Not so long ago, Gabe Newell sounded like he was dead-set on killing off Steam Greenlight, but still the rather obtuse game selection process persists. If nothing else, though, at least it’s not treading water. Say so long to a sludgy trickle of monthly additions, as Valve’s paving the way for a rapid-transit highway straight to the heart of the Greenlight system. From now on, it’ll greenlight more titles faster, but in smaller batches. And the first to benefit? How about surging (and completely marvelous) communist document thriller Papers, Please? Or, if that’s for some insane reason not to your liking, there’s also Edge of Space and ambitious, otherworldly action-RPG Venetica, in which you play as the daughter of Death Incarnate. Innnnnteresting.

By the time you're reading this, Stonehearth will in all likelihood have met its goal of $120,000, with 28 days left to go. If $200,000 is raised, Mac and Linux ports will be developed. Meanwhile, you can also vote for Stonehearth on Steam Greenlight.

Six years after its initial release, Adam Foster's acclaimed Half-Life 2 mod MINERVA has been re-released as a free "Director's Cut" version on Steam.

MINERVA is an atmospheric first-person adventure game in which players explore an underground Convent base with help from Minerva, an unseen companion character. The mod was impressive enough to land Foster a job at Valve, where he still works today. Friendly pressure from co-workers resulted in the game's eventual overhaul and Steam release.

Foster notes that the Director's Cut boasts "tweaked visuals, bug fixes, better puzzles and all kinds of subtle improvements." MINERVA is available as a free download, though it requires players to have Half-Life 2: Episode One installed in order to play it.

There’s no gameplay in this video for The Silent Enemy, the new game being made by the creators of Papo & Yo. But, as you watch the various staffers of Minority Media face the camera or talk about their roles in the game, you realize that there's a good reason that gameplay takes a backseat. Papo & Yo took the life experience of Minority’s Vander Caballero—growing up with an alcoholic dad—and made it into a poignant, playable fable. Silent Enemy has similar origins, spinning out of the teasing and harassment that creative director Ernest Webb endured because he grew up as the child of white and Cree aboriginal parents. But, the simple, silent acknowledgments echoed by his co-workers make it clear that The Silent Enemy might have something to say to anyone who’s ever been bullied. Or even more importantly, it might even talk to the people doing the bullying. The game will be debuting exclusively on the Ouya console some time in the near future.

This week, Steam is discounting a dozen different indie games. Stealth Bastard Deluxe, a fast-paced 2D stealth game from Curve Studios, is a tempting $4.99. Closure, the dark platformer from Eyebrow Interactive, is a mere $3.39 - definitely worth the pittance. Snapshot is also $3.39, a puzzle platformer from Kyle Pulver built upon an inventive photography mechanic.

Retrovirus is half-off at $10, a shooter where players guide a ship through a computer system to eradicate a virus. Turret-based strategy game Sol Survivor is next on the list, down to $2.49 for the remainder of the sale. Spark Unlimited's Legendary, a shooter based on the Pandora's Box myth, joins the sale soiree for $1.24; Nikopal: Secrets of the Immortals is also $1.24, a 3D adventure game set in France during the year 2023. BC Kings, also $1.24, is s a strategy game set in the stone age.

The final three games rounding out the list are: Puzzle Kingdoms for $3.74, a game from the creators of Puzzle Quest in very much the same vein; 4 Elements, a color-matching game from Playrix Entertainment set in a fantasy world, for $2; and Cave Story+ for $4.99, Nicalis' port of Daisuke Amaya's lauded platform-adventure game. All of these games are on sale until May 6 at 10am PT.

You may have played the Half-Life 2 mod Minerva when it was released a few years ago, but now it's back, and enhanced, and on Steam, and totally free. Minerva is the production of Adam Foster, a designer who got his current job at Valve by making the surreal mod. Says Foster (in an e-mail to Kotaku): It's taken long enough, but via lots of nagging and prompting from fellow Valve employees I've finally got round to getting MINERVA, the Half-Life 2 mod which got me a job at Valve, up on to Steam. It was originally released in late 2007 to pretty much universal acclaim, but now there's about to be a super-fancy Director's Cut edition with tweaked visuals, bug fixes, better puzzles and all kinds of subtle improvements. Nothing hugely new, just old stuff tidied and polished for this re-release.Expect the usual single-player shooting and puzzles, a healthy dose of mystery and plenty of on-screen dialogue from the unseen Minerva, who guides (and insults) you on your journey through a vast Combine underground facility. It requires Half-Life 2: Episode One as a base - but once you've got that, the mod adds quite a few hours of free, arguably Valve-quality gaming. You can check Minerva out on Steam right here. Because free games are awesome!
