Fans of Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars, et al will certainly enjoy Pokémon Conquest, whilst newcomers to the genre are smoothly eased into the action.

With dozens of hours of content to get through after the 15-20 hour campaign, this is arguably the best copypasta of 'main game-to-spin-off' as you will ever see. The main series could learn a thing or a hundred from Pokemon Conquest.

With further downloadable episodes promised, Pokemon Conquest should keep you busy until the Pokemon Black and White 2 release date, and possibly beyond. It may be one of the most unlikely Pokemon spin-offs, but happily it's also one of the very best.

It's not over yet, either, with main-line sequel Pokémon Black & White 2 due out this October. Even without that, though, Conquest would be one super effective swansong.

For Pokemon and strategy fans alike this game is an excellent addition to any DS collection and hopefully we’ll get to play it’s successor on the 3DS at some point in the future.

Pokemon Conquest's strike team of cute critters and fictionalized warlords will attempt to take over the UK on July 27, Nintendo announced today.

The strategy game was designed by Tecmo Koei to initiate kids and other neophytes into Koei's complex strategy games. It just has the side effect of being basically the weirdest thing ever.

Pokémon Conquest is a game that no one asked for, but many will enjoy — fans of either series will be drawn in by the familiar and be taught to love what’s new.

The Good
Territory expansion and kingdom management are satisfying Plenty of precious Pokemon to collect Puts classic Pokemon themes in a new setting Gimmick-filled fighting arenas make for unique battles.

The Bad
Combat is far too slow-paced and easy Pokemon combat abilities are too limited Certain gameplay elements aren't explained well.

I hope this introduces the younger generation of Pokemon fans to more games in the genre in the same way that the original games introduced kids to RPGs. But beyond anything else, Pokemon Conquest is just plain fun.

#review Since the release of the first Pokémon role-playing game in 1996, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have attempted to capitalize on the success of the core series by overlaying its colorful cartoon characters on other genres. Thanks in no small part to the power of the brand, Pokémon pinball, puzzle, turn-based dungeon crawlers and more have all enjoyed at least a modicum of success. More »

#pokemon Collecting all the Pokémon in a normal installment of Nintendo's beloved role-playing series is a daunting enough task for your average game reviewer. Pokémon Conquest asks them to conquer an entire continent while they do it. Man, Nintendo, cut some critics a little slack. More »

You'll love
Addictive tactical gameplay
Complex strategy outside of battles
Despite cute characters, embraces deeper aspects of genre

You'll hate
Hours spent explaining all its eccentricities
Too obligated to Nobunaga series standards and practices
Sadly it couldn’t be a 3DS game

Pokémon Conquest takes the Pokémon you know and recognize (and love?) and places them into the world of tactical turn-based strategy with little kicking and screaming. Unfortunately, its simplicity will turn away tactical purists, and its complexity and management demands will turn off fans of the traditional Pokémon RPG.

Going into my interview with Pokemon Conquest director Hisashi Koinuma, the DS strategy game seemed like the most inscrutably random agglomeration of properties imaginable. I couldn't begin to imagine a reason anyone would think to merge Pokemon with Nobunaga's Ambition, a strategy game about real Japanese warlords.

Koinuma cut through the confusion without trouble, in an instant. "It would be nice if players would become interested in Nobunaga's Ambition," Koinuma said in response to my question about Conquest as a Nobunaga's gateway. "But as Tecmo Koei has created a lot of simulation titles, we wanted to introduce the genre of simulation games to children. It's not so much that we want them to start playing Nobunaga's Ambition as an entry point, but just as an entry point to the genre of simulation games."

Of course! It all makes perfect sense as a first strategy game to pull kids into the genre. "Especially in Japan," he continued, "the number of users of simulation games has really dropped over the years, so in order to keep people interested in that genre, we hope that kids would play this game and would take it as a suggestion of 'oh, simulation games are like this.' Then in the future they'd continue playing simulation games."

Koinuma believes that the hardcore nature of strategy/simulation fans leads the games to become ever more difficult and less accessible to attempt to satisfy said fans. "At the same time, there are people who want to start trying simulation games, well, now the games on the market are a lot more difficult, so it's a lot harder to learn how simulation games. Some new users are kind of turned off by the genre because it's too difficult."

ah, so it's just a ploy to get kids to play Nobunaga's Ambition

For those with an interest in either strategy games or RPGs, but not sold on the other, Conquest is the perfect introduction to both. Watching your Pokémon and warlords evolve is a rewarding experience that will keep you coming back for more.

A portion of a Siliconera review...

At times, Pokémon Conquest does feel like a Pokémon game dressed up in SRPG clothes with a smattering of Nobunaga’s Ambition. Admittedly, I’d been hoping for something more different and with a more solid plot, but on the other hand, the game feels so distinctly Pokémon that I can’t dislike it for its faithfulness. Besides, any game with Pokémon that introduces new ways to interact with the Pokémon themselves and does so well is a definite plus for me.
