Well, that didn't take long. Less than a week after Apple announced that it would "relax" some of its iOS restrictions, allowing the use of third-party app creation tools, among other things, comes the following announcement from Epic Games, straight out of the Korea Games Conference: "We announced UDK will be able to generate iOS applications!"

To translate for you quickly: Independent iPhone developers will soon be able to use the freely available Unreal Development Kit - which Epic also announced has 350,000 installations to its name - to create graphically lush mobile apps. If you're looking for an example of that graphical potential, check out the Epic Citadel tech demo, first revealed at this month's Apple press conference. With over one million downloads (another figure shared today!), we wouldn't be surprised if you already have.

But you probably haven't seen Dungeon Defenders, a title whose developer has taken the jump from UDK novice to Unreal Engine 3 licensee, and all the commercial benefits that entails. You can see a video of the game running on both the iPhone and Android platforms after the break, but it's also in development for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

We're pretty excited to see the strength of Unreal Engine married to the diversity and quantity of the new breed of mobile gaming marketplaces, iOS and Android included.

Years of action gaming have instilled deep within us an irrational phobia of standing anywhere near red barrels; a syndrome we're sure many of you can sympathize with. But a study from the University of Rochester says those same games might also be helping us make even non-barrel-centric decisions faster.

After giving audio and visual tests to two groups of college students that had recently played either an FPS or The Sims, researchers found that while the two groups got the same amount of answers right, action gamers were able to arrive at those answers about 25 percent faster.

Sadly, the testing had to be discontinued when the FPS players refused to stop marking their triumph by knocking The Sims players to the floor and repeatedly jamming their crotches into the losers' horrified faces.

The excellent, PSP strategy RPG Valkyria Chronicles 2 will receive DLC in "one huge pack" later this month. Sega will have more details and pricing sometime this week. The first mission pack revealed by the publisher will take players to Mellvere for a challenge "unlike any you remember from the initial campaign."

For fans of the first game who want something creepy, Sega has also revealed the code to unlock Isara Gunther as a playable character: 37LRK5D214VQVFYH. If Sega has included the same unlockable characters featured in the Japanese version of the game, expect future codes for Faldio Landzaat and Maximilian from the original Valkyria.
