Valve has previewed the second part of its master plan to upgrade Steam communities, today previewing a handful of changes coming to user groups.

Under the update, user groups will feature a group-specific discussion area and a new layout with better member visibility, making it "easier to see what a group is really about."

Groups can also affiliate themselves with their favorite games and set language settings, which Valve says will make finding groups of interest an easier endeavor. And no, you can't make a group professing your love for Half-Life 3 just yet. Valve isn't talking about it!

Release notes for 8/14 Update

Gameplay:
• Addressed recently reported performance issues.
• Living players can now hear the dead spectators in Casual game mode.

Effects:
• Improved muzzle flash dynamic light performace and optimized bullet hit impacts effects

UI:
• Added options to select the position of the steam toast notification.
• Fixed an issue with the Scoreboard where it was not showing a Tie or Loss properly.
• Fixed an issue where players were not getting updated in the Mini-Scoreboard.
• The Money HUD element now flashes more when it increases.
• The Scoreboard now allows you to view a player's profile.
• Updated the Alerts and Win panel spacing to match each other better.
• Updated the Win panel to be overall smaller and streamlined in all the states for modes.

Bug Fixes:
• Fixed an issue in the HUD player count where players who left or changed state quickly were not getting updated in the scoreboard as such.
• Updated the Play With Friends screen to enable the private/public toggle.
• Boot invites should now be accepted after the game loads from an invite click in steam message.
• Fixed description text for the Achievement: Awardist.
• Fixed server crash caused by taking environment (falling) damage while defusing.
• Fix for firing delay after weapon switching during a reload.
• Fix for cash awards not be applied properly for grenade kills.

Matchmaking:
• By default the input device is locked to keyboard and mouse.

Community Support:
• Fixed a bug where custom server map lists wouldn't populate if CT models werent specified. Server now sends information about slots, models, arms and maplist before serverinfo so that correct models could be loaded.
• When hashing the community server response we take into account game mode/type/numslots so that we rebuild extended kv when mode changes, but the map remains the same.
• Added commandline argument "-maxplayers_override" that, if exists, trumps any maxplayers values read from gamemodes files.
• Added -gamemodes_serverfile command line parameter that allows specifying a file other than the default gamemodes_server.txt
• Network stringtables will not be using dictionaries on community servers even if convar is enabled. This allows clients to actually download map since resources are referenced by strings and the client will not have the dictionary until they have the map.
• Client will defer .bsp file preload until after required resources are available. For the case of a missing map, this allows the client to reach signon state "new" and kick off downloader thread while retaining their spot on the server. This allows community servers to essentially run 3rd party maps that clients will download when played.

There are, believe it or not, a few drawbacks to growth at such a rapid rate that your fiscal reports probably include statements like “on track to consume the Earth – in a fashion not unlike that of Galactus, devourer of worlds – by late 2013.” For one, organization becomes really, really tricky. Infinite virtual shelves, as it turns out, can’t be tamed by a simple afternoon of taking inventory, so new solutions are needed. It is, then, nice to see Valve attempting to grab the reins of Steam’s Community functionality and steer it toward better usability – especially with Steam Greenlight on the way. Honestly, though, Steam – for all its community-oriented innovation and constant evolution – is still dropping the ball in some seriously important areas. That’s not to say I don’t love Steam, mind you. It is – warts and all – easily the best option out there. But, in the interest of encouraging Valve to do some more under-the-hood tweaks before resuming its Olympic-caliber sprint into The Future, let’s break down what else needs fixing.

Hotline Miami, Dennaton Games' over-the-top, top-down action game, is making housecalls this year on Steam, Get Games, and other unspecified PC download platforms. In addition, publisher Devolver Digital re-confirmed plans to put the games on consoles, though details have yet to be announced.

The trailer accompanying the news should ensure that you don't forget about the game until its release. The imagery is ... memorably violent. Yes, let's go with "memorably."

Valve is preparing an update for Steam, revealing a host of new features over the course of this week for Steam Community. The first feature revealed is Game Hubs, a kind of anchor that will present everything associated with a game on Steam in one convenient place.

Game Hubs will "highlight the most popular user-created screenshots, videos, and Steam Workshop items as rated by the community and combine it with related news, discussions, and comments for the game all in one central location," Valve PR rep Doug Lombardi says.

Each day of this week, a new feature as part of this update will be shown. Beta access for the new Steam Community section will be available "soon."

August 13, 2012--Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced a major update coming to the Steam Community.

This update focuses on highlighting and enabling the best user-created screenshots, videos, and Workshop items for games across Steam while making it easier for the community to discuss their favorite games.

Every game on Steam will have a new Game Hub. The Hubs highlight the most popular user-created screenshots, videos, and Steam Workshop items as rated by the community and combine it with related news, discussions, and comments for the game all in one central location.

"The New Steam Community is all about showing off the best content that gamers have created," says Emily Kent at Valve. "With over 89 million screenshots, videos, Steam Workshop maps, levels, mods, and items, plus news articles and product updates, the community has created an unbelievable wealth of content around their favorite games."

Steam is a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC and Mac games and digital entertainment, with over 40 million accounts around the world and over 2000 titles offered.

Check back each day (August 13-16th) for a preview of a new set of features at www.steamcommunity.com/communitycontent.

According to the folklore of our culture – relayed by minstrels sweetly crooning out their dulcet tones in the backs of taverns and also, like, every Hollywood movie ever – heroes always arrive just in the nick of time. So it shouldn’t be a problem for an academy‘s worth of medieval-themed do-gooders, right? You’d think so, but then Hero Academy‘s planned release date of August 8th came and went with nary a peep – even from Heavy weapons guy. Thousands of lives were lost. Better (slightly) late than never, though, and Robot’s provided a TF2-tinged launch trailer to make it official. Because things aren’t real until they have trailers.
