UK residents who shop at GAME will be wandering around in the dark this November when Modern Warfare 2 hits store shelves. Rather than getting the night vision goggle-equipped 'Prestige Edition' like way cooler UK retailer HMV, those who shell out £119.99 for the 'Veteran Edition' will receive the 12-inch statue of returning Modern Warfare character Captain "Soap" MacTavish you see above. At £30 more for freakin' night vision goggles, a statue (albeit a nice one) might be a hard sell for those already investing more than double the cost of the game. If you're gonna go crazy, why not just go all the way crazy?[Via Eurogamer]

Anyone see Kanye in the house? Phew. Moving on: This week's -- uninterrupted -- Rock Band Weekly announcement is headlined by Pearl Jam's Backspacer album. The new tracks will appear on Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 on September 20, 22 and 24, respectively. Also, a special edition of the Backspacer album at Target stores, which releases September 20, will have a code to download the album onto Xbox 360 and PS3. (Remember, it's only the "special edition" that'll have the code.)Check out the track list, along with the update for Rock Band Unplugged, after the break. With features like "16 player online multiplayer" and "simultaneous space and ground combat," Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron sounds like it should be on one of the current-gen consoles. But no, LucasArts is adamant about keeping the franchise on the handhelds, even going so far as to creating a DS version. We know what to expect from the PSP version, considering it's simply an upgraded version of the previous PSP-exclusive Battlefront. But what about the DS version? This video reveals some gameplay footage, and it looks drastically different from other incarnations of the franchise. The camera has been changed to a more top-down view, providing a much more fast-paced and arcade-like experience. The game is limited to just four players on the DS version, but a LucasArts producer insists that "the soul of Battlefront has been brought to Nintendo DS in a brand new way." We're wondering if, after watching the footage above, you agree.

This week Bobby Kotick established himself as the Bond villain of the video game world with his remarks about "[taking] all the fun out of making video games," and encouraging a corporate culture of "skepticism, pessimism, and fear."Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward seems to have received the message loud and clear, though its own manifestation of that culture may not be what Kotick had in mind as he ranted. NeoGAFfer Full Recovery noticed custom class names called "Skepticism," "Pessimism, and "Fear" on the projector during this week's Modern Warfare 2 event. We went back to our own photos from the event, and there it is! We're glad to see that the developers of the potential "best selling title of all time" aren't afraid of Kotick. Or at least that they're unafraid enough to sneak a furtive joke or two. It's still probably all "yes, sir," and deep bowing when Kotick makes an appearance in the office.

Square has not one, but two Nier games in the works: one for Xbox, and one for PS3. Nier Replicant is being developed exclusively for PS3, and looks somewhat different from its Gestalt counterpart. Both games feature a white-haired protagonist named Nier, but Replicant's lead is a younger, slimmer and a bit more effeminate than the 360's lead character. Both stories have our hero(es) on a journey to save a family member: in Replicant, it's a sister, while in Gestalt, it's a daughter. We're not entirely sure why Square Enix deemed it necessary to create two same-but-different versions of Nier for the two consoles. This new trailer does state that "peering into the mirror reveals yet another tale," so perhaps Square Enix fans will have to buy both versions of the game to get the whole story. We can't wait!

Walking around the streets of Akihabara, you'd be hard pressed to find a copy of Tales of Vesperia for PS3. Why? The game has sold over 140,000 units in one day, according to initial reports from Japan. Already, that's more than the first month of sales for the original Xbox 360 version, and nearly equal to the lifetime sales for that version. The promise of added content and being on a system that Japanese people actually own both contributed favorably to Namco Bandai's sales. While Namco Bandai must be pleased with the money they're raking in (from yesterday's sales, and from Microsoft), they have yet to announce a US release for Vesperia PS3. We think there are a lot of new PS3 owners that would love to check out the game on Sony's console.

The PSP Go may not be able to play UMD games, but it will be able to ... um, tell you more about ESRB ratings? SCEA is doing its part to educate consumers about the video games ratings board by including an ESRB app on each and every PSP Go system. Considering most of us are already familiar with the ratings system, this move is simply to target ignorant parents. "If you don't need it, you can delete it," SCEA's Jeff Rubenstein reminded readers of the PlayStation.blog.While this small gesture won't sell any systems, it is a good step in the right direction. If all future consoles come with more information about the ESRB, it further cements the organization's credibility, and avoids potentially messy government regulation (as evidenced by Australia's latest debacle). However, we're sure that many of you will join us in deleting the app from the system on day 1.

Brutal Legend's upcoming Rocktober release is nearly at hand, marking this new episode of "Brutal Thoughts" one of the last. This latest episode feels more phoned in than others, with Jack Black simply talking about roadies, and why they're genetically different from the rest of humanity. Perhaps it's just us, but testicular punchlines (ed: ouch) just don't cut it (ed: ouch, again) with us anymore.
