Though IGN is calling the Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands images it posted screenshots, we're not sure we buy it. They're absolutely pretty, but the amount of motion blur and polish we're seeing leads us to believe that these are way retouched. We've asked Ubisoft for clarification. The bigger problem is, of course, that no matter what they are, the Prince doesn't look nearly enough like movie-Prince-to-be Jake Gyllenhaal. We need screens from this game to look so much like Jake Gyllenhaal that we're confused and worried for Jake Gyllenhaal's personal safety when we look at them. And no, we're not just trying to teach ourselves how to spell Gyllenhaal. Why would you say that?

These are dire times for ye olde book industry. Dire indeed. A special printing of Dante's Inferno -- like, the book -- hopes to capitalize on "the hottest game around." Due January 19 in book stores, this new edition from Del Rey (of the Random House empire) features an introduction by executive producer Jonathan Knight and 16 pages of colorful artwork from "the action adventure blockbuster that's rocking the video-game world." There's a 14th-century epic poem squeezed in there, too. Perhaps best used as a bargaining chip for kids desperate to convince their parents that they should be allowed to play a game based on a literary classic, however "mature" it might be, this damned tie-in is unlikely to ascend to the heavenly gates of the bestsellers list. Still, if Visceral Games' clone adaptation inspires even a single player to check out the original poem, then that would be a beautiful thing. Hell, it would be divine!

EA CEO John Riccitiello mentioned during the company's reduced earnings conference call yesterday that the publisher plans to launch its "major MMO" in the spring of 2011. With no other announced "major MMO" in the works at Electronic Arts, the common wisdom of the Jedi (which can sometimes lead to bad things), points to that being Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic's release window. The company refused to elaborate further or acknowledge what game the executive was talking about. Eurogamer notes that other possibilities are Realtime Worlds' APB or Need for Speed: World Online, but neither has the hype of the Star Wars game. Of course, there's also a chance that EA has some super-secret MMO hidden away like a Sith apprentice.

[Image Credit: Patrick Haney] EA has its mind set on "re-inventing" classic board game Risk for Xbox Live Arcade. Declared as Risk: Factions, the game is being developed by Stainless Games, best known for XBLA's Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers (which is on sale this week). This new version of the classic will offer objective-based and world conquest modes. We're also told that during "animated combat missions, enemies will be able to trigger 'Overkill' moments," whatever that is. The game will also include five playable factions, "each with different strengths," which will battle on "new maps" with "dynamic terrain." Sorry, hold up, are we still talking about Risk? The announcement makes no mention of vanilla, "build up in Australia and take over the world" Risk being included with Factions. We've contacted EA for further details and will share them with you as soon as we know more.

Ever wonder what a city built on rock and roll would actually look like? Find out this spring when THQ releases Beat City for the DS. Beat City, developed by THQ Wireless developer Universomo, is a series of 20 rhythm-based minigames in which players "tap, swipe, or hold" to the beat, while the city transforms. Success in minigames will help drive Dame Isolde Minor and her Cacophony Corporation, who presumably dislike music, out of the city. While Universomo isn't quite as glamorous a developer as the Nintendo R&D1 team that created Rhythm Heaven, we're delighted to see someone else taking on the idea of rhythm-based minigames. That enthusiasm may diminish when we see actual screens or footage, but why not enjoy the moment?

Never did I think that, after finishing the original Army of Two, I'd ever be re-enlisting for a sequel. Sure, it sold well, but its myriad not-quite-fulfilled ideas and irritating "Dude! Bro!" lead characters just made me want to shrug off the game and move on with my life. So I sit here writing this pretty amazed at how good the sequel is. It's not, say, Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 2 good -- but a very solid improvement on the core co-op action concept, shedding just the right things (healing minigame? out!) and finally delivering an experience that actually plays off the strengths of being a two-man fighting force. Plus, it does so with a high degree of polish and prettiness, not to mention reworked characters that are -- and I can't believe I'm saying this -- actually funny and ... cool.
