A tipster sent us an info sheet on Microsoft's new slimmer Xbox 360. Of most interest to us was the spec sheet, with some notable highlights: support for Kensington Locks, and dimensions. According to these specs, the "new S console" is about 17% smaller than the original and also physically incapable of getting the red ring of death. No, that doesn't mean the console won't break -- instead, the Xbox 360 slim lacks a red "ring of light." If your console runs into some fatal error, expect it to flash green.

Should we get ready to coin the GROD?

[Thanks, B.!]

At a recent E3 preview presentation, LittleBigPlanet 2 mastermind Alex Evans revealed a handful of new innovations that Media Molecule is incorporating in the do-it-yourself sequel. One aspect of the game that will see a major (and oft-requested) improvement is its community features. According to Evans, the days of hunting for levels randomly distributed across the face of a planet will be gone -- player creations will now appear in a simple list, which players will be able to filter using a number of metrics (genre, keyword, etc.).

More exciting than that was the explanation of the functions offered by LBP.me, the web portal which will give players their own personal websites, which will automatically update with that player's creations, recently played levels and top scores. If you're looking at one of these pages in a browser, you can set the game to automatically queue up the level next time you play -- or, alternatively, you could just print out a QR barcode assigned to each level, place it in front of your PlayStation Eye, and watch as it loads up the appropriate creation.

EyePet may have been delayed a year for its North American debut, but it's become a far more advanced game since its original release (at least technically). High tech families equipped with a super-fancy 3DTV will not only play the game with the Move motion controller, but with newly added 3D support as well.

Whereas implementing support for Sony's motion controller added about nine months of development time to London Studios' pet simulator, 3D took about a month to implement. Unlike many other games, very little detail has been sacrificed to produce the 3D effect. The character model has been largely untouched, although some of the props have received some tweaks. (Other games drop the polygon count or texture resolution to achieve the demanding technical requirements necessary for 3D.)

SCEE's Doucat admits that not many families will ever experience EyePet in 3D, an unfortunate reality of the high cost of entry. However, EyePet's implementation of 3D is some of the best we've experienced from Sony. Instead of focusing on flashy effects, there are a number of subtle implementations. The best part of the demo was washing the EyePet. Over time, steam appears on what appears to be virtual glass. The steam builds up slowly over time, and the slow drops of water that roll down are incredibly believable in 3D. Does it change the game? No. But did it look cool? Absolutely.

During its keynote press conference, Konami confirmed that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the Kojima-assisted, MercurySteam-developed 3D reboot of the classic series set to vanquish the forces of evil on the Xbox 360 and PS3, would arrive "later this year." Word came from producer David Cox, who emerged before a new trailer was shown to attendees. We'll try to get our hands on said trailer and whip it up on the site.

Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds looks Human Torch hot (character not confirmed) on the E3 showfloor -- but these limited edition shirts worn by Capcom staff were certainly another eye-catcher around the booth. The picture above doesn't do this high-quality shirt justice. We've got two medium-sized shirts to give away -- not to the same person, mind you -- so just follow these rules:
  • Leave a comment telling us who would win in a fight: Marvel or Capcom?
  • You must be 13 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec).
  • Limit 1 entry per person.
  • This entry period ends at 12:00PM ET on Monday, June 21, 2010.
  • At that time, we will randomly select 2 winners. Please note: Shirts are awesome and not for resale.

As you may have heard from Jack Tretton’s E3 keynote yesterday, after a successful First Season of PlayStation Network’s debut original competitive reality series, The Tester, we’re excited to announce we will be moving forward with a Second Season! A casting call for Season 2 is now open at thetester.com.

So if you think you’ve got what it takes to compete against other hopeful gamers from across the country to win a job as an official PlayStation game tester, go to our casting site, powered by GotCast, and create a profile that includes a photo and video about yourself. Remember, not only are we looking for highly skilled gamers, we are looking for personality too.

We’re also adding a new twist to the casting process for this Season. There will be an online casting contest that will allow at least one lucky person to be voted onto the Season 2 cast by the PlayStation Community. So make sure to get the word out about yourself after you’ve created your profile.

The First Season of The Tester, produced by reality programming veterans 51 Minds Entertainment, debuted exclusively on PlayStation Network in February 2010, pitting 11 hopeful gamers to compete for a chance to win a position as a game tester at Sony Computer Entertainment America. In the 8-episode series, the competitors were put to the test under the scrutiny of a panel of judges, including Brent Gocke, release manager from SCEA, and guest judges such as David Jaffe, director and lead designer of God of War and Twisted Metal. In the end, Will Powers, aka “Cyrus”, beat out the 10 other contestants and won a job working for PlayStation’s Quality Assurance department in San Diego, Calif.

Take a look at this video for some helpful tips from Will Powers on how to make your profile a winner!

Look out for more updates from us during the summer long, interactive casting process, which begins today. Community voting will start on July 6th.

You can also still catch the entire eight-episode debut Season available from PlayStation Store in both Standard and High Definition formats.

Konami has just shared details on the brand new, Vatra Games-developed Silent Hill game for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 coming next year in 2011. Apparently it will have an escaped prisoner finding the town of Silent Hill, which is a little surprising. Haven't they closed the doors and locked the locks on that place yet? Every other year, it's somebody wandering in there to be chased down by evil nurses or pyramid heads, or whatever else they've come up with.

The game will have a brand new composer, Dan Licht, known for his work on the television show Dexter. He's replacing Akira Yamaoka, longtime composer and sound designer, who recently left for Grasshopper Manufacture. We'll look for the game in 2011, and in the meantime, please, everybody. If the sign says Silent Hill, just turn around and head back to the interstate.

Update: Press release get! The release from Konami says the game is called Silent Hill 8, but that's just a working title so far. The escaped prisoner's name is Murphy Pendleton, and he'll be part of "an all-new storyline and unique evolutions in gameplay." Sounds fun!
