During PAX 2009, we stopped by Valve's booth to chat with Chet Faliszek, one of the leading minds behind Left 4 Dead 2. Read on for insight into the differences between Left 4 Dead and its upcoming sequel, the possibility of user-created levels on Xbox 360 and just what's possible with the L4D2 editing tools: So, you guys have talked about fleshing out the story in Left 4 Dead 2 a bit more, and having a more involved plot. How do you do that with a game like this? I think that's one of those "I'm just going to ask you to wait and see." Some of it is simply ... Left 4 Dead 1's world was at the same stage every place you went. The infection had been there for a little bit. This time we're seeing what it's like to be in a city before the infection hits. And you see different people's reaction to that, as you cross around the country, and there's some other bits we tie in with the original Left 4 Dead in Left 4 Dead 2 as well.

Microsoft has unveiled it's Tokyo Game Show 2009 lineup and, as usual, we've got a selection of expected blockbusters sprinkled with games catered to the Japanese market. And Infernal: Hell's Vengeance is there for some reason, too. Some of the big games that will be playable include Assassin's Creed 2, Halo 3: ODST, Lost Planet 2, Bayonetta, Tekken 6 and Forza 3. Playable XBLA games will include Bomberman Live Battlefest, Raystorm HD, 0 Day Attack on Earth and ... Shadow Complex. Naturally, there will be some RPGs and some established Japanese franchises on the floor as well, including Front Mission Evolved, End of Eternity (a.k.a. Resonance of Fate), Nier Gestalt, Ninety-Nine Nights 2 and more. There will also be some video-only showings, including Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Halo Legends and others. We're not sure if any of the videos will be new, but there's bound to be surprise or two. Head over to IGN for the full lineup.

It appears that Best Buy's pre-order bonus for Brütal Legend comes a bit sooner than at other retailers. Handing over cash for the game before its Rocktober 13 release nets folks the attractive Brütal Legend LP sleeve seen above. Aside from displaying artwork, the sleeve serves as a holder for the game disc itself when, for some reason, it's not in your console.Unfortunately, the official Brütal Legend blog doesn't list Best Buy among the retailers who are offering the free in-game guitar and early demo access. As such, we've asked EA for more information on the Best buy deal and will update this post when we hear more.[Thanks, Kyle!] [Image credit]

Because both games involve flying feet, get it? Anyhway, Major Nelson has informed the masses that both Virtua Fighter 5 and FIFA Street 3 have landed on Xbox Live's Games on Demand service. As usual, both games are only available in certain regions. Virtua Fighter 5 is confined to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, while FIFA Street 3 is available everywhere except Austria, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan. Also as usual, pricing varies by region, so check your local listings. You may find yourself wondering just how companies decide which regions get their games. We're convinced that Microsoft has set up a giant Velcro map, next to which is kept a bucket of tennis balls. Granted, we have no proof to back up this theory, but we're almost positive it's the truth.

Hopefully the decision to ship JU-ON: The Grudge on Rocktober October 13 -- as revealed by Nintendo -- won't prove an unlucky one for publisher XSEED. Yes, the game will be met at retail by the likes of Brütal Legend and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but the "haunted house simulator" possesses something those games don't (we think): The ability to kill you one week after you play it. Oh, wait -- that was the tape from The Ring, wasn't it? Still, JU-ON will probably manage to scare up some sales.

As usual, Nintendo's lineup announcement contains stuff that has never been announced before, no doubt sending publishers scrambling to get their own press releases ready -- including Nintendo! We now have dates for exciting third-party games like Space Invaders Extreme 2 (October 20) and A Witch's Tale (October 6), and Phantasy Star Zero (November 10). But Nintendo also revealed several DSiWare titles for the first time! The company will follow this week's Art Academy with Art Academy: Second Semester on September 28, followed in Q4 by a DSiWare version of the bit Generations title Digidrive. We're interested in seeing whether Skip takes over or whether Pixeljunk developer Q-Games remakes its GBA game.In other DSiWare news, the Electroplankton titles are due out in Q4, as is Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon, which we don't know anything about, Sparkle Snapshots, Picturebook Games: The Royal Bluff, and -- this is going to freak iPhone gamers out -- Fieldrunners!

