We know them by the catchy names "Itsu no Ma Tsuushin" and "Surechigai Tsuushin," but an English-language hardware outline for the 3DS (PDF) provides the English names for these Tag Mode services, both of which allow the 3DS to communicate wirelessly without the user's involvement.

The ability for the 3DS to seek wi-fi signals while sleeping, and automatically download content, is known as "SpotPass," while the passive communication between DS systems (used, for example, to trade Miis in the new Mii Plaza) is "StreetPass." "It is possible to transmit data for multiple games simultaneously," the document notes.

One of the belles of last night's Nintendo press ball was the 3DS version of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. According to Andriasang, Konami revealed that the "revival" of the PS2 stealth-action classic is set to arrive in Japan next Spring, assumedly a couple short months after the handheld's February 2011 release.

If the short clip from the game shown during the event's 3DS software montage didn't satisfy your need for three-dimensional jungle crawling, you can check out the entire video demo we got to see at E3 over on the game's official site. Of course, it'll be missing an entire dimension when you watch it -- man, this whole "releasing 2D trailers for the 3DS" thing is going to get confusing, quick, isn't it?

Not long ago, our friends at O-Games announced here on the blog that Superstars V8 Racing would be launching in North America exclusively on PlayStation Network as a download with all of the trimmings of a retail game for only $19.99. Today we’re here to let you know that the date is officially set for October 26th – and we’d love to tell you more about our studio and the work we put into the project since its inception.

My name is Luca Ferrara, and I’m the Game Director on Superstars V8 Racing. As a developer, Milestone has been working in the racing genre for many, many years. Driving is our passion, and bringing our passion into the world of video games is our specialty. Some of you might know us from other franchises on two wheels like Moto GP 07SBK Superbike World Championship series. Others might recognize us from our days working on games like the Screamer series and Evolution GT. While a large portion of our fans reside in Europe, we rarely get an opportunity to reach out to our fans in the US – so I’m happy to be here to tell you more about Superstars V8 Racing and excited to soon have our fans in the States get behind the wheel.

The game is based on the official license of the Superstars Series, a championship of top-class V8 cars organized by Infront Motor Sports. Up until we began development, no one had ever attempted to recreate this series in a game at this level of detail, so we hit the tarmac and began modeling and building out the ultimate V8 experience. The end result is an action-packed racing game that lets you feel the power of the V8 cars, which are insanely high tuned vehicles derived from production models, such as the BMW 550, the Audi RS4 or the Jaguar S Type R. They have up to 450 HP, so you’ll really have to tame them! You’ll have the chance to race on 10 exciting tracks, such as the Italian circuit of Monza, Portimao in Portugal or Kyalami in South Africa.

There are several game modes that you can play: quick race, time attack, race weekend or the whole championship. Moreover, Superstars V8 Racing features many special challenges that will test your abilities to the limit! When you feel you are good enough and you want to face other real drivers, you can play online: the multiplayer supports up to 12 players. The game also lets you enable a series of driving aids to make the game experience just as you like it. The style of play can be set between Arcade, with all driving aids activated, or Simulation, where everything is determined by the ability of the driver.

Our hope is that players will be able to recognize that we wanted to deliver an immediate recreation of a raw driving experience. What counts here is speed and competition, and you’ll find plenty of both!

All of that said, we’re just a few weeks away from launch, and as we mentioned in the headline – yes – our friends at O-Games are also giving away some FREE DOWNLOAD CODES for the game at launch in the US! How can you win? Simply head to the newly launched official North American ‘Superstars V8 Racing’ Facebook page, “Like” the page, and then post the phrase ‘Superstars V8 Racing on PSN’ onto the wall. You’ll then be automatically entered to randomly win one of 25 download codes that will be given away on October 26th. You have until October 25th at 11:59pm PST to enter! Also, with 12-player multiplayer, be sure to suggest the page to friends so they can get in on the action too!

Thanks again for all of your support, and we can’t wait to get you on the tracks at a low cost without needing to leave the comfort of your own couch when the game hits the PlayStation Store on the 26th. Take care!

P.S. – And yes – to confirm – the game WILL feature FULL Platinum Trophy support that will surely have you speeding around corners to win the full set in no time. Enjoy!

There's sad news for true rap fans today as we bring you the final seven songs to be included in Def Jam Rapstar:
  • Beastie Boys - "Brass Monkey"
  • Kanye West - "Stronger"
  • Lil' Kim - "Crush On You"
  • Notorious B.I.G. - "Big Poppa"
  • Rob Base - "It Takes Two
  • Snoop Dogg - "Gin and Juice"
  • Soulja Boy Tell'em - "Turn My Swag On"
Yes, we're excited to see "Gin and Juice," "Big Poppa" and "Stronger," but we can't help but feel depressed when realizing that we'll never get to test our rap holes out on classics like "Pirate Rap," "Math Rap" and, of course, "That's How I Beat Shaq." See the full list of disappointments after the break.

Oh well. Wake us when that MC Scat Kat DLC drops.

Following Nintendo's announcement of Japanese launch details for the 3DS, Square Enix announced a new version of its venerable Bust a Move/Puzzle Bobble franchise, called Tobidasu! Puzzle Bobble 3D ("Jump Out! Puzzle Bobble 3D")

In addition to the normal match-three gameplay, the 3DS puzzler includes "gimmick bubbles," which will involve the third dimension in some way. How that will work has yet to be announced, but we suspect the "gimmick" label will prove quite accurate. Puzzle Bobble 3D will jump into Japanese retail this spring.

According to Ninja Theory chief Tameem Antoniades, the downloadable content for the much-anticipated Enslaved isn't just going to be "an extra few levels kind of thing. It's an entirely new experience," he tells Destructoid in a recent interview. He says that the "extra" content was designed as a whole new project -- the game is a cohesive story and experience in itself, and then the DLC was created from "a little extra time and budget for something totally extra, which is totally optional." Strangely, he couldn't confirm that the DLC would follow the Pigsy character (which is what Namco said about a week ago), but he promises a "meaty" experience nevertheless.

Antoniades also talks more about how the game was developed from a very cinematic point of view -- the company hired real screenwriters and filmmakers to come work on the project, and took inspiration from the idea of "buddy movies, where each character is part of a team," Antoniades says, "and that without each other you can't accomplish the mission." We're very much looking forward to seeing how all of this influence and hard work pans out -- the game will be out next week.

For the second time this year, UK retailer GAME announced the closure of stores following further financial losses. MCV reports the company plans to close 85 stores over the next three years, slimming down to 550 shops.

The closures are designed to reduce overlap between the company's two brands (GAME and Gamestation) and "drive for greater cost efficiency" (i.e., cut general overhead). GAME's chairman Peter Lewis noted that 70 percent of customers from stores closed earlier this year shifted to another GAME store. The other 30 percent went to another game store.
