At a pre-TGS event, EA demonstrated gameplay of Alice: Madness Returns, with a segment in real-world London transitioning to a Wonderland in which Alice used a pepper grinder as a Gatling gun, fighting weird baby-doll monsters and giant teapots that spat boiling tea.

After bearing witness to the return of the madness, we chatted with American McGee, head of developer Spicy Horse, about the new game, his name as a brand, and, of course, the other recent reimagining of Alice in Wonderland, courtesy of Tim Burton.

I long for the days when games were games and we didn’t have to categorize them as “hardcore” or “casual”. I may be old fashioned, but if I enjoy a game, I’m going to play it. I don’t care what category it falls into!

Harmonix has confirmed that budding musicians will need to pay an extra dollar to upgrade Rock Band 3 DLC with Pro Mode support for guitar parts. "Typical" DLC songs will continue to be sold for $2 (and those tracks include keyboard and drum Pro Mode support, as well as vocal harmonies), but enabling Pro Mode for guitar will cost another dollar, MTV Games' Paul DeGooyer told IGN. He also noted that not all songs will have a Pro Mode guitar add-on, since there are certain guitar parts that "wouldn't rise to the level that they would need to have Pro Mode authoring."

Additionally, DeGooyer further explained the song importing process from previous Rock Band games. RB3 will recognize any existing tracks from RB1 and Lego Rock Band that may already be on your hard drive (or you can pay the $5 and $10 fees, respectively, to purchase keys to rip them), while RB2 tracks can be exported into the RB3 song library for a nominal fee -- DeGooyer said it will be more than $5, though.

Harmonix is also planning to add keyboard parts and Pro Mode support to old songs, and there will be a charge to purchase those updates, as well. Most likely, said DeGooyer, customers who've previously purchased a song will just get a discount on an updated version (instead of having to by the new version at full price). In the abstract, all these added fees might sound expensive, but they're still probably cheaper than real guitar lessons.

Kinect adopters won't be limited to spending face time with just each other come launch, as Marc Whitten, Xbox Live general manager, has confirmed the sensor will interact with Windows Live Messenger on PCs. "I'm also excited to confirm that Video Kinect will integrate with Windows Live Messenger at launch, so Xbox Live members can video chat with hundreds of millions of PC users around the world," he said in a press announcement.

However, it appears the cross-platform functionality will be limited to video chat. If you were hoping to invite your PC pals to virtually watch Harry Potter and the Goblet Devils of Shamshire (or whatever) with you, it's not happening. As if they'd stop playing StarCraft 2 long enough to join you, anyway.

Ignition Entertainment is in the process of shutting down its west London development studio, reports GamesIndustry.biz. The closure will result in an unspecified number of layoffs, and stalls the progress of WarDevil and another project, uh, Project Kane. The studio is expected to officially close on October 31.

Formerly known as Digi-Guys, the Ignition London studio, located in Ealing, has been toiling over various incarnations of WarDevil for years. A "WarDevil: Unleash the Beast Within" demo was first shown at TGS ... 2005. The last update on the game dates back to roughly a year ago, when Edge magazine toured the studio and saw two tech demos (one on the original Xbox!). According to Ignition group chairman Hassan Sadiq, the mysterious WarDevil and the even more mysterious Project Kane just passed new, six-month proof-of-concept phases, and "the board and studio management are currently evaluating [...] whether the required quality will be achieved by completing internally or with an external partner."

Ignitiion, which was acquired by Indian media conglomerate UTV in 2007, will continue to operate its corporate headquarters out of London, with a focus on publishing; though Sadiq assured that projects underway at Ignition's other studios in Austin, Gainesville (Fla.), Beijing and Tokyo (where the intriguing action game El Shaddai is in development) are "ramping up." The company's most recent release was Zombie Studios' Blacklight: Tango Down, a downloadable mutliplayer FPS.

On the same day it revealed the Japanese price and release date for the 3DS, Nintendo also cut its profit forecast by half for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. The company previously projected a net income of ¥200 billion ($2.39 billion), but now expects to bring in about ¥90 billion ($1.08 billion). In the previous fiscal year, the company added ¥230 billion (about $2.45 billion) to its money bin.

Nintendo claims the radical shift is due to stronger-than-expected yen appreciation, current sales, the sales outlook for the 2010 holiday, and the "decided release conditions for the Nintendo 3DS." Despite lowering overall DS hardware and software sales (of which the 3DS is a part) for the fiscal year, Nintendo expects to ship 4 million 3DS units by March 2011, along with 15 million games.
