“For just the current generation home consoles (PS3/360/Wii), 2009’s release quantities increase the total availability of games to consumers by 55 percent. Unless retail shelf space grows by the same amount–and it isn’t–than the retail shelf life for an average game decreases dramatically. Additionally, each year there are at least 50 games that achieve [...]

How bad do Earthbound fans want to play the cancelled Earthbound 64? Well, one has gone so far as to recreate the town of ‘Tazmily’ from Earthbound 64 using Super Mario 64’s engine. Obviously, the recreation isn’t spot on, but it’s a pretty damn good job!

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just launched a new website catered to parents looking for tips and tutorials on safe gaming for younger players. PS-PlaySafeOnline.com includes explanations of the PS3's parental control settings function, security features for registered PSN Online IDs, and advice on what to do when faced with online jerks. The entire site is wrapped around a strange (and way too cheery) Egg-man character, who seems to waver been non-threatening and subversively creepy. Our only real gripe? There is no glossary term for PlayStation Home's "Quincying" phenomenon. Everyone must be warned.

Rock Band DLC is taking some time off for the holidays, with no tracks scheduled for release until December 29 on Xbox 360 and Wii, and January 7 on PS3. Take the time to reflect on the tracks you do have, and appreciate time spent with them this holiday season. When Rock Band DLC does return, it''ll bring a seven-pack of songs from the Rock Band: Country disc, followed by a three-pack of live Paul McCartney songs from his performance at New York's Citi Field. Check the list after the break, and then you can forget about all that other garbage you've downloaded!

Are you shocked? Probably not, considering we all knew Final Fantasy XIII would make a killing during the initial week of its release. However, the magnitude of the game's success was still a little alarming. Within its first day on the market, it broke one million units, becoming the best-selling PS3 game in Japan. According to Media Create, the game had reached 1,501,964 units by the end of the week, which more than doubled the life-to-date totals of the platform's previous bestseller, Metal Gear Solid 4. It did so in just four days. Great googly moogly! As you also might have expected, these unprecedented sales also boosted PS3 sales in the region for the week. The platform's sales leaped, much like a gazelle would leap, from 75,086 units sold to 237,086 units (an increase of 215.75 percent). That's an impressive upshot -- but we're not sure it deserves any gibberish exclamations.

We're beyond last-minute gift recommendations at this point, so we'll just assume selfish motivations behind any desire to purchase Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles today. The good news is that if you'd like to indulge that selfish desire, it'll only run you $29.77 today. Amazon knocked about $20 off the price of the Wii rail shooter, which features settings and characters from Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica, as its Deal of the Day. The game just came out in November! We're tempted to call it a Christmas miracle -- though maybe we'll save that declaration for when something is discounted to $20.

Dolphin has been in a few Atari collections over the years, having graced a Nintendo platform or two. I actually remember Dolphin as one of the better old-school Atari games. I mean, don’t expect it to wow you today, but back in the day this sucker was a step above other games. [...]

I still can’t get over the low amount of time with House of the Dead: Overkill. I mean, I know this game is definitely the shortest of the entire collection, and it doesn’t have any online play to increase replayability, but I thought the overall quality of the game would have people playing more [...]

Mom Brain put wrestling action-figures all over our Christmas tree, and they actually stayed their for a few days. Now we have the traditional trimmed tree, with one lone Super Mario Galaxy ornament. I think the tree above is a bit more fun than mine.

Could I sit down and play Goldeneye right now? I don’t know the answer to that. I think the controller and framerate might cause some issues for me, but I’ll be damned if I still haven’t found a first-person shooter that ranks up to the fun I had with Goldeneye. Maybe it’ll [...]

A portion of a Dtoid review… The old school charm quickly wears off and gives way to a game that simply does not want you to have fun. It’s absolutely tragic, because I was just starting to really get into it before the game basically slammed the door in my face and said “f@#$ off”. Full review [...]
