This week, PlayStation Plus members can take to an ever-changing race track when Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed enters the Instant Game Collection. The ‘transformed’ part references the fact that your go kart isn’t always cemented to the pavement – if your route should all of a sudden require your little kart to, say, fly, it will. Yep, your vehicle is constantly morphing back and forth between kart, plane and boat, so you’ll have to master each type if you want to win.

You can download Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and take advantage of all these PS Plus discounts after the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, 12/24.

Sega fans will enjoy this solid port but it's far from a smooth ride. If you can stomach the rough edges this has enough individual character to stand alone.

Wondering just how many copies of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed were shipped? SEGA has revealed that 930,000 copies were moved across North America and Europe. Keep in mind that this is not a sold number, but a number of copies made available for purchase. This number doesn't include the 3DS version.

Not only have they made a good game but they’ve made a terrific Wii U version of the game. Playing by yourself will last a while and there’s endless fun with your friends both locally and around the world. Five player is so much better than just four.

The mixture of Sega and Sumo should have made for a game that was as accomplished as it was nostalgic. Instead, it's just a bit flat.

Why hello there, PS Vita owners! We heard you guys were hungry for an awesome multiplayer Vita racing game… and we’re here to deliver. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed hits PS Vita today, and we’re super-excited to share the game with all of you!

The game is out now both in stores and also on PlayStation Store. As you can probably guess, the game also isn’t your average kart racer. The reason we have that fancy “Transformed” in the name is because your vehicle is going to transform in every single race: from a car to a boat to a plane!

My last few blogs here revealed quite a few old school Sega fans, so it’s worth noting that the entire roster is essentially a love letter to gamers. Beyond your traditional Sonic cast, we’ve included the triumphant return of Vyse from Skies of Arcadia (a personal favorite of mine), Gilius from Golden Axe, NiGHTS, and many more. We’ve even got Wreck-it Ralph included as a playable character. (Don’t worry, though – he’s not going Turbo.)

One of the things I personally like most about the races is that “Transformed” doesn’t just apply to your vehicles. It applies to the tracks, too! Volcanoes will erupt, paths will get destroyed, and the terrain itself will change right in front of you, ensuring that every lap is something new and exciting. Add to that each track is based on a vintage Sega franchise or series from the last 20+ years, and you’ve got yourself some serious nostalgia stew cooking.

For PS Vita, the multiplayer features really bring the game together. Racing against friends (or rivals) in completely respectful (or heated and nerve-wracking) races is a ton of fun.

You can pick up the game now at most retail stores, and if you do so you’ll notice you get some bonus DLC content in there too – a little thanks from us to all those fans out there who pick up the game at launch to support it! The digital copy of the game will also come with this DLC, but it’s a limited time offer for both!

We’ve been off to a good start with reviews on PS Vita, so we hope you guys will enjoy it just as much as we do. Thanks for reading, and as always and if you have any questions, please feel free to post them below. Here’s to the launch of another great racing title for Vita owners!

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed retains trademark aspects of the karting genre, but also provides enough variation on it to be able to stand side-by-side with Nintendo's eventual Mario equivalent.

...even with the characters feeling pretty samey, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed does a lot to keep your attention. While there’s a ludicrous amount of stuff going on in each stage mechanically, they’re also charmingly devoted to Sega history.

This is from a GamerHub review for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed...

Because of these errors, this version of the game is the weakest in the bunch. That said, it's still a good racing time in some areas, particularly if you've got friends you wish to race against, or just want to see how an After Burner-inspired track fares.

Somebody got me this as a gift. I hadn't really planned on getting it, but I decided to try it out. And I'm really glad that I didn't miss out on this one.

Gameplay: 8/10

The races themselves are amazing. Everything, including transformations and terraforming, flows together smoothly for a nice, clean race. Air and ground controls are excellent, but boating is a bit touchy. In addition, all of the offensive items are grossly overpowered, which can really drag down a race. An improvement over the first one comes from the fact that the all star is no longer a beat-all killing machine, just a temporary speed boost and a regular strength attack.

Soundtrack: 10/10

Wonderful.

Voice acting: 7/10

The voice acting for this game is high quality stuff. The problems arise from the fact that it gets awfully repetitive, especially when you play as Danica Patrick (okokokokokokokokok).

Graphics: 9/10

The environments are gorgeous. There are a few hiccups, but it's still great.

Final rating: 8/10

Yes, it's not very detailed. Sue me.

While the difficulty spike may be a bit too high for novice gamers, it will actually serve as inspiration for the dedicated fans to keep playing. Transformed is a great value, and will offer gamers, especially Sega fans, hours of entertainment mixed with a hearty dose of nostalgia.