With some incredibly brutal reviews to its name, Darkest of Days has to work extra hard to sway consumers with a new Xbox Live demo. It appears the game's time-traveling protagonist, tasked with saving certain people for the sake of history, has little to work with outside of a fun premise. Is using modern weaponry during the American Civil War as fun as you'd expect it to be? Don't let us stop you from finding out! (Spoiler: it isn't)Queue up the Darkest of Days demo

The Wiimake of Castlevania: The Adventure for Game Boy that was recently rated by the ESRB is totally happening, but it wasn't Konami that took the lid off the coffin. Nintendo confirmed the game today as Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, and gave it a release timeframe: Q3 2009. Holy water! That's pretty much now! We've put in word to Konami in hopes of staking nailing down a more specific date.

Though it fails to offer a precise date, Nintendo's packed holiday release schedule has confirmed a November debut for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the frigid re-imagining of the PlayStation survival-horror classic. GameStop, which is currently offering a Silent Hill soundtrack CD as a pre-order incentive, expects the game to arrive on November 3rd. According to producer Tomm Hulett, "If you've played the PlayStation game to death, you still have no idea what to expect for Shattered Memories." Oh, and definitely don't expect Dahlia to be a robot in this one. We made sure about that.

Nintendo Power: November 2009 Rumors of a followup to GBC title Shantae have been bandied about for a couple of years now, but it would seem as though we finally have official word courtesy of the new Nintendo release list. Sadly the listing on the platformer's sequel is light on details. We know it's coming to DSiWare, that it's called Shantae: Risky's Revenge and that it's being developed by WayForward for a Q4 release. And that's it. What's that? You've never heard of Shantae? well, we can rectify that right now. [Update: And, just like that, we've got our first look at Shantae's DSiWare release, thanks to the upcoming November issue of Nintendo Power. Go Nintendo has a sneak preview of the mag, which promises "six pages of EXCLUSIVE pics!"]

A Nintendo press release promoting the company's holiday lineup has confirmed a December 7 release date for Link's next Nintendo DS-based outing, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. That's just in time for the cold, harsh winter -- but it's still quite a ways off. We suggest playing through Phantom Hourglass while watching reruns of Thomas the Tank Engine in order to tide yourself over until then. If you're not familiar with the Spirit-ed, Hylian adventure, check out our hands-on impressions of the game from E3 earlier this year, or watch the debut GDC trailer!

If Halo 3: ODST's campaign is "Combat Distilled," then its co-op multiplayer mode, Firefight, is the product of the same process, further refined. Firefight is combat distilled, then filtered; then distilled again and again. While the story mode can already be played cooperatively with up to four players (with or without scoring enabled), Firefight re-purposes eight of the sets from the campaign missions into closed, gladiatorial arenas where the odds are heavily stacked in the Covenants' favor. It's not a complicated formula. We've seen Gears of War 2 similarly extract itself into Horde Mode, as well as a number of other recent shooters spinning off their core gameplay elements into various arcade-like challenges. In all, Firefight contains ten maps (two are featured twice as night and day versions with slightly varied ingredients), and three of the ten are unlocked through campaign progression; though anyone can play on a locked map, so long as the match host has unlocked it. Likewise, except for the Rookie, character skins are unlocked through campaign play. (Sgt. Johnson will be a bonus skin for ODST pre-orderers.) Firefight lives on the campaign disc (separate from "vanilla" Halo 3 multiplayer; contained on a second disc), and players are bound to the limitations of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper: non-rechargeable health, no dual-wielding, and so on. You're no Spartan.

XSEED announced the release date for the localized version of RIZ-ZOAWD, now more sensibly (but less intriguingly) titled The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road. Players will be rolling Dorothy and co. around the land of Oz with a virtual trackball starting September 29. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about that date is that it isn't Spring 2010.Beyond the Yellow Brick Road combines the Oz setting and characters with a JRPG design, resulting in something that is, well, really weird.
