We have to imagine that the amazing story of the Chilean miners being rescued after languishing underground for 69 days enraptured the Japanese console buying public's attention so much over this past week that, well, they plum stopped buying systems. Aside from a slight uptick in Nintendo DS Lite and PlayStation 2 sales -- outliers, to be clear -- hardware sales across the entire spectrum were down.

Unsurprisingly, the PSP remainded in the top position, riding high on the recently released Monster Hunter Portable 3rd demo. In the coming weeks, however, expect to see that little PSP's numbers triple or more -- perhaps you haven't heard, but Monster Hunter is serious business in Japan. Perhaps not as serious as being trapped underground for nearly three months, but, ya know, pretty serious.

If you've been keeping up on your World of Warcraft lore, you may know this infuriated beast as Neltharion The Earth-Warder. But once you've seen Blizzard's introductory cinematic to the WoW: Cataclysm expansion (just after the break), you'll see why his second name -- Deathwing the Destroyer -- is the only one on his business card.

The only slightly avid gamer Stallion83 (we can only assume Stallion1 through 82 died due to severe thumb inflammation) is half-way to his goal of achieving one million Gamerscore on Xbox 360, having hit the 500,000 mark in Achievement points on Friday. The (long) journey to the half-million milestone began in "early 2006," according to his blog, and ended by unlocking the "Tournament of Chumps" cheevo in Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures for XBLA. (In the fourth episode, "The Bogey Man," specifically.)

You can see a replay of the moment in the video we've popped in after the break. As for one million Gamerscore, Stallion83 writes that, "It's going to be a long process getting to 1,000,000, but hopefully I can make it there someday." Best of luck, and we'll be sure to post about your descendant, Stallion166, when he makes it!
Maiq the Liar

And then, when he finally reaches 999,990 gamerscore, the next Xbox is released and the old gamerscore system is shut down forever.

There is one more name in the obituaries the next day.

It’s been quite the week for fanatics of sewer levels and spelunkers, with 33 miners freed from a San Jose gold and copper mine in Chile’s northern Atacama desert, and the completion of the longest tunnel on the planet, spanning 35 miles and costing 10 billion dollars of Switzerland’s tax payers money. Also, 3,600 gamers banded together for charity and raised over $420,000 for Extra Life which is a 150% increase from last year’s efforts. Why all the random factoids you ask?

Age of Hammer Wars — Age of Hammer Wars unlike any other game features battles of flying machines equipped with various slashing, piercing and blunt weaponry. Previously known as Hammerfall on PC it achieved critically acclaimed status by becoming IGF finalist in 2008. The game is set in steam punk universe with rich storyline and breathtaking scenery. A unique combat system is based on realistic physics simulation, and it ties the movements of the rider to the movements of analog stick. As you wave it, your rider swings his sledgehammer, smashing the foe into the wall! This creates an unmatched feel of the real strike, a feel of the mass of the weapon in your hands. The aesthetic conjures stark imagery of an industrious, romanticised era, and there’s a variable and long campaign that will bring hours of entertainment.

Set to be announced in advance of the Hollywood Music In Media Conference running November 18-20, 2010 in -- where else -- Hollywood, CA, the 2010 Hollywood Music In Media Awards nominees include nine video game scores under the category of Visual Media. The bombastic orchestral sounds of God of War 3 and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood are joined by the more moody fare of Alan Wake and -- a bit out of left field -- the score to Disney Epic Mickey.

The winning score will be revealed on November 11, 2010, and you can find the complete list of nominees after the break. Cue dramatic end-of-post theme.
