One of gaming's favorite pastimes: "What if" scenarios involving Final Fantasy VII. What if they actually made a next-gen version that looked like Advent Children? What if Square hadn't defected to the PlayStation? What if Aeris didn't have to die and instead was real and we were in love and got married?

Of course, only slightly less popular is the "What if Final Fantasy VII came out ten years earlier and was 8-bit" scenario. We're pretty sure someone already did the actual work of porting the game over to the Famicom (thanks, Shenzhen Nanjing Technology Co, Ltd!) but in case you missed that, take a gander at Martin Barreby's non-interactive reimagining after the break. Sure, some of the art looks like it's cut from a fanfic and the gameplay actually looks worse than 1987's Final Fantasy 1, but it's "just a small project with not that much effort put into it" says Barreby, so lay off.

Next: What if Cloud's sword and hair were subject to the same laws of gravity that we are?

: So I bought The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom on XLBA. It is seriously almost exactly like Braid, but the gameplay is suprisingly a hell of a lot more fun. I don't know what it is, but it seems a lot more challenging and rewarding. Also pie.

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase recently gave what appears to be the final word on the possibility of a FFVII remake during an interview with TechDigest. "If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together," Kitase explained, "so it's looking pretty unrealistic!"

Ultimately, the chances of a remade FFVII getting developed are slim, but not non-existent. "If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we'd very much like a go at it," Kitase said. So, there you have it. If you want to see Cloud Strife in HD, all you have to do is recruit and bankroll a gargantuan Square Enix development team. Piece of cake!

FFVII is a good game, but why do people want the game remade? its not the "best" imo. to write an article like this is even more proof that Square is milking it too much.

even if it wasn't, saying it would take too long means they are just lazy.

quite awhile. I really don't think that FFXIII is going to be the game to reignite that flame, and it is kinda bumming me out that I would rather sit down and plug in my PS2 than even toy with the thought of getting something new.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot fo what Western companies have been doing recently. I loved Mass Effect 2 even if the ending was kind of a bust, and with some polish the new Fallout series could change gaming in big way.

But still, I'm a sucker for Japanese "gamey" game design. I really *crag*ing love Bayonetta even if it isn't as engauging as a lot of other games. Bayonetta's problem lies entirely in the non-game aspects. When ti comes to gameplay, it just cannot be *crag*ing beat.

The last time I remember enjoying a game completely and in all aspects was Persona 4. That was just a bitchin' ass mother *crag*ing game.

I'm really starting to think that the industry is suffering as a whole from the shooter obssession. Every *crag*ing studio is making a shooter, no one is triyng anything new outside of small stage venues like XBLA and Steam.

I can understand why of course, but no progress is going to be made if we keep making the same *crag*ing games over and over. Sure there is the aspects of scale and characterization that a first person perspective can bring, but I think games like Persona and Mass Effect have proven you can have those same experiences without zooming in.

Sure you'll always have your odd Batman or Dragon Age, but it's a far cry from resestablishing the genres.

Let's look at what the, arguably, the best games of the last two years were.For most people, those were Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, and some less frequent praise towards Batman Arkham Asylum. One of the five is not a shooter (Batman), and the only other one that couldn't technically be categorized into the Shooter genre (MGS4) focused on the shooting aspects above all else in terms of gameplay.

Come to think of it, MGS4 was probably the last time people really ralleyed around a Japaense game.

Look, my point is that this shit is just getting stale.

I'm sure I'm the only one who shares this view though, so whatever I don't really care.

A popular tab is a good idea. I also intend to show who liked the post, not just the number. Likes could also be used to "bookmark" a post, as soon as I let you view a list of your likes.
