THQ announced a bit of restructuring today, which means, sadly, layoffs. The publisher announced that it's refocusing Juiced developer Juice Games and MX vs. ATV/Deadly Creatures developer Rainbow Studios for content intended for digital distribution. The studios will be renamed THQ Digital Studios Warrington and THQ Digital Studios Phoenix, respectively. About 60 total staff are being laid off as part of this restructuring. Juice Games was already subject to layoffs in late 2008. The studios will develop games for "all major digital platforms, including Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, iPhone and iPad" -- so much for WiiWare and DSiWare -- and will also work together on a community platform to be used across THQ's lineup of core games.

I can’t believe just how little people are interested in Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles. I guess Wii owners are absolutely finished with the on-rails genre. I wonder what would happen if Nintendo put out one of their major franchises as an on-rails shooter.

The vice president in charge of "Southern Europe" (read: Spain, Portugal) at Sony Computer Entertainment isn't a man to mince words. No sir, James Armstrong answered his recent interview question from Canarias Al Dia on the subject of Gran Turismo 5's release date with rock solid certainty: "We believe that we will launch the product this Autumn, before the holiday, though this hasn't been decided yet. [our translation, not direct]" Alright, so Armstrong wasn't exactly 100 percent nailing down a date for the game that's been delayed more than a few times (Sony most recently pushed back its Japanese release to an unknown date). However, it is nice to see someone at Sony saying the sim might actually see release before the end of this console cycle. Oh, and in case you were wondering, he also puts doubt on the use of Sony's Motion Controller in the game, so at least we've got that knowledge to console us in the meantime. In November, Yuji Naka's studio, Prope, revealed a new original IP, Ivy the Kiwi? ... for Windows Mobile. The latest Famitsu reveals that the developer is porting the game to some game consoles! Namely, DS and Wii. Namco Bandai will release Ivy the Kiwi in Japan on April 22 -- it's the first Prope game to be published by someone other than Sega or (in the case of the Windows Mobile version) Prope itself. However, despite its origins as a mobile game, and its simple pick-up-and-play gameplay (which involves stretching and bouncing drawn lines to move a bird through a maze), Ivy the Kiwi is destined for retail on consoles, at a price of ¥3,990 ($43).

Click to enlarge bull shot Mythological arena combat news now, with Sega announcing Tournament of Legends exclusively for the Wii. The 3D fighter, which appears to be the final incarnation of High Voltage's "Gladiator A.D.," is expected to cast down the gauntlet -- after it's undone the wrist strap -- in North America on May 18, 2010 A.D. As you might expect, several larger-than-life figures ("some of the biggest playable characters on Wii," in fact) from world mythology are embroiled in the titular tournament, including a minotaur, gladiator, Valkyrie and Gorgon. Up to two players can enter the arena and have at each other with different weapons, magic and supported Classic Controllers. You can also summon "a man-eating lion," which scientists have repeatedly shown to be the only useful variant of the lion.

WBIE announced today that Scribblenauts, 5th Cell's puzzle adventure game that spawns any object a player writes in, has now shipped one million copies worldwide. According to WBIE, which, as publisher, has an admittedly biased view of the situation, Scribblenauts has now reached "blockbuster status." Keeping in mind that the reported figure is one million units shipped (and not necessarily sold), it's still an impressive number for a third-party DS game -- especially one as weird as an adventure game that features puzzle solving through the use of one's vocabulary. How are other developers expected to rip off that formula?
