Europe will be able to download the ModNation Racers beta on January 21st when the EU PlayStation Store update occurs. Of course, as with all betas, there's a catch. Don't worry -- you don't have to buy another copy of LittleBigPlanet. The download will be absolutely free ... but only to the first 100,000 people that download it. Sadly, if you're not quick to grab the beta, it will simply disappear from the PlayStation Store, preventing any further downloads. You'll want to be by your PS3 next week if you want to guarantee entry into the beta (if you can't, enable Remote Play with your PSP). For more details on what's included with the EU beta, visit the PlayStation.Blog.

While we were flipping through the Facebook this morning, looking for pictures of Bobby Jones with that tramp Kelly Sue Eakins, we couldn't help but notice that our best buds on Ubisoft's Splinter Cell account had put up a sweet new pic. The snap captures our pals helping out some Russian friends with their makeovers (aren't they the nicest guys?), though we can't make any sense of the inexplicable caption below the image that reads, "Co-op mode split screen confirmed!" What does that have to do with makeovers, guys? Come on! [Thanks, SpyderTaco]

Now that the new year is in full swing, Microsoft has decided to take a look back at the top games of 2009. Specifically, Major Nelson has released a breakdown of the most popular games on Xbox Live during 2009. The overall top twenty list seems pretty standard with Halo 3 at the top, followed by Call of Duty 4. What's amazing, though, is that after releasing in November, Modern Warfare 2 managed to snag third place for the entire year. So, pretty popular game, then. On the downloadable front, Battlefield 1943 takes top XBLA honors, followed by Castle Crashers and Trials HD. Indie Games are topped by I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1N IT!!!1 (it is just a dollar), followed by Avatar Drop and RC-AirSim. Unsurprisingly, the top original Xbox game is still Halo 2, while Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and the original Fable take second and third place, respectively. Head over to Major Nelson for the full list.

Reporting the UK sales chart is starting to feel like being a weatherman in Los Angeles. For the ninth week in a row, Modern Warfare 2 sits atop the all formats chart. If Modern Warfare 2 makes it to ten weeks in a row, we're expecting a communique from Hitchhiker's Marvin. The next three spots are occupied by a casual alliance, consisting of Wii Fit Plus, Just Dance for Wii and Wii Sports Resort, respectively. Proving that the UK still has interest in games beyond war, sports and losing weight, Bayonetta's hair grabbed the fifth spot on the chart for its debut. THQ's Zelda meets God of War hybrid, Darksiders, also had a strong debut in eighth place. Had it bested the current chart champ, we'd be checking for signs of the apocalypse. Not the Wii version Great news, sports fans -- an EA Sports press release just brought some (anticipated) hoop-shaking news into our dreary Monday morning: NBA Jam is getting relaunched (or, rather, re-relaunched) later this year on the Wii by EA Canada. Details are slim, but the presser promises "new game modes, characters and gameplay depth," while simultaneously "[re-defining] the visuals for a sports game yet again." Not explicitly mentioned is whether the series' original progenitor, Mark Turmell, will be collaborating on the game. Considering he's currently stationed at EA Tiburon in Orlando, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities -- and if he is contributing, we feel confident that the title will be in gooBOOOOM-SHAKA-LAKA! Woah, sorry. We got a little overexcited there.

Today, Nintendo announced that the PokéWalker accessory, a Pokéball-shaped pedometer that interfaces with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, will be packaged with copies of the games when they arrive in stores on March 14. Nintendo had previously dated Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver along with the rest of its Q1 lineup, but it omitted mention of the accessory -- though the game's Amazon listing didn't. The Pokéwalker allows players to earn "Watts" with their steps, which can be used both to catch Pokémon inside the device and unlock routes in the main game. In addition, the device enables wireless item trading between two Pokéwalker carriers. Gotta walk the mall to catch 'em all!

BioWare is looking to complete the Mass Effect trilogy get the "epic conclusion" out the door before the current console cycle is over. Speaking with IGN, Project Manager Casey Hudson states that the developer is already at work on Mass Effect 3 and "definitely" wants to make it "a fairly short turnaround." Considering that the first Mass Effect rocked our galaxy in November 2007, followed by the sequel two years and a couple months later, it remains to be seen what qualifies as a "short turnaround." A 2012 release is the natural expectation at this point, but the impatient among might prefer the kind of turnaround associated with the Left 4 Dead sequel. Is that even enough time to finish all that DLC?

Just how long has Zelda Wii been in development? Surprisingly, the first mention of this upcoming Zelda game is back in the July 2007 issue of Game Informer. That would mean that Zelda Wii has had the privilege of the most development time since Ocarina of Time. If memory serves me well, I think [...]
