Pid developer Might & Delight announced Shelter today, a third-person, single-player PC and Mac game that sees you play as a badger mother protecting your cete of cubs from natural dangers. It's an unexpected turn for the Swedish indie studio and its former Grin members (Bionic Commando, Terminator Salvation), but perhaps it's about time we saw more of the monochrome omnivore in the gaming scene. Might & Delight promises an "emotional" game that won't shirk from the "harsh" realities of nature.

"It's our ambition to create an experience of immersion by making you feel exposed and vulnerable in the sometimes unforgiving hands of the wild", said lead level and game designer Andreas Wangler. "We are not saying nature is cruel, however what the mother and her cubs will experience is simply a fact of life. There are no boss fights in this game. No good or evil elements. It's simply about survival and protecting your offspring."

Shelter is slated for late summer 2013. In the meantime, Might & Delight has the game up on Greenlight in the hope the community digs it enough to bring it to Steam.

Darksiders 2 celebrates the Sunday before taxes are due in the US with a little financial relief: Get the game for 75 percent off, $12.50, on Steam through tomorrow morning. Which, again, is Tax Day in the US.

We're not trying to scare you, but taxes are kind of a big deal. They're on par with death, according to some famous dead people. But after your taxes are done, lighten the mood with some Darksiders 2. Sure, that's how that works.

During last year's Kickstarter campaign for Shadownrun Returns, developer Harebrained Schemes was dutiful in noting that every pledge level included a DRM-free version of the game. While that technically remains true, Harebrained Schemes has recently announced a slight caveat: All post-Berlin Campaign DLC will have DRM, and will require Steam.

It shakes out like this: Backers will receive both a DRM-free version and the Steam version of Shadowrun Returns (which does have DRM) when the game launches in June. Additionally, anyone who pledged enough to receive the game's Berlin Campaign DLC will also be given permanent access to both versions. After that, however, all DLC will be distributed exclusively through Steam, DRM in tow.

"The reason is that our license to develop Shadowrun Returns actually requires that the game and its DLC be distributed under DRM," a Kickstarter update on the situation reads. "This didn't come up earlier because the situation was complicated by the number of parties involved in the license and because the process was 'ongoing.'"

"Ultimately," it continues, "we were able to successfully negotiate an exception with Microsoft for us to provide our Backers with a DRM-free version of the Kickstarter rewards (specifically the game and the Berlin Campaign) but that exception does not extend to non-reward DLC. So unfortunately, we cannot sell or give away DRM-free versions of the game or DLC on stores like GoG, and that's why any future Shadowrun Returns DLC will only be available for purchase on Steam."

A table posted by Harebrained Schemes, illustrating the specific differences between the Steam and DRM-free versions of the game, has been embedded after the break.

[Thanks, Travis!]

Discord Games recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring its upcoming 2D "Metroidvania-styled" game Chasm to Windows, Mac and Linux. The developer plans to take its inspiration from games such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and The Legend of Zelda series to new heights by building procedurally-generated dungeons in six different areas into the game.

In Chasm, players will control a soldier that enters a mining town coping with a reawakened ancient evil force. Along the way, players will equip weapons and spellbooks, as well as learn new abilities to reach previously-inaccessible areas. The game will include both normal and hardcore difficulty modes, as well as leaderboards that track stats such as quickest times and damage taken.

Discord Games is seeking $150,000 in funding by May 12 to make Chasm a reality. The developer is already offering playable demo to fans, which is available to download through its Kickstarter page. The game is also on Steam's Greenlight service, awaiting fan approval to make it to the platform.

Unrelenting rain drums on the tin roof of the shelter. I huddle from the chill in my standard-issue trench coat, bathed in the cool glow of the data terminal. This is how every adventure game should begin. I guess there's room for other genres, but there's something comforting about the cold and dreary future of Wadjet Eye Games' Gemini Rue, the pixelated PC masterpiece now available on iOS. A dark and dangerous Blade Runner-esque future might not seem like the ideal destination for humanity, but I love the thought of once-sterile technology tarnished in the rain, fighting against nature for its place in the world. In a world where point-and-click adventure games have faded from their once dominant position in the PC gaming hierarchy to a niche genre, Wadjet Eye is doing a fine job of keeping the dream alive, while demonstrating the triumph of storytelling over visuals. You might remember them from Resonance, a glorious and complex tale-weaving. Or you might know them from Gemini Rue itself, in which case you're already excited about the mobile version. Using the classic two-character mechanic, Gemini Rue tells two interconnected tales at once. On one side of the galaxy we have ex-assassin Azriel Odin, a gruff and tough character who finds himself backed into a corner, forced to work with the criminal organization he abandoned in order to save someone close to him. On the other side we have hospital inmate Delta-Six, trapped in a strange testing facility that regularly wipes his mind. The two stories flirt with each other throughout the game, taking turns at first but eventually letting players swap between them at will. While not unraveling the intricately-woven plot through voiced dialogue or the odd gunfight, Gemini Rue is pure point-and-click adventure. Players touch the screen and hold to reveal interaction points in the hand-crafted scenes, with four choices of action — eye, mouth, hand and foot. Simple enough, but the correct path is not always readily evident, and players don't always have all the time in the world to figure puzzles out. Dramatic tension isn't a hallmark of the genre, but it's certainly a Wadjet Eye trademark. I can't recommend the iOS version of Gemini Rue enough. The entire, amazing PC game is at your fingertips (including developer commentary!) for a fraction of the PC price. Don't be left out in the cold. In the rain. Wearing a trench coat. From the future. Steam is chopping half off Arkane's Dishonored, bringing the price down to $29.99. The deal precedes next week's release of "The Knife of Dunwall," a new single-player add-on that explores a different assassin operating in parallel to the main game's plot.

In fiscally related news, Farming Simulator 2013 is also discounted by 50 percent to $13.99. Both deals have already started and they'll last through Monday morning.

Meanwhile, creepy indie charmer Limbo is on Steam sale for $2.50 until midnight.

Resident Evil: Revelations will feature a Season Pass to enable four unannounced DLC packs, a new pre-order deal on Steam reveals. The updated version of Revelations hits Steam on May 20, but the more people that buy it before the launch date, the more goodies everyone can enjoy, with three reward tiers unlocked by pre-order numbers.

Tier one is already unlocked, meaning everyone who pre-orders on Steam will get an art book and 13-song soundtrack when the game launches. Next up is tier two, a free copy of 2007's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition that Capcom will distribute shortly after that pre-order goal is reached. Tier three promises "more weapons and more characters" for Raid mode, with four pieces of additional content to be revealed after the game's launch, all part of the Season Pass.

There's no word yet if these pre-order bonuses apply to console versions of Revelations as well.

Oh, well this just won’t do at all. I was having a very nice day – frolicking in the bunny-infested fields and devising new ways to make game developers weep sincere, beautiful tears, as is my way – when the world decided to remind me that Shadowrun Returns exists, but it’s still not mine yet. Now I’m quite sad, and devs will have to bear the loathsome burden of their intrinsic, inescapable pain all alone. But I suppose I can’t be too pessimistic, given that I was snapped out of my willful cyberslumber by word of concrete Shadowrun Returns release details. First, the good news: it’s arriving in June, with Steam Workshop support straight out the gate. But wait, if it’s launching on Steam, what does that mean for all of Harebrained’s much-ballyhooed promises of being DRM-free? Well, it’s kinda complicated.
