flip-top 5-inch 'retinal display' multitouch screen with 1280x720 HD resolution at 294 dpi. The Tegra 4 chip it contains, which Nvidia claims is the world's fastest mobile processor, offers effectively six times greater visual output than its Tegra 3 predecessor, as found in Microsoft Surface tablets. Nvidia tells our friends at Engadget that the device is expected to ship in Q2 of this year. One crucial factor which remains undisclosed is the price.

Shield also has 38 watt hours of batteries, which translates into 5 to 10 hours of gameplay or 24 hours of HD video, and a bass reflex audio system with a greater signal-to-noise ratio than the iPhone 5. In addition to the standard audio jack, Shield has a microSD slot, a micro USB port, and an HDMI port that Huang demonstrated with an LG 4K resolution HDTV. Shield's 'console-grade' analog sticks are joined by a d-pad and a standard quartet of buttons, as well as triggers and bumpers.

Huang also demonstrated a few games from Nvidia's Tegrazone store being played on the device, followed by a brief run of mega-mech battling in Hawken. Next, Huang detailed how Shield can wirelessly stream from a PC across a local network to Shield, using this to play Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin's Creed 3 on the handheld. As Engadget reports, there was perceivably very little lag. The demo also showed Shield accessing Steam on the PC, with Huang underling the ease with which Big Picture Mode can be used via Shield to bring Steam games to HDTVs.

You can watch the full CES demonstration of Project Shield on Nvidia's Twitch.tv page. It's roughly 40 minutes long, and begins at around the 2h02m mark.

Valve has announced the Steam Holiday Sale is being extended through this weekend, obliterating any false sense of security felt by your credit cards. The Encore Weekend, as Valve is dubbing it, is giving users another chance to get the sale's biggest discounts on a select number of games. It kicks off at 1PM ET (10AM Pacific, 6PM Brit-time) on Saturday, January 5, and comes to a this-time-for-good close at 1PM ET on Monday, January 7.

In what was meant to be the final day of sales, today's discounted games include Rage (75 percent to $4.99), Sleeping Dogs (66 percent to $16.99), Forge (50 percent to $9.99), and Amnesia: The Dark Descent ($4.99). If franchise discounts are more your kind of thing, you can now get Crysis, Crysis 2, and Crysis Warhead for a total of $17.99, or the two Trine games plus the Goblin Menace DLC for Trine 2 for $8.74. And, as ever, there's still plenty of time to get on board with yesterday's deals.

Faster than you can repeat a surname, the James Bond games have disappeared from Steam and Activision's own download store. In addition, the download versions of the games 007 Legends, Blood Stone and Quantum of Solace don't show up on Amazon, though of course the disc versions are still available there.

The likely explanation would seem to be expiring rights to the 007 license, but the timing doesn't make sense on that, considering that 007 Legends was just released in October (and November on PC). We're investigating the matter, though not in the sexy, brutal James Bond method: we've just asked Activision about it.

What are you doing to help pack the coffers at Valve? Seriously, you guys, it's up to each and every one of us to cough up dough for reduced-price games during Steam's annual ludicrous sales. If not you, then who?

Today's Steam Holiday Sale deals run the gamut from meticulous murder simulators to football management simulators called Football Manager. The Thief series is 75% off, allowing you to grab all three entries for $6.74 - if you're into piecemeal, they're $2.49 each. Civilization V and its two predecessors (plus corresponding expansions) are also 75% off each, while Football Manager 2013 is marked down to $19.99 and Bastion is a paltry $3.74.

For the full list of deals, head on over to Steam - oh, yeah, you're already over there. Okay then.

This year's Steam Holiday Sale is winding down, but there's still four more days to practice self-restraint or give into full PC purchasing indulgence.

There's still four hours to grab Deus Ex: Human Revolution for $5. There's also deep discounts on indie favorites The Binding of Isaac and Terraria at $1.49 and $3.39, respectively. Alan Wake's entire very bad vacation is also on sale for $9.99.

As for the deals you'll have a little more time to contemplate: Torchlight, May Payne, Transformers and Total War franchises are all 50 to 75 percent off. The underappreciated Awesomenauts is $3.39, which is a great 2D arena game if you've got some friends to practice with over the holiday.

Day 11 of Steam's holiday sale kicks off with Mark of the Ninja for $7.50, the Far Cry franchise pack for $50, the Mount and Blade franchise and Orcs Must Die franchise for $8.75, the Doom games and additional content for up to 75 percent off, and Age of Empires 3: Complete Collection for $10, or 75 percent off.

Yesterday's offers are good for another day (as of today, like right now), and they still include the BioShock franchise for $10, 75 percent off a handful of Grand Theft Auto games, the two Galactic Civilizations games and both Witcher games, Skyrim and its DLC for up to 75 percent off, and Payday: The Heist for $5.

There are only a few days left to splurge indiscriminately, before you attempt to hold yourself to that New Year's resolution and save up some extra cash in 2013. Then there are only a few more days until you break that resolution, but still. Get some games while the getting's good.
