Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi, by way of his Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shimbun company, has a new DS project on the way in Japan. Hobonichi no Kenkou Techou ("Almost-Daily Health Notebook") is a DSiWare app designed to help users keep track of what's going on with their health, and it's every bit as likely to be localized for English-speaking users as Mother 3.

The app allows you to log your height, weight, allergies, recent illnesses and other health-related data daily, as well as prepare answers for seven questions you'd be likely to be asked upon admission to a hospital.

The free app, out tomorrow, is based on a physical notebook produced by Itoi's company in collaboration with physician Miwako Honda. It's really a lot cuter than the concept sounds, on account of all the cartoon animals.

Ubisoft will cease including paper instruction manuals inside its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 boxed games, starting with this holiday's Shaun White Skateboarding (as revealed in an announcement that quietly confirms the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Shaun White Skateboarding). In place of a paper manual, a digital manual will be provided and accessible in-game. Digital manuals are often more convenient than paper ones (except if you're trying to read one on your way back from the store) and are already becoming commonplace with the proliferation of downloadable games. Plus, we're not exactly going to lament the loss of the no-frills, black-and-white manuals most games include nowadays. But how does Shaun White feel about it?

"It's pretty cool that Ubisoft is making a conscious effort to go green with its new video game packaging," White said in a canned statement. "I'm excited for my new skateboarding game to come out and stoked that it will be the very first Ubisoft game to be part of their green packaging initiatives."

In addition to saving money for Ubisoft, scaling back on paper manuals -- no plans to extend the initiative to Wii, DS or PSP games were announced -- is part of an environmentally-conscious program from the publisher that also introduces a new recycled "ecoTech" case for PC games packaging. Splinter Cell: Conviction will be the publisher's first PC game to sport the new box when it arrives at retailers next week.

I think the Wiimote has to be on a list like this, simply because it revolutionized gaming. It’s sending the industry down a whole new path. Without the Wiimote, we wouldn’t see the motion-controlled craze that’s hitting us right now. Hopefully it will lead to bigger and better things!

The "Balanced Brawl" project, first announced in 2009, aimed to fix Super Smash Bros. Brawl by removing overpowered combos and exploitable moves and by altering individual characters to improve the competitive balance. It was an impressive project then, and it's been made even more impressive by the fact that you can make use of it in your own copy of the game right now -- without having to install the Homebrew Channel or permanently hack your Wii.

The development team has implemented a clever mechanism that loads the Balanced Brawl files from an SD card. You just have to download the files to a card (and remove all your saved custom Brawl stages), pop it in the system and launch the Stage Builder mode -- the loader will automatically take over from there. If you're interested in having a Balanced Brawl party, we suggest throwing one soon, before Nintendo releases a firmware update to block the unlicensed balancing act.

[Thanks, Kyle]

The feature war between this year's upcoming downloadable shooters is growing intense, with more and more bullets finding their way onto the list in every fact sheet. Blacklight: Tango Down, developed by Zombie Studios, now touts four-player co-op missions, in addition to its player customization, experience-driven progression system and competitive multiplayer modes.

The "Black Ops" co-op missions will challenge you and three other e-soldiers to best an enemy faction that has overrun the streets of Balik. As a reminder, we'll note that the streets of Balik are "both futuristically alien as well as hauntingly familiar." They're the urban equivalent of an Ed Wood flying saucer, and that has to count for something.

Blacklight: Tango Down will land on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC this summer for an expected price of $15.

Baseball fans –

This week begins our divisional prediction series utilizing MLB 10 The Show to simulate the 2010 season. First up is the American League West… with the Angels, Rangers, Mariners, and A’s all vying for the top spot, the race for the AL West crown seems to be wide open. Ichiro has Seattle ready to claim their first division title since 2001 and if Griffey can bring back some magic from his past Mariner days, they just might have a shot. The Rangers are coming off their first winning season since 2004 and now adding Vlad Guerrero to an already stacked lineup (2nd most HRs in MLB in ’09), they will be a tough hurdle to overcome. Then there’s of course the Angels who have won the last three AL West titles. Torii Hunter anchors another solid lineup and with Scott Kazmir leading the way on the mound, they look poised to grab their fourth.

Here’s a look at our final AL West prediction video showing you which teams will come out on top in October according to MLB 10 The Show.

Welcome to The Show!
