Nintendo's had quite the start this year, president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed during a recent CNBC interview (that you can watch after the break). Both the Wii and DS are performing exceedingly well in 2010, Fils-Aime reported -- a level of success we're certain Nintendo isn't familiar with.

"In the last four months, consumers have bought over five million Wii consoles," Fils-Aime boasted. He was quick to jab competitors Sony and MIcrosoft as well, stating "that amount is equal to the entire amount that our competitors have sold over the previous 12 months."

Fils-Aime also offered a neat statistic on Wii Netflix usage. Since launching on the console in March, "almost a million" have participated in the service. He added that "we're getting great consumer compliments."

Fils-Aime said that the DS has been selling extremely well and that "we think that through April that we'll have the best four month time period to kick off a new calendar year that we've ever had with the device." We'd comment but, really, doesn't this happen every year?

Those sneaky Templars, always threatening the world through Ubisoft-owned Facebook pages! Oh, is that a new development? Assassin's Creed series villain Dr. Vidic (we don't blame you if you don't remember who he is -- he's this guy) recently posted a sinister statement on Ubi's Assassin's Creed 2 Facebook page. "It is the time of our rising. A new age enters and a great battle looms. Templar destiny is at hand and waiting for you." Hey, at least he's not yelling at Lucy, right?

After Ubisoft's reveal of a forthcoming AC "episode" with multiplayer functionality coming by April 2011, we're happy to break out our jump to conclusions mat for some good ol' fashioned speculation, but we can't be sure if "Vidic's" words hint at an upcoming reveal of said game ("a great battle looms") or not. A domain registration by Ubi for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood from earlier this year doesn't hurt our case either, but again, without the publisher's confirmation we're not sure exactly what the message means. But we are pretty sure that we're in for some not-so-exciting social media marketing.

Howdy gang! I am going to tell you a bit about Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West, a fast-paced, team-based multiplayer shooter soon to be released on PSN.

So What Does It Play Like?
Many comparisons have been made (by people watching previews) to Team Fortress 2, which is understandable due to the similarity in genre. Although we do love TF2, we are very confident that the gameplay and feel of Lead and Gold has an identity all of its own.

Lead and Gold features six multiplayer maps, five multiplayer game modes, a co-op mode and a single player practice mode. The matches are five-on-five affairs and the game mechanics, game modes and maps have all been designed with one common goal: team play.

Let me give you some examples:

  • Player characters have aura buffs — we call them Synergies — that strengthen your gang-mates if they stay in your vicinity. This is a simple but effective way to encourage players to work together.
  • The experience system rewards actions that actually help the team, such as carrying mission objective items and reviving gang-mates. The experience system is non-persistent so everyone starts a new round on equal terms.
  • You can revive fallen comrades. Before death, players are usually left in a knocked down state from which they can be revived by a gang-mate. This is yet another incentive to hang around your mates.
  • Game mode objectives generally require cooperation. Carrying a heavy sack of gold or a keg filled with gunpowder makes you quite an easy target, unless you have back up.

Who Do You Play As?
There are four professions to choose from. We have the shotgun-toting and dynamite-hurling Blaster, the quick-shooting Gunslinger, the mid-range marauding Deputy, and a long-range specialist known as the Trapper. Each class has their own special ability, or traits as we call them. The blaster chucks dynamite, the gunslinger fans his revolver for unparalleled rate of fire, the Deputy tags enemies making them more vulnerable, and the Trapper can lay traps to incapacitate her prey.

Game Modes?
Lead and Gold offers a rootin’, tootin’ selection of game modes that fits nicely into the Western setting. Conquest is a zone capture mode…with a twist. The zones must be captured in sequence, which makes for a focused and intense tug-of-war like battle. In Greed, the objective is for both gangs is to bring as much gold as possible to your drop-off zone. Remember to cover your teammate carrying the gold! In Powder Keg, one team must sabotage a specific objective, like a waterwheel, while the opposing team tries to defend it. The attacking team needs to bring a powder keg to the objective and shoot it to blow it up, while protecting the player carrying the keg. Then there is my personal favorite, Robbery, which plays like a combination of Greed and Powder Keg. The attacking gang must first bring a keg to a safe to blow it open, and then carry the gold to their drop-off zone. There is also Shootout, the only game mode without specific objectives — it’s a straight-up team deathmatch.

Why the Wild West?
When we were thinking about our next project, there was one thing we all could definitely agree on during our creative discussions and ramblings. It was the fact that the Wild West has been a criminally neglected setting in videogames for many years. One day, in one of those meetings, we had a collective revelation. Gunshots and screams of horses were heard in the distance, a fragrant smell of campfire beans filled the room, and a Morricone medley played on the old static ridden radio.

We realized we need to make a cowboy shooter. A multiplayer, third-person cowboy shooter.

Best Moment in the Game?
For sure when you get shot down and face off with another shot-down enemy. It is a bit like Monty Python and the Holy Grail where he screams, “I can still bite you!” I love it!

You can find more information about the game at www.leadandgold.com.

Thank you for your time!

There's still over a month of spring left -- that's plenty of time for a new "spring 2010" Xbox 360 bundle to join the Spring 2010 Elite set! Amazon has taken the wraps off a new Arcade bundle, featuring two of Rare's recent, weird 360 games: Viva Piñata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. The family-friendly package, shipping May 7, sells for the same $199.99 as the standalone Arcade unit -- which makes it a good deal even if you would only use the games as trade-in or eBay fodder.

But if it's family games you're after, you can get them on the cheap right now. Amazon is also offering a buy one, get one half-off deal on a selection of family-oriented 360 games, including Pure, Lego Rock Band, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

[Thanks, Tom!]

Fallout: New Vegas begs the question: Are we really ready for more Fallout? No mere expansion pack, New Vegas is equal in size and scope to Fallout 3 and will require a significant time investment to fully explore. Bethesda has brought in Obsidian to develop the title, and the studio is adding a lot of content (more than double the weapons of Fallout 3) and necessary tweaks to the Fallout foundation.

Set three years after Fallout 3, New Vegas stars a mysterious stranger, though not a vault-dweller, who's recovered from a bullet to the head and ventures forth to figure out the identity of the shooter. Of course, this journey of discovery is just as much about meting out that particular brand of Fallout justice.

You know that phrase, "out with the old, in with the new?" Telltale recently put together a sweet little bundle that allows you to obtain the new while also obtaining (the renovated version of) the old, all for a reasonable price. Until this Friday, you can grab Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and all five chapters of Tales of Monkey Island for $19.99. If only the bundle included something borrowed and something blue -- then you could easily use it to satisfy all of your nonsensical pre-wedding rituals.

In the Mix Featuring Armin Van Buuren, the Wii DJ game featuring the likeness and tracks of the popular DJ, was originally set for a fall 2009 release opposite DJ Hero (which would have been awkward). Publisher Foreign Home Games smartly delayed the game, and now Amazon has it set for June 26 in Europe. There is currently no word on a release in North America.

Aussie-Nintendo posted baffling new screens of the Wii music game, revealing that the main game mode is devoid of the usual note markers, instead providing some kind of tunnel of light as its on-screen indicator. Perhaps you point at one of the corners of the screen? It also reveals that you'll be able to perform gestures to make your glowing, outlined torso "interact" with a crowd.

Over at the (coincidentally named) Australian dance music site In the Mix, you can find a list of the 61 tracks included in the game.
