Last night, Ubisoft held a Kinect-specific event in downtown San Francisco. There, president Laurent Detoc and senior VP of marketing and sales, Tony Key, talked about the company's strategy for Kinect and why it's investing so heavily to become the biggest third-party supporter of the device at launch.

"I think today is a pretty good testament that we think Kinect will do well because this is an event only about Kinect, so that's our statement on how well we think it's going to do," said Detoc in his opening presentation. It's a technology the company believes is the future of gaming and it's not afraid to say it -- Detoc's next few minutes addressing attendees proved that.

This week brings yet another update full of exclusive content, Home-grown community programs, and special events into the ever-evolving world of PlayStation Home. To start, we will be airing the Episode 3 of the PS Nation videocast in our mega-popular PlayStation Home Community Theater. Glenn Percival – PS Nation main man – sent along this teaser blurb to promote their newest episode, showing this Thursday only in PlayStation Home.

“In this episode we discuss some truly great PSN titles including ‘Tales from Space: About a Blob’ (which packs awesome cooperative action), ‘Kung-Fu Live’ (which puts you IN the game using the PlayStation Eye), and ‘Slam Bolt Scrappers’ (which offers equal parts insanity and hilarity). The feature segment focuses on ‘Joe Danger’ from Hello Games and, to top it all off, you’ll get to see just how ‘old school’ Jim Sterling from Destructoid really is! Word to the wise: you’ll want to watch all the way to the end ;).”

Also screening in the PlayStation Home Theater this week is Inuyasha episode 1: “The Girl Who Overcame Time…” In feudal Japan, the half demon Inuyasha was sealed away by the priestess Kikyo. “The Girl Who Overcame Time” picks up many years later, where Inuyasha is revived by Kagome, who has slipped through time from the present day. Watch this episode for free for one week only, starting Thursday, October 7th.

We are proud to announce that the second wave of the Home Community Volunteer program will launch this Thursday, October 7th. Let me pass the mic to my esteemed colleague GlassWalls so he can give you all the details as to what has changed since the first wave of HCVs (and what has not):

“First off, we want to thank all of you who have so graciously offered to take part in the Home Community Volunteer program. Even if you have yet to receive confirmation from PlayStation Home Community Management, we want to assure you that we will be continually (and constantly) reviewing applications and inducting new volunteers into the fold. In fact, you’ll notice in the coming weeks and months that many more community members will be involved in this program than before. Many thanks in advance for your patience.

For those of you who are not familiar with the program, we point you to this FAQ on the official PlayStation Home forums for an overview as to what the program entails (note: HCVs are gamers just like you – they are not employees of Sony Computer Entertainment, they are not moderators, etc). Home veterans will notice that volunteers will no longer be identifiable by the famous red and white “Guide” jerseys but, rather, by a “Guide” beacon that floats above their avatars.

Just as in the past, Home Community Volunteers will provide support to users both new and old as well as aid in the administration of events and other important community initiatives. Expect to see volunteers all throughout Home – some you will recognize as veterans from the first wave of HCVs but many, many more will be new to the program and eager to participate. So please, please feel free to use them as a resource while in-world.”

The Dead Rising 2 pre-order bonus DLC will be made available for purchase on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace over the coming weeks. Each pack will cost $1.99 (or 160 Microsoft Points). Bonuses in the packs can be combined to form the ultimate Chuck and include:
  • Psychopath Pack (Oct. 12) -- Bonus when using iconic horror movie weapons (chainsaws, cleavers, axes)
  • Soldier of Fortune Pack (Oct. 19) -- Doubles ammo, increases shooting and headshot accuracy; special bullet spray attack when using automatics
  • Sports Pack (Oct. 26) -- Golf balls, basketballs, etc. bounce more before stopping. Chuck will also "earn more from gambling, gain more health while eating and drinking and not get sick from drinking too much." So, essentially, he's your fun uncle.
  • Ninja Pack (Nov. 2) -- Stealth mode requires zombies be closer to detect presence. Throwing items do more damage and are tossed faster; bonuses with sword weapon
So, zombies better watch out when Chuck's camouflaged with a viking helmet and ninja slippers ... or they can just laugh. Wait -- do zombies laugh or just sorta joyfully gurgle?

You wouldn't blame Ken Levine for having a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Hollywood. After all, as Develop recounts, the respected game designer "failed spectacularly" in his first career as a scriptwriter. So, when Levine was offered an opportunity to make a game with, in his words, "a very talented film director," it's not much of a stretch to imagine he experienced more than a little satisfaction in turning down the offer.

"My feeling is why?" Lavine questioned. "Why would any game designer want to do that?"

Aside from any personal justice he might have enjoyed, Levine answers his own question with another: "Why would I want a film director to help me make a game, any more than they would want me to help out with their films?" And he takes it further: "I think there's a sense in the entertainment fields that video games are seen as the junior varsity," he said. "There's this feeling of 'oh one day you can come up to our league.'"

"In our industry there's too many people star-struck of the movie world, jumping into deals with some big movie director just because they're big film directors." No, Levine isn't taunting del Torro, he's just reflecting on the obvious clash between how great games have been made (hint: rather anonymously) and the looming cult of celebrity eager to pervade the game industry.

But hey, Ken, at least they asked you to work with a movie director -- just about anything passes as a star these days. Who would you rather (make your game with): Bristol Palin or The Situation?

Vijay Thakkar is the technical director at Newtoy, the company responsible for iPhone hit Words with Friends, as well as a former developer on Star Wars: Galaxies and at the late Ensemble Studios. He took the stage at GDC Online 2010 this morning to run a panel about how to embrace mobile gaming, and while extolling the virtues of Apple's mobile platform and its constant online connectivity, he took aim at the traditional game industry's long development times and buggy releases.

Thakkar railed for a bit on a bug found recently in the latest title of his "favorite gaming franchise ever," Metroid: Other M. When the save-breaking bug appeared in the game, Thakkar recounted, Nintendo couldn't use the Wii's internet connectivity to patch the game. Instead, Thakkar pointed out, the company had to "ask players to 'send us your memory card.'"

"That's awful," Thakkar added. It's 2010, he said, developers should have ongoing access to update and patch their games when necessary, and he pointed to the iPhone as a platform where games could be released and patched quickly. "At Newtoy, we've completed full games in less time than it took me to design systems for older triple-A titles."

This agility means that developers can not only fix bugs quickly after launch, but they can also prototype new ideas ridiculously fast (Thakkar said that Newtoy had created one internal test game in just two workdays). Plus, this business model lends itself to filling in and growing features according to player demand after release -- something that a lot of big, lumbering developers haven't figured out how to do yet.

What is a motion controller without nifty attachments that make it look like real life objects? Nothing, that's what -- a point driven home by CTA Digital's latest PlayStation Move accessories. The "Perfect Aim Pistol" gives your Move controller that firearm look and feel, while CTA claims it's also light enough to prevent dreaded light-gun fatigue. Meanwhile, the aptly named "Submachine Gun" offers a heftier military experience, housing both the Move and companion Navigation Controller; and it even features a removable stock and scope. The pistol and submachine gun can be pre-ordered on Amazon for $15 and $30, respectively.

Whether either of these trump the Sony's own, Earthworm Jim-style gun shell, well, that comes down to personal preference.
