Hi there! This is my first post for the PlayStation.Blog, so I’ll give you a brief introduction. I started my video game career in 1998 as an audio designer, working on the Carnivores series, EA’s Black and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and many more. More recently, myself and key team members were responsible for IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey for the PSP, MelodyBloxx, Rhythm of War PSP, and BreakQuest (see below).

So, NormalTanks! This game is an old school-looking, fast-paced, multi-directional, top-down arcade shooter set in a sci-fi universe.

There are eight challenging, dynamic, and hazardous environments to tackle: inside enemy bases, outdoor jungles, mountains and more. Every level has its own end-level boss to defeat. Generally, the game features more than 30 different enemy types including tanks, heavy machines, helicopters, robots and bio mechanical creatures, SSM missile sites, and heavy cannons.

To destroy enemies more effectively, there are special red-star bonuses that help upgrade your tank abilities: main cannon, machine gun, armor, and movement speed. The downside is that, when you get killed, you lose your bonuses. On some levels, your tank will transform into a tiny mine bot to stealthily pass by enemies and deactivate electric energy fields. In other levels, your tank turns into a giant walking robot, which demolishes everything on its way to the final level’s alien hive!

This year, NormalTanks received an “honorable mention” in the Independent Game Festival, Student Showcase.

We also didn’t get a chance to talk about our recently released BreakQuest PlayStation Mini, which was released on the US PlayStation Store on March 18th. Let’s fix that now!

The concept behind BreakQuest was created in conjunction with an advanced 2D physics engine, which gives a completely new game experience through a freely shaped world and reactive environment. There are 100 levels, especially adapted for the PSP’s wide screen, and every level features its own colorful design, unique sound theme, and elements behavior. Another breakthrough in BreakQuest is its huge palette of power ups and power downs. This including nine different weapons: guns, rockets and mines, various balls and bumper shapes and sizes, multi- and fire- balls, block wall and magnet, and much more.

"Simpler, Quicker, Deeper." That's the tag line for Madden 11, as EA appears to be angling for the attention of the unsophisticated, no-time-to-waste "casual" demographic without dissuading its hardcore player base. The new Madden will be made both "simpler" and "quicker" through GameFlow, the buzzword for an optional auto-play calling mode, which puts players in the role of a quarterback that receives his plays from an AI coach. "Not everyone has an hour to dedicate," says senior producer Phil Frazier, alluding to the average length of a typical Maddden match. GameFlow is said to shave down match times to 30 minutes.

But fear not, bro, Madden also goes "deeper" this year with the option to create custom game plans before each match. Plus, there's another buzzword to memorize: Locomotion. That's the name for the game's "all new" animation system. While still short of the highs achieved by the Euphoria-powered animations of Backbreaker, there is a gameplay component to Madden's Locomotion system: Players can now lean and dodge during runs with the analog sticks.

According to the trailer, Madden 11 "will make every football game before it obsolete." (At least, GameStop's trade-in value will certainly reflect this sentiment.) Check out the dev diaries after the break, if you're not yet sufficiently pumped up for game day: August 10.

I've been dodging the question all week: "Hey, so how is Dead to Rights: Retribution?"

I know what they want to hear, of course. They're expecting me to savage a game that (1) is part of a series that's largely disliked by those who even remember it exists and (2) is made by Volatile Games, which last delivered unto us the truly terrible Reservoir Dogs. (I'd gleefully let Michael Madsen cut off my ear in exchange for never having to play that game again.)

I understood why friends and co-workers would be expecting an evisceration. But I found myself evading the question because if I was being honest, the answer I'd have to give is this: Dead to Rights: Retribution? Not half bad.

As Square Enix continues to expand globablly, it's starting to publish titles in Japan that aren't traditionally "Square Enix," like Modern Warfare 2 and games from its newly acquired Eidos subsidiary. According to Famitsu (via Andriasang), president Yoichi Wada has announced a new box label to be used by the publisher that will differentiate its "mature" Western games from its usual slate of more innocent fantasy products: "Square Enix Extreme Edges." Wait -- didn't Wada say he wanted Japanese gamers not to discriminate against Western games?

The "Extreme Edges" label will be used for Western-made games bearing CERO "D" (17+) or "Z" (18+) ratings, though Square Enix has yet to publish any CERO Z titles. The Z rating is legally age-restricted, and games bearing it are often not displayed in stores. Square Enix, however, will release Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days in Japan on August 26; a game that at least seems "edgy" and "extreme" enough for the new label and probably worthy of the CERO Z rating, as well.
