2004: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy comes to an end (winning 11 Academy Awards in the process), John Kerry runs for US President and whales explode. Oh, and Gran Turismo 4 releases on PS2. Five years later, the public is finally able to get their hands on Gran Turismo 5 with the first non-Prologue demo. The downloadable demo will be available on both the European and American PSN on December 17th. In Europe, the demo will allow players to enter the "GT Academy Time Trial" contest, in which the top 20 players from select countries will be eligible for a chance to enter the GT Academy. The GT Academy training program will prepare the ultimate GT fan to compete in the European GT4 Cup in a real race-spec Nissan 370Z. In America, the winner of the time trial will get a trip to the Indianapolis 500. Sure, these are tantalizing grand prizes -- but we're more excited to see that GT5 is becoming a real game. Now, how about a release date? Source - GT Academy 2010 Launches December 17th - PlayStation.Blog.EuropeSource - PlayStation.com - GT5 Time Trial Rules

We bet you were really hoping to not spend an extra five dollars today. We're sure you thought to yourself that you've got plenty of games to play and, honestly, what could you buy with five bucks anyway? The answer: Worms 2: Armageddon on Xbox Live Arcade. The good people at CheapCollegeGamers have uncovered a pair of great deals on Amazon. First and foremost, Worms 2 is available for a paltry $5, fifty percent off the usual $10 price tag. If you don't have it already, it would be crazy not to buy it at that price. Amazon is also offering Puzzle Quest: Galactrix at a discounted price of $10, half of the normal $20 cost. Granted, it's not quite as easy to recommend Galactrix as Worms 2, but $10 is a much more palatable price. Now go buy Worms 2. Since the launch of the PSP Minis digital platform alongside the PSP Go back in October, Sony has showed little more than a passing interest in promoting its bite-sized game service. From a decent chunk of games at launch to barely a whisper since, we've been wondering when the company would show more support for Minis. If what we're hearing from a handful of reliable sources is true, though, then we'll be seeing the PSP Minis finally getting some attention in the near future -- as they become playable on the PlayStation 3. "Before Christmas" says one source (and confirmed as "this month" by others independently), with allegedly the entire selection of Minis (and presumably upcoming releases) to be playable on PlayStation 3 consoles -- and with a resolution bump to boot. We asked Sony for comment and got the "We don't comment on rumor or speculation" line, so for now we'll have to leave it in the rumor department. But hey, we'll find out soon enough either way, right?

You may be nearing the end of your assassinating adventures with Ezio in Assassin's Creed II. But, what are you supposed to do as you agonizingly wait for the upcoming DLC? Make your own AC2 adventures in PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet, of course! The LBP Ezio costume will be available today on the PlayStation Store worldwide for £1.59 / €1.99 / US $1.99 / AUS $ 3.45 / NZD $3.90. Unfortunately, this costume set doesn't include any hidden wrist blades, so you'll have to make do with slapping your friends silly.PlayStation Home's offering is a little less adventurous. The virtual Mall will feature "Renaissance costumes pulled straight from 15th Century Italy." In other words, you can dress like a courtesan (essentially, a fancy way for saying "prostitute"). Once again, no lethal weapons will be included, so instead of killing, you'll have to make do with ... um, dancing.Source - Assassin's Creed II Costume - LittleBigPlanetSource - This Week in PlayStation Home - PlayStation.Blog

A portion of a Diehard GameFAN review… Just Dance is a horrible and shallow game that barely functions in the manner it is supposed to. The motion detection only works about a third of the time, and the instructions at the bottom for what move you are supposed to do next are often out of sync [...]

I’m actually surprised to see The Conduit pull out ahead of MPT and CoD in some of those numbers. I’d love to get an official total on just how many units The Conduit has sold worldwide. The 500k mark seems like it would be a great milestone for a new I.P., but I’m [...]

What does 15 years of PlayStation look like? Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has opened a brand new site celebrating the legacy of the PlayStation platform, featuring a timeline of Sony's major gaming hardware releases, beginning with the launch of the original Japanese PlayStation on December 3rd, 1994. Sony's handheld holds a majority of those dotted events, with every version of the PSP (from the 1000 to the Go) represented. The "15" year logo is a fun potpourri of various accessories released throughout the brand's history. In addition to SingStar microphones and Buzz! controllers, you can see Sony playing homage to UMD, PocketStation and rubber ducks -- stars of the initial tech demos for both PS2 and PS3.[Thanks, tmacairjordan87]

The wait to try out Sega/Platinum Games' over-the-top, demon/angel-slaying action title Bayonetta is finally over. The demo for the title is the highlight of this week's European PSN update, joined by a whole bunch of DLC for Fight Night Round 4, an Ezio Auditore costume for LittleBigPlanet and roughly 17,000 Rock Band tracks. That's just a quick estimate, but we think it should be pretty accurate. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

"I'm not saying it's going to happen tomorrow, but in the way that Activision sort of alternates sequels of Modern Warfare and Call of Duty and owns the leadership position in FPS [first-person-shooter], between Medal of Honor and Battlefield, I want it back," EA CEO John Riccitiello boldly declared in an interview with Kotaku. This means war. With the Call of Duty franchise growing into a $3-billion juggernaut, it's no surprise to see EA looking to topple Activision's bulging beast and reap the significant rewards. According to Riccitiello, the newly rebooted Medal of Honor and March's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 represent a strategy of "innovation and quality," one he suspects is bolstered by DICE's multiplayer expertise. "We think we've got an advantage over Modern Warfare 2 with our multiplayer," he suggested. "The guys at DICE do that really, really well."So, you think the console wars are intense? Just wait until you see the war ... wars.

While we wait for the real, official announcement we so desperately need to hear from Square Enix, another hint has been dropped about a Western release for Dragon Quest IX. Square Enix has filed a series of trademarks for the phrase "Sentinels of the Starry Skies" in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German (search for trademark #008724528 on the EU trademark database to see the English application for yourself). The phrase corresponds closely to the Japanese subtitle of Dragon Quest IX, Hoshizora no Mamorubito ("Defenders of the Starry Sky"). The publisher could be waiting to get its other big RPG out the door before saying anything. It previously noted that if it does localize the DS game (which it will!) it'll be in the next fiscal year, which starts in April.
