I (and any other programmers who join up as time goes on) will be using this thread to keep you informed on the progress of coding the system. I am creating this thread now because I have just rigged a basic concept of the thread system this evening:

http://nerr.g33k.org.uk/posts.php

It is exceedingly ugly, doesn't allow for posting yet, and certainly doesn't include any items or battling, but it does have the core, tree-based post code down, and the basics of the database hidden behind it. Click around and see how it functions, and let me know if this is the kind of thing people had in mind for the posting system.

Also, as time goes on I will be adding more pages to that subdomain as the general Nerr 3.0 testing ground. I'll keep you informed of updates as they happen.

Update 21/7/2012:

I've just finished the proof of concept for the battle system. It's a little different to some of the plans in the other thread since I started it before those were laid out, but I can tweak it if necessary.

http://nerr.g33k.org.uk/battle.php

I've populated the database with an initial set of items (including one marked as not a combat weapon, but that's for internal testing and later stuff and can't be used in this test) which you can use to experiment with the battle system. The system doesn't make a difference between attacker and defender - both users attack at the same time and the loser takes damage.

The type of weapon (Attack, Defence or Trap) determines whether or not the attack hits through a rock-paper-scissors system. The power is the base damage of the weapon. The element determines the final damage against the loser in the same way as the type, with a chance to double the base power, halve it, leave it unchanged or do no damage entirely. In a real fight each user wouldn't be able to see the other's weapon until the round completes, making it a game of luck and strategy to win the fight.

Have a play and see what you think. If people want extra items to toy with, let me know the stats and I can add them easily enough.

Nice Gold! That's pretty cool! I don't really see a problem with it.
Lord Crump
i'd program for nerr 3.0 if i wasn't so busy with professional stuff of my own
i'd make everything in unity, the best game engine ever

try it out on the nerrchat page http://digibutter.nerr.biz/pages/chat or directly at http://nerr.biz:8080 for a litlte more space.

Todo list:

  • Flip the opened topic dialog so oldest posts are at the top
  • auto linkify/embed urls
Nastasia
i'm not ok with this
first of all you can't just make digibutter one huge chatroom basically (yes i know you can reply to certain posts but hold on), it would be a huge downgrade from being able to have full topics where you can write as much as you want without breaking the board and have images and and more options than just reply. second of all this removes all the other features we have on the board right now
please tell me you are going to add a LOT more to this before you make it official
Fortran
yeah francis do something. It's coming along nice but still needs improvement.

There would be more activity (but also potential spam/abuse issues). If someone posts for a while without creating an account, there is a good chance they will eventually create one. Better than nothing, right? It has worked well for the cbox.

Fortran
Possibly. This site is too obscure to let that get bused very much anyway. But I don't suggest it globally, maybe some boards don't allow anonymous posts, and maybe have the option of allowing anonymous posts in a thread you make. In addition i think we've been suggesting a lot of options for how you want your post to work. I sort of subtly suggested adding tags to the end of your post to do that, but I think I'll outright suggest it now. Better than a million checkboxes.
Nastasia
i actually agree with shadoo and crump for once. perhaps you could even do it for whole boards.

that topic was way too big and we can't get shit agreed on so let's just keep it in one post and edit the post when we want to change something so we're all on the same page

Each new user starts with 100 HP, 10 MP, 10 coins
A user can post up to five times per day to get a coin
(Restrictions may apply: not in the same topic, not within 5 minutes of each other, not deleted post)
Item or item parts may be found with site use, browsing, posting
At least one post (Or similar must be made before finding items)
Cannot find more items until current items are claimed
Items can damage, heal, or absorb HP, MP, inflict status, affect Digi forums
Examples:
Poison Mushroom: -10 HP
Green Potion: +10 MP
Dizzy Dial: Confusion status (Chance for attack to fail)
Searchlight: bring it back francis

Item Parts can be applied to a base item, which can be bought
More expensive / rare base items can hold more item parts
Different varieties (Equip, defense, attack, support)

-----

BASE ITEM: Bomb
Item slots: 2
Base damage: 5
Conditions: None

ITEM PART: Boo Fang (1 use)
Half damage returned as health
ITEM PART: Fire Spices (3 uses)
20 damage + Fire Attribute

Bomb that does 25 fire damage, 12 HP returned
Fire Spices can be applied to 2 more items

-----

Defense items: When attacked, the item in your defense queue reacts
Fire Shield - Negates 50 points of fire damage, 25 neutral
Boo's Sheet - 50% chance of avoiding attack
Reflector - Half damage taken is dealt back to opponent
(Items may not be as overpowered as this. These will probably be rarer.)
(Items may disappear after a certain amount of uses or damage)

------

Equip items: Increase stats, prevent status, give abilities
Defense Plus - Decrease damage by 2
HP Up - Increase HP by 10
Life Shroom - Auto-revive when killed
Black Bean - Chance for poison to be inflicted against attacker

-----

HOW BATTLES / ITEM-USING WORKS

Somebody uses an item on you or attacks you. Your defense queue reacts. The opponent cannot attack again until you have chosen an action. You can choose to do nothing or take a turn against your opponent. You may use an item back on your opponent, in which the rounds would continue going on until one of you gives up, dies, or you reach an agreement / trade / bribe.

-----

Elements
Water -> Fire -> Air -> Earth?
Fire <-> Ice | Thunder <-> Water
Fire = Water = Earth = Whatever
(Do we really need elemental triangles if characters aren't augmented? If anything, the character could just inherit an elemental weakness under a status or something.)a

Super-Claus
you know I was pretty much saying exactly this the other day, so yeah I'm on board
Super-Claus
yeah those work great

Terrible MSPaint logos may (will) be subject to change.

Before we can actually make this thing, we need to decide exactly what we want from it and how. This means compiling a list of features people want from the new system, as well as when and where those features should be implemented. This includes:

  • What should be conserved from the current system?
  • What should not be conserved?
  • What new features should be added?
  • What should the layout of the system be like (e.g. should it look like the existing layout, or should it be closer to the board-based style of Old Digi)?

Once we've sorted out these questions, then we can move on to actually making something that doesn't completely suck. Additionally, I need people to list what they are able to help with (code, graphics, management etc.) so I know who can do what once we start building the system.

Francis
My plan is to make the site more cbox-like. There will be just one simple text box.
By default, your post is a reply to the current topic (whatever the last person posted) unless you specify to start a new topic. If you only care about one specific topic, you can open the thread in a new window or pop-up.
This would also allow for topics to have sub-topics.
Links are auto-embeded (images, videos, etc)
Fortran
hey Gold if you're doing that post gives you a random part thing don't forget to limit it to one or two parts per day so children don't spam the forum trying to grind.
