The Steam database is a dark and convoluted mine, with twisting tunnels of useless content and, every now and then, a diamond. NeoGAF member Stumpokapaw braved the database and dusted off a few gems, including the addition of Halo 2 and Halo 3.

The Halo 2 and 3 database entries included links to Steam Community pages for each game, according to Stumpokapaw and Redditor whatsmyPW, who provided the above screenshot. The Community links no longer resolve those pages, and the Halo 3 database history shows the app was edited today to remove the website name.

Halo 2 and 3's existence in the database doesn't mean these games are coming to Steam, but it could point to some form of Community support on Steam in the future. With the Steam Box on the way, anything is possible (yes, even that, you absolute freak). Other games in the database, listed by Stumpokapaw, include Fez, Shadow Warrior Complete, Dyad, The King of Fighters 13 (and 2002 Unlimited Match and '98 Unlimited Match), Halo: Combat Evolved, Quantum Conundrum 2, The Witness and Second Life.

Dyad, at least, is definitely on its way to Steam, developer Shawn McGrath tells us.

Dyad is coming to Steam, developer Shawn McGrath confirms to Joystiq. Dyad was spotted on a list of new titles buried deep within the recesses of the Steam database, and it appears the secret is now out.

"This was a rather interesting thing that happened," McGrath says. "I didn't plan on announcing Dyad on Steam yet, but what can I do now?"

McGrath has been talking with Valve since March 2012 about getting Dyad on Steam, but nothing was certain until October. He hopes to have Dyad out in March, "but who knows when it'll actually come out?" McGrath says. The Steam version will be identical to 2012's PS3 iteration, since McGrath says he feels that one is complete.

Dyad made a psychedelic splash on PSN last year and we summed up its experience in one phrase and a lot of stars: "Dyad is magic."

As one of Team Meat's "Caturday" teasers, the team announced Steam support for Mew-Genics. The game was previously announced for iOS.

Team Meat also took a moment to discuss the history of Mew-Genics, noting that the project has been in development for 18 weeks. It started as a Ludum Dare 24 challenge under the "Evolution" theme, though Team Meat went with the "1,000 kittens" joke theme that the community attempted to vote in. After three days of development in Flash, the development duo realized it had a "monster mashup of many different game genres with an underlying theme [it] hadn't seen done in games before" on its hands. Mew-Genics then became the developer's full-time project.

The team also recognizes how obscure the "Caturday" teasers have become, saying it "will only do two more Caturday teasers after this then pull back and focus on getting the game done as well as officially announcing what the game actually is and how it plays."

The news-owls at VG247 spotted that there’s a video (below) of Gabe Newell’s recent talk at the University of Texas. In it he covers a wide range of issues relating to games, and particularly to Steam – discussing things such as the market for Team Fortress 2 hats. But what is perhaps most remarkable is that around 44 minutes, he talks about the problem of Steam being a curated store, and goes on to suggest that Valve are a bottleneck for publishing on the platform, and then even more radically, that they should remove themselves from the equation entirely: “So rather than having this curated store we’re going to say, “OK if we are thinking about this correctly, it really should be sort of a network API.” There should be this publishing model – and yes you have to worry about viruses and malware and stuff like that – but essentially anybody should be able to publish anything through Steam.”

That’s a download from the future right there. And there’s plenty more. Go watch it.(more…)

Antichamber is here, so the gaming community can finally play it, discuss it and figure out exactly what it is. Is it a game? An experience? A drug-free acid trip? If you're up to the challenge, check out Antichamber for yourself on PC via Steam, where it's on sale for $15 through February 6.

Antichamber, as crisp and busy as it may seem on the screen, might be more of a mental state than a game. As designer Alexander Bruce describes it, Antichamber is a "psychological exploration game where nothing can be taken for granted." It's like the experimental novel House of Leaves had a baby with Technicolor, then shoved it inside a PC. Or maybe it isn't - find out for yourself.

This photo involves one of those notorious horse head masks, and it proves that Gabe Newell, as ever, is a good sport. More »
